Metal Gear Solid movie will star Solid Snake

Hideo Kojima confirms role as supervisor on film project from Spider-Man producer; Hugh Jackman considered for lead, then dropped.

by

Hideo Kojima has revealed new details for the upcoming untitled Metal Gear Solid film. Speaking at the Eurogamer Expo today (attended by VG247), Kojima revealed that Solid Snake will be the star of the project, which will be handled by Spider-Man producer Avi Arad through Sony Pictures.

Solid Snake won't be played by Hugh Jackman.

Kojima also nailed down his role on the project, confirming he will not direct the film or write the script. Rather, he is attached in a supervisory role. It is not clear what his exact responsibilities for the project entail.

As for who will play Solid Snake in the film, Kojima said Hugh Jackman (X-Men, The Fountain) was at one time in the running. However, it was later decided to cast a newcomer instead of an actor who is already famous, Kojima explained without revealing this person.

I am so glad to read that they are going with a new actor for Solid Snake. Whoever it is will probably do a really good job, and you will only be able to see him as Snake, and not think,"Durr hurr,it's Wolverine." or "It's batman!" Or something dumb like that.

Many people have said that Kojima seems to want to make a movie out of MGS, but something has stopped him from doing so and therefore he compensates that by having MGS games feel like movies with lots of cutscenes compared to actual gameplay. I'm glad that he finally gets to make a movie and one featuring Solid Snake would not only be quite interesting, but also give those aforementioned "many people" plenty of reasons to say "I told you so". Everybody wins :P.

Kinda funny that kojima isn't more directly involved with the film now that he's got a chance to do one, he's been trying to load them into his games for years.

There's only one true Snake.

His name is Kurt Russell.

I don't see how you can do MGS live action. It would have to be cgi, because, imo, David Hayter is Solid Snake. It would be like trying to do Transformers without Peter Cullen.

They should get Nicolas Cage LOL

I don't really understand the need for a MGS film. The MGS games are fantastic games/films as they are.  Can't Hollywood think of its own original ideas for films any more?

I've got one. Zombies! That hasn't been done....

I know people say videogame movies are always bad, but if they handle this like The Avengers, it will be good

And then it will eventually go in development limbo and get canned.

I hope they stay true to Metal Gear Solid in the movie.

At least with Hideo Kojima involved he can make it the way it should be, not the directors interpretation of it.

Well I would say that you need to see The Prestige.

I just hope that with Kojima supervising, the movie will NOT be a disappointment. 8-\

Just like ALL the games-to-movies out there, there's no high hope of this movie being any good either. Tekken was awful, Chun Li - abysmal, and the current train wreck that keeps chugging along - Resident Evil: Retribution. The problem with these movies is that they fail at trying to reinvent something original, and instead turn it into something awful. If it's not going to be just as good or better than the game, then just don't even try it.

@West123 Why the hell would a movie in a modern setting be mostly CGI? A CGI movie would be stupid. Look at Final Fantasy: Spirits Within. Oh, you don't remember that movie? Exactly.

wumpscutnut
wumpscutnut

@West123 For starters... how do you know most of the film will be CGI? That's rather stupid to say. MGS takes place in very believable locations and it's likely that only the more grand action scenes will be done in CGI. Locations, gear, acting, props will all be live action. If you want a CGI film then play MGS4 or wait for the next amazing installment of the game. I'm welcoming the change.

@GH05T-666 i dont think they should do that...look no matter what they do the fans of the game series are going to hate it...so keep it as far away from the games as possible...plus new moves budgets are always low so production values will be hit...

@N4o7A Hugh Jackman really? he already killed wolverine why should he have a chance to ruin solid snake? he sings show tunes how can he play a badass is beyond me

Nah, just leave MGS alone

@Tyaj  Man, I'm with you all the way.  My "only" hope is that Kojima is such a big fan of movies and such that I don't think he will just let this movie turn into a flop like all the other gaming movies (though I was a big fan of the silent hill movie).  We'll see in time though...

@Tyaj At the end of the day I'd say the purpose of making a movie adaptation of a game is to try and reach a wider audience, like those that may not enjoy or have the time to play games. And let's face it, MGS requires a lot of time. If that means they have to dumb it down in order to appeal to the masses then so be it. My love of MGS started with the games and it will be sustained by the games.

N4o7A
N4o7A

@MrKrupet Lol, I feel ya, it would be better not to make one but they seem adamant on making one so I'm trying to think of ways that would at least make enjoyable hahah

@West123 Really? How should wolverine have been portrayed then? Lol, also I didn't realize he does broadway as well hahah. But in terms of physicality, ignoring his acting n etc., wouldn't he make a good choice? He looks rugged and he stands at a lofty 6"2 (how tall is Snake anyways?)

The_Last_Paladi
The_Last_Paladi

@PlatinumPaladin  @Tyaj  I agree, but still most of the gaming movies even fail to appeal to the masses because they just weren't good movies.  I think you can make a movie that appeal to gamers and to movie goers. Heck, comic books have waaaay deeper background stories than videogames and yet Marvel and DC had done a fine job over the years appealing to both comic geeks like myself and movie goers, for the most part.
