Metal Gear Solid infiltrates PSN June 18

E3 2009: Konami and Kojima's original stealth actioner heads to Sony's online platform later this month for $10.

LOS ANGELES--Square Enix's Final Fantasy VII and EA's Medal of Honor aren't the only sought-after original PlayStation games to be announced for a rebirth on the PlayStation Network this week. Konami said today that it will be bringing Konami and Hideo Kojima's classic Metal Gear Solid to the PlayStation Network on June 18. The downloadable game will be available for $9.99.

Can I get an ooh-rah?

Billed as "the originator of the stealth-action genre" by Konami, Metal Gear Solid drops players into the light-stepping shoes of Solid Snake. As detailed in GameSpot's review of the original Metal Gear Solid from 1998, the retired soldier known as Solid Snake is tasked with bringing down Fox Hound, a genetically enhanced unit of supersoldiers who have acquired a nuclear weapon.

I just found it! For anyone who can't (and is using the pc store), do this: in the store menu, click the "Downloads" button, sign in, and then click "Continue Shopping". You should now be able to find it!

Yeah, I was trying to find it today, too, and it doesn't seem to be there. What gives?

Absolutely fantastic! This is the best game ever written. I hope the franchise never dies. Live on Hideo Kojima of Konami!

I'll probably buy it again digitally just to play it on my PSP.

Is this the reason the old "Metal Gear Solid screens" keep popping up under In The Mix on the homepage? I saw that and I was like, umm, that's a little dated to be "in the mix".

I remember the first time I played and finished the game in Japanese, I killed psycho mantis without changing controler, it was very hard but I found a pattern to do it :) avoid all the stuff and 1 bullet on him something like that, it was like awesome game back in 98. It still is one of the best games ever.

I think it's great Sony are releasing some genuine classics on the PSN. I bought FFVII the other day and I'm loving it. I never played it back in the day so I'm glad I can play it now. I still have the original 2 disc retail version of MGS so I won't be buying it from PSN but I think this is great for those who want to play it again.

Love the MGS series - played them all and will probably play again. It would be really cool though if they released the old school Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2

this game came out at the stage where i liked games, but crappy sega games. i watched my brother play it but it was too hard for me, i was only about 7 or something. but its a must for me because i always regret not picking it up a few years later!

@ Hanzoadam Yes you can use L2/R2 because on the Emulated games on the PSP you use the thumbstick for the buttons (flick left for L2, flick right for R2, and flick up for both @ StylezT220 actually the way they emulate the PSone games you can press (Home) and chose what controller port you operate on (maybe because they had this game in mind)

lamprey263
lamprey263

they should have had this game in the PSN store back when there was a PSN store started selling classic PS1 games anyhow, I was one of the lucky PS3 owners that actually has BC abilities, so I just picked up the $30 MGS1-3 box set that Konami put out before MGS4

Hanzoadam

You do realize it wont work on PSP it does'nt have L2 and R2 to change item and weapons

I wonder if gamespot ever regrets that they gave the original mgs an 8.5, considering what some other games have earned.

Yet Sony didnt mention this at its E3 conference and they through out FF7 download at the conference like they wanted to avoid talking about it. What was Sony thinking!!!

M2A people who want it on the PSP. It is going to be on the PSP cause I read an article on IGN were one of the employees played it on the PSPgo at E3. The only problem is it might take up a good amount of memory

irongobbo

@Kravyn81 : I would do that, but dang sony had to take out the backwards compatibility, so I cant do that without buying a PS2, and that is still quite expensive with ps2 games and systems still out on the mass market.

Petri87
Petri87

Im just wondering when they will start selling PS2 games on PSN. Just add the software backwards compatability that were in the EU launche systems to the consols that dont have it and there you go. Instant win. Even the 360 is selling last gen games on XBLA and soon will have GoD.

Beat this game so many times...but i will eventually buy it on the PSN. Though some games belong in your memory, like Medal of Honor, i remember how awesome that game was when i first got it...bought it on the PSN, definitley not nearly as fun, and the controls are horrid. Like the music still though, and the animations are quite good for a PS1 title.

Kravyn81

Or you can buy the MGS Essential Collection for $29.99 and get all three classic MGS games for $10 each and have the disc.
