Metal Gear Devs Discuss Customization and DLC at the Tokyo Game Show

Platinum Games' Atsushi Inaba and Kenji Saito join Yuji Korekado from Kojima Productions in a revealing interview session at the Tokyo Game Show.

Regarding the recently announced DLC, will it be free or paid, and is there a chance there will be extra characters available for download?

We are still in the process of planning it, so we can't say what form it will take, but we can say it will be fairly deep download content and will include a sub-story that we think users will enjoy. We hope you'll look forward to it, and we'll announce later on whether it will be free or paid DLC.

Is there any sort of multiplayer in Rising? There are numerous cyborgs in the game, and we are wondering if there's any way users can compete in head-to-head battles, either locally or online?

Currently, there are no plans.

Regarding Rising in Japan, it has been announced for the PlayStation 3 only, so are there plans to do anything with the PlayStation Vita and transfarring functionality?

Regarding whether or not it will be released on PlayStation Vita, there are two concerns. One is the major selling point of this game, the free-cutting mechanic, and there are some concerns of whether or not this could be accomplished on the Vita hardware. And the other is whether or not this game would actually sell on the Vita. We have those two concerns.

Will Raiden be able to augment parts from other cyborgs as he progresses through the game to enhance his abilities?

First of all, there will be customization in the game, where you'll be able to customize your character, but it won't necessarily be with parts from other cyborgs.

Will customization also be a part of the DLC?

That's a very good idea. The DLC is still in production, so we haven't decided yet, but we will take these ideas into consideration.

Historically, Metal Gear has always had a lot of collaborations and partnerships with famous people or products. Now that Platinum Games is collaborating on Rising, will we see crossover characters or other collaborations within the game?

That hasn't been decided yet. There may or may not be. In the past, we've done collaborations with UNIQLO and Metal Gear Solid. Metal Gear Rising also has a line of shirts from UNIQLO, but we also collaborated with Seiko for a Rising watch. That watch will actually appear in the game.

Is it fair to say that there is a definitive good or evil side within Rising, or is that affinity tied to Raiden's work with the PMC?

From the player's perspective, it will be fairly clear who's good and who's evil, but each person has their own motivation for what they're doing. So even if someone is "evil," they'll have their own things they are trying to accomplish. So there's not a simple distinction. For example, some of the characters' motivations might lead them to accomplish something different from other people, so when people look at it from the outside, it may look evil, but they have their own motivations, which will be explained in the story.

Will we get to use the Zandatsu (free-cutting system) on larger opponents, such as Metal Gear Ray?

No, we don't have that system in place right now for that particular enemy, but other enemies like the gecko and those of a similar size, we do have the Zandatsu system in place for them.

Aside from Metal Gear, there are a lot of huge mechanized weapons in Metal Gear, traditionally. Will we be able to freely cut all those weapons?

Yes. In the E3 demo, there was a helicopter, and you were able to freely cut that up into small, tiny little pieces.

Will you be able to control the dog-shaped robot?

First of all, the name of that dog-shaped robot is "Wolf." You'll see in the demo that we have here in TGS that you start off fighting Wolf as an enemy. Later on in the story he becomes an ally and will assist you on your mission. However, you won't be controlling him directly; he'll support you as a support character.

In a previous interview, it was mentioned that Wolf has a relationship with another cyborg, and he (Wolf) ties Raiden and the other cyborg together. Once Wolf becomes an ally to Raiden, does that create a conflict between Wolf and his original master?

Basically, the other character is Sam. Sam's position in the story is that he's a rival to Raiden and his ideals. We also want to make the distinction that Wolf is AI, and he operates very logically. As an AI character, he has a lot of questions. He doesn't understand human behavior, such as freedom and free will. Through Raiden and Sam, he's trying to get those answers, so the relationship between those three will be very important to the story.

It was previously announced that Rising would be an extension of the story of Metal Gear Solid 4, and you know the SOP system was a big part of that, and there were a lot of major characters who were a big part of that. Will any other characters from Metal Gear Solid 4, other than Sunny, appear in Rising?

First of all, we want to clarify exactly what happens in the story of Rising, what the setting is like. So the SOP system is not being carried over into Rising. Basically, Rising is a story about what happens after SOP is eliminated. In Metal Gear Solid 4, Snake and Raiden destroy SOP, so what happens to the world once SOP is gone, once the control system is gone, and that's what the story of Rising is about.

Whether or not other characters from Metal Gear Solid 4 appear in Rising, that's a question that we can't answer at this time. But this isn't a parallel world. It's directly connected to the story; it continues the story.

First of all i feel to bad that they made this Rising look like vanquish, every game is designed by Platinum Games look like that more fantasy It is not like MGS we know They Just messed up the game to bad, No matter What they Do No matter What they Develop No matter what idea they will put in the Game It won't Be like '' Metal Gear Solid Rising 2010 E3 '' That was designed by HIDEO KOJIMA with FOX ENGINE, But its to shame they handed to Platinum Games, but Metal Gear solid Ground Zero will be better than this trust me its the MGS that every one knows.

That is my opinion and All Real MGS player that want Same MGS story and same game play will agree with me. Snake Will be Back on Ground Zero so i am happy for that, and It will be Designed by HIDEO KOJIMA and his Group it will be Amazing and it will OWN rising By Platinum Games.

FIRST OF ALL...the free cutting system sounds like something that will be fun for the first few minutes but will get old quick. They are spending so much time pushing this cutting system.  Alright already with the freaking cutting system, what else is there?  Just another button masher (JABM)?

FIRST OF ALL! I think this game wont be as good as the other games.

What I still think is not so real about the game is the fact that ONLY in Free Cut mode you can actually cut the enemy. I mean, in normal combat, Raiden Slashes them, (with that powerful sword) and they just bleed but don't get cut at all. I mean, the normal soldiers at least shoulb be killed with one hit.

Of course that would make the game boring, but well, it doesn't make that much sense.

"it continues the story." The words i was hoping for not to exist, now i have bad thoughts about this game, i hope platinum prove me wrong though.

You should have asked if you can choose a stealth style route? I mean come on he is a ninja cyborg! So he should be able to go stealthy! XD

@Printul_Noptii  I hear you. MGR isn't even out yet and they've started talking about the development of DLC.

Very good. Can't wait for this game... About the DLC, I believe that it will be focused either in Sam or Gray Fox. Sam because he have a very ambiguous nature, and is well developed inside the game. And Gray Fox, because of this statement, that the "users will like a lot". Both allows good side stories...

And, canon game, no less. End of the discussion.

Interesting tidbits. Well, it's common for hack & slash games to allow some form of character progression, so the part about customisation doesn't come as a surprise.

I am surprised to know about any DLC content. Since this a single player game, still my favorite type, I'll look foward to this and follow this game. It does look great.

I was quite surprised to find a, seemingly, nearly identical mechanic in an independant game, and it wasn't that much fun after 10 minutes.

The game with the cutting mechanic is "Tiny & Big: Grandpas Leftovers", and while I haven't played MGS: Rising, the mechanic looked/felt identical to what was shown in the Rising videos, and I doubt a freeform cutting mechanic in 3D space is considerably different from game to game. Might feel different, but it does the same stuff.

Printul_Noptii

God, I hate DLC sooo much >:[ its just a way to split up game content so the companies can cash extra money on us, how greedy is that and the worst part is that developers nowadays aren't even so original with their DLCs and get lazy and just slap the 13 Euro price on meager content **cough** CoD **cough** its really sad.

If they start releasing every game on the Vita as well then I'm about to be broke all the time.

Guys, come on. You seriously thought they were gonna do this without letting us be Gray Fox? I just hope it's free.

I like the potential for DLC, but so few devs get it right.  In my opinion, Rockstar has been the only company to do DLC's right.  The "episodes" for GTA4, and Undead Nightmare for RDR have been the only "great" DLC's.

Metal Gear series has always been pretty solid, no pun intended. The feel of the games, the depth, and the systems in place within the games have always felt pretty good and fined-tuned. I have pretty high hopes for this Japanese dev team considering Japan has been on a downward spiral when it comes to games that attract western customers. Hopefully they nail this, maybe that's why it is taking some real time to finish and polish the game.

May be it's just me... but I just feel gutted when developers talk about DLC before the game is even released...

Good thing there is no multi-player though.

I'm very excited to see the game in action as it progresses, but I'm still on the fence. Platinum can work some serious magic though, so I hope it does well both critically and commercially, and the MG fans won't freak too much over the story.

@Jac_solar While the general concept may be similar, I imagine that the two mechanics would feel decisively different & that the difference is very important. The Tiny & Big mechanic seems to be limited by being a slow movement that's disconnected from the player, while MGR's is extremely fast & has a lot of impact, making it far more satisfying for the player (it doesn't feel like it's the player's weapon doing the cutting; it's the player). More satisfaction from the action means the player's less likely to get bored of it.

Haven't played either game so I may be talking out of my ass (again) but that's how it seems to me.

@TheChump1989 Let's take it by the name. Metal Gear itself contains all the saga, the whole plot. Wether this is a "spin off" it is still part of the Metal Gear plot. "Solid" is meant to be about the Snakes' saga, since te beginning with Big Boss. And "Rising" is about Raiden's story.

Outer_Raven
Outer_Raven

@TheChump1989 Yes it is. It says right there, "Metal Gear Rising". When will you people understand that you don't get to decide what is or isn't Metal Gear, Kojima does.

@vincent_tai Would you prefer they announce DLC after you've traded your game in?

ssj2los
ssj2los

@vincent_tai Hardly anything good comes from DLC....... I hate them too. There's a better chance that the game will feel short or unfinished rather than the DLC being actually enjoyable or grant the feeling of "worth it".

Jac_solar
Jac_solar

@Hairygrim I do hope you are right, but based on how it looked from the videos of Rising, and how it "felt" in Tiny & Big, I'm not sure that it'll be that different.

Of course, that doesn't mean that there won't be other gameplay mechanics built FOR the cutting mechanic in Rising that makes it far more meaningful and fun.

Since it's built (mostly) for melee combat in Rising, it seems like it'll be different -- in Tiny & Big, you used it mostly for the enviroment, which quickly became a chore.

@Outer_Raven @TheChump1989 It may not be what we are used to be served as food, but this game looks friggin interesting! I welcome this new arrival.

@Black_Jedi  @Dawg9000 For the DLC to be about Gray Fox in any way, he has to appear in the main game or in some way affect the story. Otherwise it's illogical since in the interview the guy from Platinum Games said that the DLC tells a sub-story.

JJB03

@uvanguliashki  @Black_Jedi  @Dawg9000 I'd like to see grey fox but he's been dead since the shadow mosses incident. Unless they make a DLC prequel which would be weird but cool.

@MONEYMUFFINS No, silly rabbit, you're a plantain. Bananas are sweet. You're not sweet. You're starchy, low in sugar and are usually cooked before served.
