Mega Man powers up Euro VC

Two 1989 classics hit up Wii Virtual Console this week, with Mega Man and China Warrior available for download.

If the release of The Sims 2: Pets and Shrek the Third isn't enough to make you rush home to play on your Wii this weekend, then you might want to check out the latest set of releases for the Virtual Console. Two 1989 classics will make their debut on Nintendo's download service today, in the form of Mega Man from the Nintendo Entertainment System and China Warrior from the TurboGrafx.

Anyone who missed out on the seminal '80s classic that is Mega Man, might want to spend the 500 Wii Points (£2.80) needed to download the game for the Wii. The game, which made an icon out of its blue-suited star, has been converted with all six stages intact--all we need now is a conversion of the Mega Drive follow-up, Mega Man: The Wily Wars.

European gamers could be forgiven for missing out on China Warrior, given that the TurboGrafx was only given a limited release in the region. The side-scrolling beat-'em-up featured groundbreaking graphics when it was released in 1989, with a Bruce Lee-like character battling across China to defeat an endless onslaught of enemies. The game features four stages, each composed of three different areas, and it goes on sale for 600 Wii Points this week (£4.20).

These two new titles bring the total number of Virtual Console titles to 103 in Europe.

Mega Man definitely has one of the greatest-worst pieces of box art in history.

Actually, Mega Man for the NES was released in 1987, not 1989. This could have been a typo. Anyways, MM1 is a great title, but obviously, MM2 is better.

"NathanHawkins: All well and good I suppose. Anyway, as some have mentioned, Mega Man 2 is better. Some have also mentioned wanting Crystalis, Mario RPG, etc. My pick for a future release at this point is The Battle of Olympus" I couldn't agree more, I want Crystalis, Battle of Olympus and Mario RPG very, very badly... I was stupid enough to sell my original copies of Crystalis and Battle of Olympus back in the 90's and I've only ever tried Mario RPG through a rom :/ I hope to play the full thing soon, but all they seem to release are sidescrolling shooters and beat 'em ups (not that those weren't good in their own respective places) they need to release some more of those "cult classics" soon.

Poor Europe... It's been nearly 14 years and Mega Man 6 has STILL never been released there in any form, for any platform.

All well and good I suppose. Anyway, as some have mentioned, Mega Man 2 is better. Some have also mentioned wanting Crystalis, Mario RPG, etc. My pick for a future release at this point is The Battle of Olympus, primarily because not many got to experience this great game. One of the greatest aspects of the VC is that the potential for newer gamers or those that missed out on the more obscure games from several years ago will get to understand why some of those not-so-well-known games were worth substantial regard. Nowadays with sites like GameSpot and such, gamers get the news on less known games; whereas, in the past some of these games fell under the radar considering information wasn't so widely available to the masses as it is today with G4 or the internet. Without this media would Katamari even be a drop in the bucket of game sales? Probably not. The VC is just another iteration of how the media can introduce the obscure to the masses...often to our benefit.

I'm just waiting for the Earthbound VC download. That'll be the best $8 I've ever spent.

Two great games. Mega Man is a must, it is the second best of the entire series after Mega Man 2. I hope the pause cheat still works. China Warrior was one of the big hits on the Turbo, it's worth checking out if you like cheesy beat-em-ups.

Can't believe they didn't put out Megaman until now. Watch now as a string of Megaman games flow out.

Mega Man's a great game... however horrible the box art may be. Nonetheless, you can get Mega Man Anniversary Collection for like $15 (USD) at Circuit City these days. I do have it for GC, though I'll likely pick it up for Xbox so I can play it with my wireless 360 controller. I'll still pay less for Mega Man 1-6 this way, after all. Virtual Console prices are outrageous.

Lol. Well I guess thats something. I don't really understand what you Wii-owners play? Mario party 9999 and Wii sports^^ No offence though. Hope you're happy with the console of choice.

I'd get Mega Man when it comes to the VC, but I'd rather pick up the Mega Man Anniversary Collection for Gamecube.

103 titles for Europe? Is that more than anywhere else? I had no idea the Wii's VC has gotten that big already, that's great.

Megaman was good, and I don't mean to be needy, but Megaman 2 was the best. Hands down. We need that on someone's download service.

MegaMan is the coolest game ever. I have it on NES but it'll probably work better on WII, so I'll probably get it.

I wish I had a Wii so I could get Megaman. I do have one question about this article. Why to 600 points cost half again as much as 500 points? Do they mean £3.50 or 400 Wii points?

Sweet! Now release Mega Man 2-6, Crystalis, and Startropics and I'll buy a Wii. I'm sure they are listening,

Megaman 2 would be nice. I loved the music on in that game. I'll only agree with the people asking for SMRPG, only because Nintendo Power said it was supposed to be released. If you want a gam released on the VC, find your own way of telling them you want to play it, instead of whining here.

I never played Mega Man (or any other Mega Man game, for that matter), so I am really looking forward to it coming to the US.

I've already got megaman for the PSP and NES. And then I've got Megaman X for the SNES. And then I pretty much just downloaded the rest for free. Why doesn't nintendo do something like XBL arcade does and make the games worth buying?

I have the Megaman & Megaman X collection for Gamecube, but the button feel of the GC controller is too stiff for Megaman. It'd be so much easier w/ the classic controller.

I have the Mega Man Anniversary collection for Gamecube, also Mega Man X collection, and Zelda: Anniversary collection. So I dont need this....WHERE IS SUPER MARIO RPG: LEGEND OF THE SEVEN STARS??????

Whoopee ****ing-doo. Any Mega Man fan already owns one of the compilation discs that has them all on it. And yet another obscure TG16 game no one cares about.

Let me re-phrase, it's surprising they haven't released any Squaresoft originals(now SquareEnix) ie. Secret of Mana, FF1-6, Rad Racer, and so many other games the were never released outside of japan. I'd pay a few extra bucks to have them translated.

SQUARE ENIX WONT RELEASE ON THE VC !!!! they make much more money by making GBA/DS/PSP remakes of very old games than selling them for just a few bucks on the VC

Oh well. I guess that's good for Europe. I bought Megaman Anniversary Collection for $8. If you add the price of getting all the Megaman games released on Nintendo consoles, you are probably better off just getting the collection. I mean it has 1-8 and Power Battles 1 & 2. It's just a better deal.
