Mega Man 9 advances on Wii, PSN, XBL

Publisher's all-new 8-bit adventure for iconic blue war machine lands on Nintendo's and Sony's platforms next week, Microsoft's console October 1.

by

Capcom has been reveling in its back catalog in recent years, breathing new life into classic franchises by taking the tried-and-true gameplay and polishing the graphics with a fresh, high-definition luster. The publisher is taking the opposite tack with Mega Man 9, however, making an all-new game and giving it the nostalgia-inducing veneer of the 8-bit era.

Today, Capcom gave gamers a date for when they can expect to experience the 8-bit Mega Man revival. Mega Man 9 will lead on Nintendo's WiiWare on September 22, with the PlayStation Network edition following September 25. The game will arrive on Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade on October 1. The game will be available for $10 in each platform's respective currency.

As detailed in GameSpot's hands-on with the game from this year's E3 Media & Business Summit, Mega Man 9 promises a fresh bout of the series' signature punishing platforming gameplay. This time out, the titular mechanical hero battles his way through eight stages that are each capped by a unique robot boss.

For a look at Mega Man 9 in motion, check out GameSpot's live stage demo from this year's E3.

Getting this one for sure, MM games have always rocked even that one on I think it was N64 was pretty cool even though I cant remember the name of it.

Not if they made it a Gametap exclusive title... Gametap games aren't possible to pirate.

@xkojimax, you do realize MM9 is a new game, inspired by MM2. @goochtoe, MM9 looks exactly like MM2 ...

I might just get this game, shut the music off and listen to the Minibosses cover of Megaman 2 tracks. Ah... sonic bliss.

xNinjaKingx > You serious? Legends was pretty sweet, outside of the kiddy story. It was a lot of fun to play, and using the wide variety of side weapons, along with customizing made me play a lot longer. kljohns2 > Could have sworn it was 50 back then but...well it has been 20 years and I wasn't exactly apparent to currency at the time...just wanted to play more games. Looking forward to this. I kinda hoped for a 16 bit game but 8 bit is just as good, since its an actual sequel to a series that hasn't been dusted in ages.

Great Capcom dev interview for Megaman 9 in Sept. play magazine. Its biggest inspiration is Megaman 2. That's awesome.

I like how they made boxart for a downloadable game.

If they made it like Megaman 8 then I would be happy. If this game isn't as good as Megaman 2 then I'll be disappointed. Megaman 2 was the ****

LOL @ some people thinking graphics mattered in the NES / SNES days. The graphics back then were sooo basic that no one cared about how a game looked. I'm sorry, but anyone that argues that is probably in their late teens or early 20's and got into gaming with the PS1. Graphics didn't matter until the N64 / PS1 era. The saturn gave people a taste of what is possible and the PS1 blew open the doors for it. Mario and Mega Man and Zelda and Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest didn't sell their copies because of graphics. They ALL sold large quantities because of their gameplay and entertainment values.

@somberfox: Yeah no pc, probably because of the possibility of rom ripping. This one we have to actually purchase if we want it. On another note, back in the day if this game were to be released then it would have cost about 60$. 10$ is a damn good deal now.

lol, First off, fallenAngel, "Back in the day", graphics DID matter. Graphics have always mattered. Mega Man's graphics are far from bad. Mega Man 9's graphics would easily be the best in the entire NES series. Mega Man was never about having good graphics though. If you're not buying it because the graphics are "old school" then you're obviously missing the point. They aren't ugly in anyway, In fact it would be a GREAT looking NES game. Obviously you're just not much of a mega man fan to begin with if you're really going to skip mega man 9.

Also isnt it amazing how Megaman has managed to come back a few times, and stay up to date whilst sonic has been left behind...again :P Capcom have the idea, RETRO GAMES SHOULD STAY THAT WAY...Sega just cant grasp the simple concept...ok maybe nintendo have a knack for making great retro games into great modern games, but there strange like that.

FallenAngelXBL
FallenAngelXBL

Oh no, the graphics suck...im not buying this...people are so single minded at times, oh i wont buy a game with retro graphics cos its guaranteed to suck, well back in the day(here comes a old n' days talk) graphics meant nothing, gameplay was the in thing, and in megaman, gameplay is STILL the main thing. I personally think going back in time graphically has improved the series, all NEW megaman games to this point have sucked MMX7-8 in fact a lot of MMX games weren't that good, id say MMX6-8 in all honesty. If you are a TRUE megaman fan you would buy this without a second thought...if you dont then you dont know what your missing out on.

@ Typhoonexhale You would play it for the story? I hope you realize the only story is probably ggoing to be an opening cinematic about how Wily is destroying everything again. Then again, if you're playing a Megaman game for it's story, you're missing the point. Anytime a Megaman game tries to shove story down my throat I get bored as hell. Just give me 8 stages I can choose and jump through! Did ANY of you people grow up playing the NES games? If you don't think the art style is a good idea, you obviously didn't, as most any game (other than X) in the series that had better graphics sucked a big nut.

@Belgium 1830: Isnt that ironic that you have to buy a next gen system in order to play a game that looks 20+ years old. LOL!!

Really? An 8-bit look. Not buying it, even at $10.

does anyone know when the VC updates? Here it is the 22nd and I don't see MM9 up for download.

Graphics don't mean that much to me, but with MM7 appearing on SNES in 16-bit and MM8 on PS1/Saturn (32-bit?), why would they go all the way back to 8-bit for a new release? I don't know, seems they're trying way too hard to bank on nostalgia. And frankly, my favorite MM games were the X series, from MMX-MMX5, which started on SNES. I'd get it for $5, but $10 seems a little pricey for this.

mrkame16

not interested..i thought they were going to step up the graphics.

i would by this! ... if i had a next gen console :(

Wow I thought Megaman 8 was the end... I can't believe they decided to make a Megaman 9. Although the Megaman 8 had better graphics.

i like the 8 bit, its kick-ass, but i am gonna have to wait another damn week. come on. i was hoping it would be sept 24, not oct 1 .....why? why? oh well ive only waited 10 years, whats another 2 weeks.

Typhoonexhale
Typhoonexhale

@thewilyranger I do agree with you it might be worth checking out if the storyline (if there is one) does manage to bridge the megaman & megaman X series together then yeah i would play through this just for the story but i hate 8 bit graphics god

thewilyranger
thewilyranger

@Mewt2021 I agree except for X8 it was definitely better than X7 which in my opinion is the worst in the Megman X series, I cannot wait for Megaman 9 I hope it fills all the plot holes that Megaman & Bass did not fill.

Typhoonexhale
Typhoonexhale

Making an 8-bit Game in this day and age is just retarded. Capcom really are slipping aren't they? with over 30 megaman games out they would go and do it NES style on the freaking next gen consoles that is LAME!

To xNinjaKingx: Did you seriously just dis Megaman Legends? :( That's one of the greatest Megaman games of all time!!! Amazing story and great gameplay. They need to make a 3rd one for the PS3. But yeah I'm stoked to get this :D It seems like its gunna be amazing but idk 10 bucks seems a bit steep to me but I'll get it for sure :D

I'm so glad that this is a more original type Megaman game, because the franchise died a long time ago for me. Anything past Megaman X6 really just sucked long and hard

If this was the other way around...Xbots would be saying that PS3 is waiting for MegaMan9 and would make a big deal out of it. Well PS3 gets it first this time...but I won't say anything. PS3 FTW!
