Medal of Honor Vanguard Q&A

We talk with EALA senior producer Matt Sentell about the recently announced Medal of Honor game.

Medal of Honor Vanguard is the newest entry in EA's Medal of Honor series. The recently announced game is in development for the PlayStation 2 and Wii platforms at EA's Los Angeles studios. We checked in with senior producer Matt Sentell on the upcoming game to get a sense of what to expect from the new first-person shooter.

GameSpot: Give us the basic premise for the game. Who are you and what are you doing?

Matt Sentell: You play as Frank Keegan, Corporal of the 82nd Airborne Division, who drops behind enemy lines in some of the biggest battles of WWII. Keegan begins the game as a corporal, but rises in rank as he distinguishes himself in the field and gains new responsibilities.

Oh, sniper rifles, how we love thee.

GS: There are an awful lot of World War II games out there. How will Vanguard distinguish itself from the pack?

MS: Some of the new features we're bringing to Medal of Honor Vanguard include upgradeable weapons and extensive combat dialogue that dynamically responds to what's happening on the battlefield. And in addition to the big, cinematic moments that the series is known for, we've made improvements to our artificial intelligence and graphics systems that allow us to deliver the most believable WWII experience yet in the series.

GS: How are you taking advantage of the Wii controls? How will you balance out the PS2 version with that design in mind?

MS: The Wii Remote's pointer control gives the player an unprecedented amount of control over aiming and firing, while the Nunchuk's analog stick and two buttons make it ideal for controlling player movement. Most game controls have a gesture associated with them, and we have worked very hard to make sure the gestures are intuitive, easy to learn, and most of all, fun to do. Jumping, crouching, aiming, reloading, and even turning around 180 degrees are all things you can do with the simplest of gestures. These functions are also bound to buttons, so players can choose between gestures and button presses in exploring their own play style.

Wii owners will have the opportunity to bust some cool moves with their Wii Remotes.

GS: Will there be any technical differences between the two versions? Different graphical effects or anything?

MS: Outside of the controls, the two versions follow the same storyline and are mostly identical, but since they are available on different systems you can expect to see some distinction in resolution.

GS: What kinds of online features will be included on either platform?

MS: Medal of Honor Vanguard will feature split-screen multiplayer for both platforms, for two to four players in games of deathmatch, capture the flag, and king of the hill, as well as a new multiplayer mode called scavenger hunt, where opponents race to capture supply drops that land throughout the battlefield. We will be revealing more details about the multiplayer component to this game as we get closer to the March 2007 ship date.

GS: Can we expect to see our Mii running around in the Wii version? Seriously, though, will you be doing anything with the Wii's unique features aside from the controls?

MS: There will be no Miis running around WWII Europe this time. We've focused all of our efforts on maximizing the impact of the Wii's greatest innovation, which is its unique controllers, and giving Medal of Honor fans a truly new way to interact with the game.

GS: Thanks for your time.

davelk i disagree , xbox actually was holding on barely , if it werent for halo xbox would have failed as youve seen it wasnt until 2005 when xbox went past gc in sales lol . even then gc was close behind xbox , ps2 was ahead cause it came out ahead of the others and how many ps2s break down? there is many who had to replace ps2 what does that do that makes more sales if ps2 was great hardware wise it would be a hell of alot lower in sales

Yet another company too lazy to improve the Wii's graphics, which it could so easily do. Xbox didn't have PS2 ports, why should the (even stronger) Wii?

This dose in fact look like a great game. Even the editors watch what they said about which will have better looking grahpic's. The controls are going to be great based on the reviews of the game. Yes the Wii is stronger than the PS2 and will have the better graphic's, but I look for the game play and how much more better at a game you got to be on the Wii cuz you feel as if your holdig the gun. Same as of CoD 3. Ninja18.. just cuz you think you actually know what your talking about. Dosen't mean you open your month on reviews or comments. Did you ever try a Compontant Video Cable on the Wii on a HDTV? Maybe not. Or have you ever try replacing your TV? Graphic's on the Wii are pretty close to those of PS3 and Xbox 360, but both PS3 and Xbox 360 have 720p and 1080i. (Even 1080p) This dose make them a little ahead of the HD market. The Wiimote is what makes the system. Even reading how much fun Editers (People who make the games) have making games for the Wii is cool enough for me. Try playing a game on the Wii before running the month again. Than maybe.. just maybe.. people will actually think your review or comment was worth reading.

The thing about the Wii that i've noticed is that the controller is so fun to use that I don't even think about the graphics. Maybe some of you should actually spend some time with a Wii before making stupid comments.

I dont see how this game looks gay? They also said that one version will have largher reso's that means better graphics whihc version the Wii's version of course since its 3x stronger then the Ps2 and the game on the images looks pretty smooth and I like the lighting effects. Ninja18;No one is going to listen to your comments 10+ years I mean how can you say that about nintendo 10 years ago the N64 came out with the First fully 3D renederd games no 2D and also introduced thhe joy stick so ouch to you you dont know about games

Raiko101

The attitude and oppinion of Ninja18 suggests that they are a "casual non-gamer" i.e. very ignorant. I can only assume such an opinion is expressed either to persuede others not to buy a Wii or simply trying to justify their own reasons for avoid purchasing the console themselves.

"Why can't they do say..WWI.." Lol, i think the main reason for that is that it would involve climbing out of a trench and getting gunned down in the first ten seconds, not very fun tbh (unless you like that sort of thing). Your other suggestions I totally agree with, though. And all of you ranting about graphics and online play: 1. Graphics aren't absolutely the most vital thing (although they are important) as long as gameplay is solid. 2. This is still in development. Give them a chance to improve it before release. 3. "We will be revealing more details about the multiplayer component to this game as we get closer to the March 2007 ship date." They may well include online MP but just haven't got it finished yet and don't want to leak the news until it is ready.

"Wow, I used to be excited about the Wii, but this looks like garbage. Yet another crappy looking port with aweful graphics, surprise surprise. Looks like I won't be getting a Wii at all. I LOVED the Gamecube because the games actually looked really good and you didn't have to swing your arms around while playing. Imho the Xbox and Playstation are far FAR superior to anything Nintendo has come out with for the past 10+ years. Such a shame, Nintendo had such potential, and now they're catering to the casual non gamers. Ouch." Yet another dope who will run out and buy a ps3 because they look good

Wow Silent Riku, youve got to be the most mature person I've ever seen on gamespot. Seriously, are you still randomly calling people "f@gs" and "puss!es" because they dont like the same video games as you? For one, youre clealy a fanboy, but the bigger problem, youre unbelievably immature, childish, and just plan dumb. How bout you go play ps2, then come back and talk to us once you turn 14.

I'd like to point out that most of the people on here are a fanboy of some sort, just buy all the systems and only the games that you want. Leave everyone else in peace, its Xmas after all. Personally I think that the PS2 sucks and 99% of its games are complete crap. But its just my opinion and over 100M were sold, we know Sony wont win this generation until the PS3 comes down to around £150, For all of the hardcore gamers out there, its the 7 - 12 year old kids parents you have to get to spend the money. At its present cost not many parents will, But how do I know ? well I'm a gamer and a parent, I have a large disposable income and I still can't justify buying a PS3, Not until the price tumbles, In the UK the PS3 has a preorder price of between $1k- $1.3K, I cant see many parents spending that on Timmy's birthday. Everyone I know is going to wait for the PS3 to get really cheap and then buy it, most of us have 360's and Wii's already. This does not mean any of the systems is better than the others, they all have merits, just the PS3 is over priced, (Yes it has Blu-ray), but why the hell do I need blu-ray? I never listen to the documentories on DVD. I have a HD DVD player that upscales to 1080i, good enough for me and it only cost £60.

I wouldn't mind them using some better graphics, but I'm willing to wait it out in the graphics department if they are able to keep the gameplay solid. I think the biggest problem that the third party companies are having is that they aren't able to put in all the Wii control functions without trying to sacrifice something else, which would mean that they aren't using the machine to more potential than, say, the PS2 or the Xbox. If you look at Far Cry Vengeance, the game is pretty much junk, but it's because Ubisoft was looking for a quick buck with a known name, and in turn, they really f'ed up the franchise a bit. I think that EA is going in the right direction with this game, at least let's hope. I really did enjoy European Assault, as the AI was better than some of their previous entries, the use of sandboxed levels was really well implemented, and the storyline was actually compelling...and the multiplayer was pretty good too. Graphics aren't the most important thing, although I will say that they do mean something to me. But I would rather have a game that looks like 10 years ago with fun gameplay (see Elebits) than something that looks fully realisitic but doesn't deliver in the gameplay department for more than 10 minutes (see Dead Rising or Gears of War...yeah, I said it, what?!).

What in the hell??!!!?! Yet another game available on wii and ps2 with no graphical difference? Should i feel offended? Hell yes! Jeese, up the graphics, i know graphics arent everything, but seriously, the power is there, and this is the type of game that benefits from extra graphical power, so bloody well use it you laze devs!
