Medal of Honor redeploys in fall 2010

EALA and DICE collaborating on long-rumored reboot of classic series, which will follow modern-day special ops commandos in Afghanistan.

The past week has seen several major news stories centered on Afghanistan, culminating in last night's announcement by President Obama that is he is dispatching 30,000 more troops to the war-torn nation. Today, Afghanistan figured prominently in the game world, when Electronic Arts announced it would be the setting for the long-rumored reboot of its Medal of Honor franchise, titled simply "Medal of Honor."

The new face of Medal of Honor.

Due out in fall 2010 for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, Medal of Honor will be the first installment in the once-top-selling series to not be set during World War II. The first-person shooter will instead focus on a member of the most elite group inside the modern-day US Special Operations Command, the shadowy Tier 1 Operators.

EA says its Los Angeles studio has been working closely with actual Tier 1 Operators, whose real-life experiences will provide the basis for Medal of Honor's story. Presumably one such solider is the inspiration for the game's cover soldier, who sports a distinctly non-military backwards baseball cap and bushy beard in addition to his assault rifle. However, such outfits were indeed sported by US Special Forces in Afghanistan, as shown in a 2002 Life magazine photo feature, to better blend in with the heavily bearded local population. Later that year, soldiers were ordered to shave, according to CNN.

Until 2002, US Special Forces sported beards to blend in with the local population.

In a statement, executive producer Greg Goodrich said EALA is emphasizing realism in the game. "When we first set out to reinvent Medal of Honor, we wanted to stay true to its roots of authenticity and respect for the soldier but bring it into today's war," he said. The most popular military shooter to date, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, took some criticism from reviewers for having a highly implausible storyline. Its developer, Infinity Ward, was created by former Medal of Honor developers who left EA in 2002.

While EALA will focus on Medal of Honor's single-player campaign, another internal studio, EA DICE, will be handling the multiplayer mode. The Swedish studio, formerly known as Digital Illusions CE, is renowned for the multiplayer modes of its Battlefield series, which will continue next March with Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

EA did not announce any further details on the game other than its cover art. However, the game's official Web site shows its setting will be in eastern Afghanistan, just southwest of the mountain stronghold of Tora Bora where Tier 1 Special Forces almost captured Osama Bin Laden in 2001. Last fall, that battle was recounted by a member of the unit involved on 60 Minutes on CBS, GameSpot's parent company. The video is viewable below:

it'll be great seeing moh come back and give cod a run for its money. i just hope that it's multiplayer mode doesn't use the crappy matchmaking service that both cod & halo 3 use (lots of lag in that).

i hope EA will make the game a top ten video game and not make like a copy-cat game from another game. i hope Medal of Honor will be rated a 9.0, 9.5 or a 10 for the best game. i hope!!

@ sleepychicken. its not really direct competition because DICE will get paid either way. it is a WIN WIN situation for both UA and DICE

sleepychicken

Weird that DICE would work on a game coming out a few months after their own, that looks to be in direct competition to them. Unless they're doing something vastly different in this games MP than the Battlefield series.

Why no Arab-Israeli Wars? It would be cool if they did the 1982 Lebanon War is very Vietnam in it's nature.

I have a feeling theres not gonna be much variety in this game. Mostly cave hunting.

@ 100starz Completely agree, as long as they don't feck up the narrative and place it with cliched Military movie motives. I mean seriously MW's narrative was completely lifted off from a James Bond movie or some crap, totally unbeliveable. As for the music goes, please, PLEASE bring back Michael Giacchino. I know you're a big shot Hollywood composer now but remember your roots! YOUR ROOTS!!! lol :)

Nice to see something based on real events. I saw the trailer: http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/61598 It looks like it'll be pretty good. People saying it's modern warfare ripoff can certainly quiet themselves, as modern warfare was all about stolen nukes and some guy without any defined motivation trying to nuke the US because SAS guys failed at capturing his son who commited suicide. Meh. It was a great game anyway. What's awesome about this new MOH game is that DICE IS DESIGNING THE MULTIPLAYER! HALLELUJAH! And the single player has traces of potential awesomeness. Which might be good. Seeing as awesomeness=good. So long as they don't portray the opposing faction's country as being evil like Airborne did, this could turn out to be good.

lindseyiluvyou

At least its based on true events. Not like MW2 where Americans were the bad guys.

BIN LADEN! in moh this is interesting

doktron
doktron

So, Bush & Co. essentially allowed bin laden to escape so that he could take a left turn into iraq (a country that had nothing to do with 9\11 attack),which is why we have the Afghanistan mess of today.(bin laden owes his life to mr. bush) Thank U, George,Dick,&Donald P.S.- my thoughts are with those who bravely fought and died in this stupid mismanaged war.they should all be proud for fighting for what they believed was the right thing to do!GET BIN LADEN!

if they are getting stories from guys who were on a top secret mission like that the story must be good for a new Medal of Honor game. So far this sounds great....

@Cillerboy yeah, but not the same as the real BF's. I'll still get it though ;)

looks good few problems not with the game but with people and information a) people who whine saying this is a rip off of MW2, get over it COD spawned from MOH (if you cant understand the acronyms your in the wrong place) b) gamespot (incorrectly) state "until 2002" SF's would grow beards, in actual fact its not uncommon to still see bearded wonders (SF's) serving (yes with a beard) anything else I missed i'll add later

lordreaven
lordreaven

I'd prefer WW1 but hey. This ought to be intersting. I want all my enemies to speak native tounge for some authenticity. But i'll get it for sure if its based on actual events.

to anyone saying that this is copying MW, just so you know EA released Battlefield 2 much earlier than MW, and that was in modern times. back on topic i really don't understand why they have a bikie with a gun on the cover.

aaronfhff123

I hope it features blood and gore. Bullets should put holes in people*cough*MW2*cough*. Modern weapons should make bodies look ugly.

Seems like EA trying to get in on making some more bucks. Although I do admit, I am truly impressed with how authentic EA is making Medal of Honor. And well... most of their games really.

codybiroth

For all you morons saying MoH is copying COD, they aren't, plus the owner of Infinity Ward was in the cast who made the first Medal of Honors and left to make his own.

Ferrettron
Ferrettron

"When we first set out to reinvent Medal of Honor, we wanted to stay true to its roots of authenticity and respect for the soldier but bring it into today's war" It seems to me that making a video game based on an ongoing war is more disrespectful to me. It's like saying to soldiers who served in Afghanistan "Hey, remember all of that horrible suffering you went through when you had to kill people and watch your friends die around you? We made a game out of that!"

Well, let's be fair, Call of Cuty would not have come out at all if Medal of Honor hadn't started the "era-based" FPS. I can remember playing the first Medal of Honor on the PS1 back in '97 or '98, and Call of Duty didn't come out until 2002, or maybe even 2003, so we can't knock MOH for wanting to try something similar, and see how they can do.
