Medal of Honor presales hit franchise high

EA's Afghanistan-set reboot attains highest preorder numbers ever for decade-old shooter series with more than a week left before Oct. 12 launch.

As they are wont to do, Electronic Arts and Activision will be going head-to-head during the holiday season, with this year's contenders being new installments in their respective Medal of Honor and Call of Duty franchises. Today, EA engaged in a bit of prelaunch saber-rattling, announcing that Medal of Honor has set a new presales record for the franchise since it began on the original PlayStation in 1999.

The bodies are already piling up for Medal of Honor.

EA offered no indication of Medal of Honor's presale numbers, but the publisher did say that the figure puts the DICE-developed shooter in the same neighborhood as its other top action games. Further, EA still has a week and a half to bolster those numbers, as Medal of Honor is due for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on October 12.

Medal of Honor will initially be offered only in a Limited Edition format, one that carries a standard-edition price tag of $60 across all three platforms. Belying its price tag, the Medal of Honor Limited Edition includes many of the customary premium perks, including early access to DICE's Battlefield 3 multiplayer beta, early access to two in-game shotguns, and an exclusive weapon. PS3 gamers will also find a free copy of Medal of Honor Frontline packed into the Limited Edition.

The first installment in the series not to be set during World War II, Medal of Honor will follow a group of elite commandos called Tier 1 Operators during operations behind enemy lines in Afghanistan. It will be set during the early stages of the still-ongoing war, when the US-backed Northern Alliance was pushing toward victory over the now-resurgent Taliban and their Al-Qaeda allies.

Though the Xbox 360 and PS3 multiplayer betas have come and gone, PC gamers still have a chance to participate in an open testing period beginning October 4. The online multiplayer beta download client will be available through Medal of Honor's official Web site beginning October 1, and the testing phase will close on October 7 at 11:59 p.m. PST.

cant wait for MOH, call of duty is just a camp fest these days with noob tubes, no-scoping and unrealistic perks. plus the levels are way too small. im dont want 4million different customisations i just want a good even and fair multiplayer.

@funnysplay I hope its MoH but i would have to say CoD. The reason i would choose CoD is simpliy because it has the same cinematics that MoH will have. Yet CoD will posses top notch multiplayer that MoH wont have. CoD will have so much customization in there multiplayer that MoH sadly wont have a chance. Thats just me stating the facts.

I wonder which will sell the most this year. COD Black Ops, Halo or Medal of Honor.

It certainly has a lot of hype. But can the game live up too it? It was a dying series before this, and it has a lot of established FPS's to compete with.

I'm glad that EA has finally realised that World War 2 games went out of fashion about 5 years ago.

@ TheGreyArea This is just another modern military shooter, not sayin it wont be good cause it might be, but its not going to provide a "refreshing new angle" for the FPS genre. Brink will be the game to do that.

@ElusiveOne Right you are... images of the original PS1 covers started to flicker in my memory after I clicked "Submit" But since this is a game site I have to try and prove I was still right... right? :-P

@eriktkire You are possibly mistaking Allied Assault for the original Medal of Honor, which although was great wasn't the first. There was indeed a PS1 game before that beloved PC title released in 1999. I think you may follow your own advice and do your research properly ;)

This will be a good game, it'll sell millions, won't beat halo or cod in sales or popularity, more on the scale of battlefield bad company, but medal of honor will be a big player on the FPS scene again.

"...since it began on the original PlayStation in 1999" Really? You're defining this as originally having been designed for the PS1? Is this more idiotic Gamespot news from someone that doesn't know about anything in the world of games before MW2? MoH was a PC game that was ported out, just like CoD was a PC game that was then ported to the consoles with greater success with each sequel... not the other way around. What's in the next update on MoH, how they chose to do something REVOLUTIONARY like add dedicated servers for the PC version? WOW Someone needs to learn how to do their research properly.

@ sgthombre unfortunately moh rising sun sucked a** and with call of duty coming out with their ww2 games moh was struggling to compete why do you think it took them so long for this game? Activision and Treyarch can can rotate years and come out with excellent games I havent found a cod that I didnt like unless you count the scum sucking campers who can just rot in hell

im sold on medal of honor but not black ops i say theres nothing different bout black ops except new weapons and storyline, characters, flying helicopter but it just looks like mw2 thats all . In my opinion they shuld jus skip black ops and go straight to mw3 so i can see wat happens next in the storyline so ya black ops is garbage!

Medal of honor, Call of Duty, Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Killzone, Resistance, Halo, Wolfenstein, Bioshock, Half-life, Duke Nuken, Doom, Deux Ex, etc etc etc... They all copied a game before them. So who care? They're all Fps, and all pretty fun. As for the originality, they are certainly not. Only System Shock 2 and Time Splitters can claim that.

man i cant wait for this game. i know for sure EA will beat Activision for sure. when i see the videos of the single player game play and when i played the BETA i felt a cold chill going down my spine because it looks and feels real. and gives the real feeling of a life or death situation in the battle field.

FabledVeteran

I think this game has great potential... its great that they that two different teams from EA to make one game, as they use DICE for what their good at (Multiplayer) and let another team (Danger Close or EA Los Angeles) focus on making a gripping singleplayer, while using a mix of engines too so it doesn't feel too similar and from what i've seen graphically it looks a stunner in places... Im also glad about the brilliantly placed release... couldn't be better, a month before the rival comes out... To be honest i really don't think i could guess the outcome but it will hopefully be a close battle, as this will push developement forward for both EA and Activision

Love the comment about who COD copied. It is so true. IW came from the people who developed MOH:AA. I personally love both series and can't wait until this one comes out. MOH has taken some flack over their last games, but MOH Airborne had the upgrade features for weapons before COD did as well. The problem is each series keeps doing stupid things that make no sense like not being able to lean anymore and not supporting more players (at least on PC) for multi-play. And while I love these games, I find myself now not being able to wait for SC2 (which just came out) and Diablo 3. Seems like more of the same each year and they release them so quick anymore seems like cant play one game for long before they have another come out. $$$$ I guess. And now you pay for map packs?? WTF. Thats why I loved Counter Strike Source and Team Fortress 2 so much. they always updated it and gave you more gameplay modes and maps for free. starting to leave a bad taste in my mouth. Anyways, I hope for the best for both, but if they don't start thinking about those who play, it will catch up with them soon. Or at least I can hope.

And to King Gamer: Medal of Honor owes nothing to Call of Duty. She was there in the begining before Call of Duty was a twinkle in into creators stealing eyes. MoH was the original, and in my opinion will always be the best.
