MechWarrior Online dev raises $100,000 for cancer research

Sales of special mech in memory of 5-year-old fan who died from brain cancer reaches new milestone.

MechWarrior Online developer Piranha Games has now raised over $100,000 for cancer research from sales of a special mech released in memory of a five-year-old fan who died from inoperable brain cancer in May.

The "Sarah's Jenner" mech is based on the model enjoyed by 5-year-old Sarah Marie Alida Parries. One hundred percent of proceeds from sales of the $10 mech will go to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Those interested in purchasing the mech can do so at a special landing page for the offer. The promotion ends on August 20. Due to the special nature of the mech, it cannot be sold for C-Bills and can be purchased only once. In terms of gameplay, the mech will be treated as a regular JR7-D, but also includes a 10 percent XP boost per match played.

Good brings good and the great spirit of the universe is always watching. So in that goodness brightens up even the darkest of spaces, humanity may persevere.

Hey, good job on raising money for a worthy cause. Now, raise some money to get that game out of beta. Some of us built gaming PC's around the idea of playing MWO.

I love that a 5 year old girl was a fan of a game like this. Goes to show how varied gamers are these days and how they no longer fit some narrow stereotype. This is a great thing the company did in her honour.

Always great to hear to stories with companies giving people money instead of plotting how they can steal everyone elses

So EA does a fundraiser and only gets $18k. These guys do one and get $100k

Karma is a wicked thing.

As someone who has cancer, and a gamer, I love a story like this. I can't help but smile too wide. Best story on GameSpot in a while.

this is great, but we already know how to cure cancer, program nanobots to eradicate cancer cells

..and to think that EA could only raise 18k for AIDS research.

Good news, I always knew the MWO community had their hearts in the right place.

Now the entire battlefield will be filled with Jenners tearing down my Atlas's back armor.

Cudos gamespot for deleting that idiots post, but I think SoulReaver1337 was well within his right to be very very upset at that freaking worthless fool.

Not sure if this is the right place for such comments, but this news should be mentioned anytime someone says gamers are deviants, psychopaths and basically worthless scums...

Some people should not be allowed to speak.  Im talking about the pair of people who left idiotic messages; who gives a damn about animals or your political bs.  A kid died the developer did a good thing so say great job and pretend to grow up since you guys will never actually do it.

@zintarr its not down to EA how much money they make. Its down to the community.

@Super_Tramp EA didn't raise anything. It was EA`s employees private money if I recall correctly.  You know its much more important to pay millions for golden parachutes of terrible CEOs than help fight cancer

@Super_Tramp That was precisely my first thought as well, although we're talking about entirely different things. EA employees participated in an AIDS walk. These guys sold an XP boosting in-game item. One's certainly gonna drive more donations than the other.

@MAD_AI

you know it - 12v12 seems to be the Age of the Lights.

@CallMeDuraSouka It was removed because of the thread collapse, not because it was wrong, and that user was not modded. ;)

@SoulReaper1337 Golen rule of GameSpot when a mod is looking, keep it classy. And they're -always- looking. Least they should be ;)

@MAD_AI @gawthy Actually I believe MS only owns the "MechAssault" name, but that's it. Anything else BattleTech related is owned by Topps, who seems willing to play ball with whomever.

SoulReaver1337 may have gone overboard, but he had every right to be pissed.

@DarkkTerr0r @parrot_of_adun @MAD_AI @gawthy Oh wow... I was curious so I did some digging, and apparently MC is licensed from MS to Smith & Tinker, and then in turn to Piranha. And then the encompassing universe is owned by the completely unrelated Topps.

Now *that* is a silly web IP rights...
