Maximum Impact 2 becomes King of Fighters 2006

SNK Playmore's 3D spin-off of long-running 2D fighting series adopts main series' nomenclature.

by

It's likely a bittersweet day for fans of SNK Playmore's long-running King of Fighters series. After a two-year hiatus on the primary line of King of Fighters games, King of Fighters 2003 now has a successor in King of Fighters 2006 for the PlayStation 2. However, the 2006 installment isn't a sequel to the 2D, three-on-three fighting series--it's a sequel to the spin-off 3D game King of Fighters: Maximum Impact, which focused primarily on one-on-one bouts.

Like Maximum Impact, King of Fighters 2006 will bring together a cast of familiar faces under the production of artist and designer Falcoon. The entire Maximum Impact roster will be returning, joined by a number of hidden characters.

This development doesn't necessarily mean the series' 2D fate is sealed. SNK Playmore has King of Fighters NeoWave scheduled to hit American Xboxes next month, and NeoWave already has a sequel in Japan, King of Fighters XI.

I guess that they need to make more games like SVC or the last 2D KoF, those are way more interesting than the 3D version, I Dun really liked the 3D version I just bought that cuz of the franchise don't worth to play in the 1 player version. I really hope they include a better gameplay with this new version otherwise KoF will die in America =(.

hey gamespot newsflash for you , kof XI is the sequel to kof2003 , and as far as i know kof MI 2 has a lot to do with kofXI plot , anyways i don't agree with the kof2006 name , it's just not right . this is the official website http://game.snkplaymore.co.jp/official/kof-mi2/

My guess is this is just a trick to try to make it sell more in the US. While I don't agree with it, I don't care as long as they keep making 2D games. Speaking of which, does XI have a console release date? It's not at any of the arcades here, but we do have NGBC, which is cool in its own right. I don't know why they're releasing this and KOF Neowave instead of those two.

maximum impact is the worst thing that could have ever happened to kof. i'm sure this one is gonna suck too. ahhhhh i remember those wonderful times when kof still rocked. i think the series reached it's peak with kof '98. up to 2002 it was still good... but 2003 is where everything started to crumble.

Yeah, and it's a MUCH better series than that FF crap.

Please note: It will only go by the name "KoF 2006" in AMERICA. So No, the Maximum Impact series has not replaced the real KoF No, this is not the successor to KoFXI (there is no succesor yet since koFXI is still quite new) Yes, KoF will remain 2D

Well one thing I can say is that it looks better than the Street Fighter EX series, even though i liked it. Hopefully this game will do better than the first that way Capcom and SNK could start their rivalry again. I would love to see another Rival Schools made to go up against this, but Capcom seems to forget some of their franchises unlike SNK. If only Capcom Fighting All Stars(the 3-D fighter, not the crappy cut and paste job 2-D game they made) came out then we could compare.

Now this is something I can't wait to play. King of Fighters was and is a great series of fighting games. Nice to see them still going.

Couldn't they at least make it cel-shaded?

In either case, I'm glad they're keeping the series alive. BUT REALLY NOW -- The 2D series is what KoF means to all KoF fans. Nobody thinks of Maximum Impact, because frankily, it sucked. ....lets just pray they redo the entire engine and try to make their own legitimate one, instead of just blinding making one (which is what it felt like).

It's simple, XI is the new 2D series, and will probably continue with the roman numerals. Years will now be 3D... You know why? SCEA. Sony Corporate Entertainment of America will not allow any 2D fighters onto the PS2 anymore. They've regected quite a few, including SvC Chaos and Neo Geo Battle Colleseum. The only way SNKP can print these titles is at budget prices, which will rapidly turn all SNKP games into budget-quality games. 3D on the PS2, 2D on the Xbox. That is the only gameplan that SNKP has left in America.

Well, hoping the 3D series will never take over the 2D ones...

SNK dissapoint me, recalling MI to KOF 2006 is a great mistake, I think that the best presentation of KOF is 2D.

snk makes bad decision constantly. with their budget theyll crank out maybe one game a year with this 3d nonsense.

wha, wha, wha???? Wait a minute, so you mean to tell me, the successor to KoF 2003 is XI, while Maximum Impact becomes 2006. That's how this article should read since there is an upcoming KoFXI running of the Sammy engin

It's great and all but it feels odd that 2006 is 3D. I think 3D titles should use name s instead of years.

KOF XI is the true successor to KOF 2003. This wack Maximum Impact series has nothing on the 2D series. If they are labelling this as the true continuation of the series then I'm truely sad that SNK would sell out their premier 2D fighting series like that. SMH.... I doubt it though. I'll say Gamespot got their facts wrong. As long as SNK keeps churning out great 2D fighters though it's all good...

Thanks Playmore. Just keep right on slaming that SNK name into the ground with sub-par folow ups to legendary series like KOF. The bias against the 2d gaming artform continues.

They better improve on the first one because that was bad. I did like it because of its King Of Fighterness and extra costumes, but that's about it.

What saddens me about this is that SNK is acting like the 3D KOF's are a legitimate attempt at a fighting game. I love KOF, but the series needs to stay 2D just like Street Fighter needed to stay 2D. Then again, as long as SNK's giving us a Metal Slug Collection, I suppose there's absolutely nothing worth complaining about.

I think I've played this game....don't recall how great it was though.
