Mass Effect PC locked down

BioWare's epic sci-fi role-playing game has been confirmed for May 6 in US.

by

It's time to stop Saren once again, and this time on the PC. Mass Effect has been officially dated for May 6 in North America on the PC.

A number of modifications have been made for the PC version, including a new squad-control interface that lets players issue separate commands to each squad member. There will also be hotkey functionality for psionic powers and abilities, and redesigned Mako vehicle controls for exploring planets.

Other additions include more save slots and a new inventory-screen interface to address criticisms levied against the Xbox 360 edition of the game. The PC version will also get a new decryption minigame.

This game will probably run pretty well on an 8600gt or equivalent. That and basically any P4 3.0ghz or better and 1GB of RAM will probably do you good for this. Look at it, its beautiful and will take a little hardware, but for medium quality you could probably pump it out with what I said. I have a E6750 Duo 2GB DDR2 800 RAM 7900GT and I'll probably run it just fine. Hoping 9800gt's come out soon though so i can enjoy the beauty of this and Crysis :D. Can't wait for this game, played it all weekend on Xbox 360 and it is amazing. Should be even better on PC!

this gives me a time frame to beat the Witcher, completely random but I can't wait for this to hit the PC.

@mago_hitokage and BlueBirdTS I'm feeling both of you. I've got a 360 and Mass Effect and Oblivion are the ONLY games I'm not trading back in. I also own Oblivion for PC. My rig specs are 3.33GHz CPU, 2GB RAM and GeForce 8500(512MB) GPU. Even with my sh***y 8500 Oblivion looks almost as good as its 360 counterpart. So an upgrade to 8600 should put me on par with the 360 without living on oatmeal for a month. It really doesn't cost much to get 360 quality graphics on your rig.

I certainly hope some of these tweaks and changes are going to make their way into a patch for the 360 version, or at least be implemented into the sequel. I feel kind of cheated about this.

PC Gamers, you do realize that the OS the game will be running on is in fact Windows. It won't be coming on Apple or Lynx. Microsoft hasn't lost a thing. I swear people have no actual clue these days about OS and they think Microsoft doesn't own Windows... Get a life.

well waiting for almost 1 year to play it on the pc is worth it, since some of the bugs in the console have already been worked out, and it looks nicer too in the pc...

Any chance you guys can bug BioWare for the minimum specs? I really want this, but I'm somewhat doubtful if I can run it with my current hardware... =\

I kind of regret buying my 360 now that I built my own PC. Most of its best games seem to be available for the PC and are often better.

Lancer VI, I totally agree, I became a PC gamer 4 years ago and will never look back. games that go to PC always seem to get added content also, plus they are cheaper. win-win-win :)

*at below* Yeah like a year later. Who can wait that long for great games like Halo 3, Gears, and Mass Effect besides elitist PC users!

@MadDog I have a great computer and I shall wait all eternity to play games on the PC!

MadDog550493

It's always usually better to play games on the pc then it is the console, but that's only if you've got a great computer to play the game and if you're willing to wait a a year more for the game to come out.

Sounds like they're fixing the problems that the console version had. Bravo... I thought the game was fabulous but the small problems that they have listed here definitely damaged the experience for me.

Also to the whole PC versus Console debate, I have a really great PC, but the reason to have a console over the PC isn't for title or performance really, so much as, you will be guaranteed to have a fully supported machine that will run all of the current big-blockbuster games for at least 6-7 years without having to upgrade a single thing. You can get the same effect with a PC for around $3,500, but really, it isn't worth it to do so.

This right here is why I am not buying a 360. I have a beast of a gaming computer and I have yet to see one "exclusive" title released on the 360 that hasn't been improved and released on the PC in a short while. I got my PS3 and my gaming rig, all is right with my gaming wants.

i saw the pc vs console argument down there, your pc only has to cost more than a console if you want better than console resolutions, 720p may be a high res for a console but it's still below average res for a pc game, i could build a good gaming pc right now for 600 dollars and cod 4 would look way better. probably wouldn't be able to play crysis high but who cares, i'll play it on medium setttings any ways.

ha ha ha. just kidding, but seriously this game wasn't quite finished when they pushed it out for holiday season on 360

squarejp, you don't have to constantly upgrade your PC to play the latest next-gen games, and overall it's not that much of a price difference between consoles as long as you manage your components right. An Xbox 360 costs $400, a PS3 $600. Not to mention each game costs $60 on the consoles, compared to $50 for the PC. The only thing you really have to upgrade that often on the PC is the video card. Yeah, video cards are expensive, but a 3-year old video card is enough to run almost all games, as is 1 gig of ram. If you want a game on consoles, sometimes you have to buy more than 1 console, and remember that new consoles come out about every 4-5 years. Just like you don't need the latest and greatest consoles right when they come out, you don't need the latest and greatest hardware either. Yeah, having a gaming PC is probably more expensive than a console if you want to keep up, but as long as you manage your hardware right and don't make dumb decisions it's not that much more expensive.

if they dont fix the bugs this release is pointless...

For all the next gen games, it's not about console vs PC. It's all about what you paid for. For PC, you can go for a very expensive setup to get the best quality from games, or you can go cheap and can't even play any. As for console the main purpose now is clearly defined, to generalize the population for gaming. Do you expect everyone in the world to spend hundreds to thousands of bucks just to play next gen games? No, instead, people rather want to spend the least amount of time to get the best gaming experience. XBOX 360 and PS3 have both provided superior game experience with a reasonable amount of price. The gaming world has already in the culture of you get what you paid for. Exclusive or not is back in the old days. No matter what, Mass Effect PC version sounds interesting even I have the xbox 360 version. It is a more complete version for the rushed release for xbox 360. However, most of the time i'll stick with my XBOX 360 because I don't want to keep upgrading and tweaking my PC, just too expensive and time consuming. I'm done for that era. Besides, I use keyboard and mouse for the whole damn day, when i get home i want something different. Holding the controller and lying on the sofa are more relax than siting on the desk to use the mouse and keyboard.

With a PC you won't have to suffer with frame-rate problems, ultimately, because you can just go get better components. Viola! No more sweating whether or not your game console can somehow manage to provide 30-60 FPS. ;)

Kenaue

As long as they fix the framerate problems I had when I playe the 360 version, I'll get it, since the framerate made it unplayable for me.

"A number of modifications have been made for the PC version, including a new squad-control interface that lets players issue separate commands to each squad member." That's actually a considerable downgrade. I'll stick with the superior 360 version.

Why can't we get those modifications hotpatched to our 360 versions of the game? Our in game "Dowloadable Content" section is as empty as the day the game relased... it makes me wonder why it's even there.

ah... +1 reason to upgrade my PC, -1 reason to get a 360, can't wait to have halo 3 on PC too
