Mass Effect: Paragon Lost teaser released

Animated prequel to Mass Effect 3 gets nine-minute sneak peek; due on DVD and Blu-ray December 28.

Though the Mass Effect full-length movie may been headed back to the drawing board with a new writer, upcoming prequel Mass Effect: Paragon Lost is due out in just two months. A new trailer (below) for the animated movie has been released, giving fans a nine-minute look into the new fiction.

Paragon Lost is a prequel to Mass Effect 3. It focuses on the pursuits of alliance marine James Vega, who is voiced by Freddie Prinze Jr. (Scooby Doo, She's All That). Vega is in charge of a Special Forces squad tasked with battling an alien threat known as The Collectors.

Paragon Lost is due on DVD and Blu-ray on December 28. It was developed from a collaboration between series creator BioWare, production company Funimation, and Japanese anime studio Production I.G.

If this means that Mass Effect is getting a cell shade makeover this might actually be the redemption of the franchise, since it is a bit more reprehensible to make anything inappropriate in the way of content in what ends up being a cartoon...not even talking about anime, for just all those reasons...

Why does everything have to anime? I'm honestly pretty tired of it.

I liked it no complaints... I've seen things like Animatrix and it's right up there. who cares about frigging 1 frame per sec ppl yeesh

Animation quality is very poor, lacks fluidity and art style is rubbish, which shows a generally poor budget for this movie. Hope the storyline makes up for it.

Speaking as someone who actually does invest a lot of time in anime, the art style (as well as dialogue) here is a fairly poor representation of it. Don't judge anime based on a shallow nonsensical adaptation from BioWare. That's like judging all American movies as bad because you saw the Dragonball Evolution live action film.

I really don't like the look of this. I like anime as much as the next guy, but if ever a game series didn't need an anime remake, it was Mass Effect. The least they could have done was go the route of DA: Dawn of the Seeker. That has a much better look than this.

Mixed feelings. Anime really isnt my thing but I can still appreciate the subject matter. I really cant help but cringe at all the back flips and dual wielding though. I know there is a certain level of over the top action that inherently comes with an anime production, but this is an established universe. Over the past 5 years we've become familiar with how the characters in the universe move and behave. To see the alliance military suddenly populated by Olympic gymnasts is a rough transition and cant help but break the immersion for me.

It's good to choose Vega for this anime.  He's one of the only characters that can die at the end and no one will feel the need to complain.  See ya, buttface!

Hope it's good. As long as it has Quarians I'll be happy with it.

Okay, I had no expectations for this one before this sneak peek.

Now I'm definitely interested.

a movie with a completely unfitting artstyle about a completely unfitting character. yup, sounds like biowares new style. whats with them making anime movies of very western style games? because halo did it? because you continually fail to understand how to appeal to the hardcore fanbase? because the anime style is generally used specifically because it is cheap and quick? what world is this where the last option is the most dignified?

but why Vega? sorry, harbor a slight dislike for the character so forgive the contempt. I'll still watch...but why vega...

What can I say? Not bad, but it's hard to judge the whole movie by nine-minute fragment.

And I would like to hear the soundtracks from the games. Anime's music is tasteless.

Wow at all this hate and prejudice because it uses an anime style. That's pretty shallow, guys. Closed-minded Americans strike again.

LOOKS LIKE TOTAL CRAP! They could have made a better movie if they used the in game engine. The style just looks god awful.

Sweet. An animated movie about my least favorite character in the series. Can't wait.

It doesn't look too bad actually. I like the animation style. There's not much about Vega that makes me think it is Vega apart from his name but I'll try to overlook that. Not sure what's with the tiny headed Krogan mind you. I'll pick this up if I find it cheap.

The animations should have been like Final fantasy or atleast like naruto.

They are fighting Krogans in this video. So must be based on the Krogan rebellions, atleast one part of the movie.

its actually not bad -i saw the movie already at anime weekend atlanta.  It actually develops vega a bit makes him less of a meat head.  Overall i think the movie was ok.  Plus even though you know whats going to happen it exciting to watch.

As picky as I am about anime (I only have two I find watchable) I do wish they went for more of a Dead Space.... whatever it was called approach. It was still anime but at least they moved and acted like real humans would in the situation, non of this spinning, jump kick, nonsense.

@Lazy_Marine first... when I saw the animation i thought it was fanmade. I cant even expres how dissapointed I am. There isn't even 1 frame per second. They should not have made this an Anime

@GreySeven Someone didn't read the article... "Paragon Lost is a prequel to Mass Effect 3."

naw the prolem is not the "anime" its the flash animation.  ive seen some pretty high quality anime (from back in the day) hell back then anime was known for being higher quality then western animation. dont get me wrong i love all the western animated classics but gi joe didnt look half as sharp as ninja scroll.

@onewithtoenail7 Please do not dismiss something simply because it does not suit your taste. Anime is not "cheap and quick". Most anime today have very high production values. This is also being produced by Production IG, they are a very good production company. People like you are why the world views Americans as ignorant.

@FreakshowGamer Wow! Just coz someone hates anime makes him a close-minded American? Ignorant xenophobic *insert your nationality* strikes again.

Finalninja447

@FreakshowGamer Because no one likes Anime. I watched the video and appreciated the small story given, but absolutely hate the visual art. Does that mean I hate Japanese? Not at all. It just really doesn't appeal to the majority.

@SolanOcardUnless you can do better you shouldn't insult other peoples work. Sure its by the numbers manga, but a team of really talented artests spent a really long time drawing those characters.

the_requiem

@NaturalDisplay  @onewithtoenail7 I believe his comment was that it is a "cheap and quick" alternative to live action films. Yep, most animes have high production values but even an anime with high production values will have its budget trumped by a live action movie with high production values. So, his comment is not THAT ignorant.

super_voltron

@Finalninja447  @FreakshowGamerpeople keep saying anime but this does not look like "anime". i gotta say for mass effect this style doesnt look good. i would rather some anime styles instead of what they are using.  I like some anime (not all) but this (is a cheap as in low cost style of animation) doesnt fit the style of mass effect. it works with tron though

@Gazz64  @SolanOcard Gazz64: That is the laziest counter-argument to a critic ever. I don't need to know how to make a pizza to know when one tastes like shit. A regular consumer of anything knows as much about that thing as a regular creator. By your logic, everything is criticism immune coz every little thing in this world requires efforts and hard work from someone. Think about that before you insult someone coz their parents spent a REALLLLLY long time bringing them up.

@shooters125 yeah.Remember the conversation you had with James, the one when you were sparring and talking to him at the the same time,he said something about an assault on a collector base where he had to make a decision :whether to abandon his squad and retrieve the intel or to ditch the intel and rescue his squad and he chose the intel over and it turned out to be a total waste as shepard destroys their base.this movie might be based on those events.
