Mass Effect 2 investing in Shadow Broker DLC

Latest downloadable content teams Commander Shepard with Liara in a fight against elusive foe; pricing, release date not announced.

Fans clamoring for the latest adventure in the galaxy-trotting Mass Effect saga are going to get it via Mass Effect 2's latest content update, Lair of the Shadow Broker. The critically adored role-playing game is set to expand sometime in the future with a new mission pack that brings an old friend back into the mix.

Why so blue? There's work to do.

Following Commander Shepard's apparent death at the beginning of the sequel, his blue-skinned comrade Liara T'Soni clashed with the mysterious shadow broker over the remains of the commander's body. Mass Effect 2's latest expansion catapults Liara back to Shepard's crew and brings the fight to the lair of the mysterious broker of shadows.

BioWare today announced the new content via a brief update on Mass Effect 2's official Web site. The statement was light on details and confirmed only that the content will become available "soon." A price point for the pack was not provided.

Additionally, fans looking to get a glimpse at the content are in luck, as BioWare has uploaded three screenshots of the content to its site.

Lair of the Shadow Broker will follow June's Overlord downloadable content, which added five planets to the galaxy, each of which is explorable using the Hammerhead tank, a vehicle first introduced in the game's Firewalker pack.

Has anyone heard about a full expansion to this game yet. I love the dlc but this game could really use a nice expansion pack similar to the Oblivion or Fallout 3 ones before ME3.

*Liara and Tali glare angrily at Shepard* Shepard: Umm...well you see...Mordin! Diversion! NOW! *Jumps in and starts to sing.* Mordin: I am the very model of a scientist salarian I've studied species, turian, asari and batarian I'm quite good at genetics (as a subject of biology) because I am an expert (which I know is a tautology) My xenoscience studies range from urban to agrarian, I am the very model of a scientist salar-Graaaahhhhhh!!! *Is cut down by a hail of gunfire.* Shepard: .......... O_o!

no in theory you can just carry on playing with your completed character, I started a new play through with mine this time on the hardest setting and I'm going to go the renegade route this time but I'm sure I can still access the completed play through and carry on with that if I wanted

So, if I have already beaten the game, when I get this DLC do I have to complete the DLC and then beat the game again in order to have the records of those missions added to my upload for ME3? Not that Im complaining, God knows that I dont need an excuse to play ME2, hell Id play a DLC chapter revolving around aquiring Ramen for the cook on the Citadel if it meant I was getting new content.

Once a game comes out all the DLC should always be free??? The developers should keep working on the game creating more and more content and just give it out? Spending time, resources and tons of cash making content, but just hand it out because we as gamers who are loyal to their brand are entitled to keep playing a game we purchased for the initial $60 forever? And have fresh new content to play so we don't get bored with it? (most DLC does NOT come off the cutting room floor from the original game, some are the ideas that had to be cut but never developed until the DLC because they wouldn’t fit on the game itself) I wonder how many people that are complaining about paying for DLC would work at their jobs for free. You already own that game and get to sell it/trade it in when you are finished with it. You also get to buy used games that the developers don't get to see a dime of. Where does this "I deserve anything and everything for free" come from? It prevails in the gaming community and frankly sounds like a bunch of whining little girls.

I wonder how this added character stuff, effects the carry over save data that's bound to happen whenever Mass Effect 3 gets released.... Those that finished ME2, should know what I'm talking about, here.

The majority of the DLC has been free so far, but I love how people still continue to rail against the idea of paying for additional content for an already lengthy game. The DLC that is pay content is still reasonable too, I can spend $7 at a starbucks any day of the week.

Still contender for game of the year. Hope it wins. I won't buy any DLC that isn't a full expansion though. Not worth my time or money.

Obviously I should have waited and got a GOTY edition instead of buying at launch. Won't make that mistake with ME3. Nothing against those who buy the DLC but I can't justify (for myself) spending $60/game and then another $30-$50 on various amounts of DLC.

I love this game and I want to know about about the Shadow Broker, but the DLC is pretty pricey and frankly, I didn't think Overlord was worth it. In fact, I wouldn't have bought it had I not had a bunch of MS points on my account waiting to be spend from over a year ago. Plus, everyone is right. This seems like it should have been more than DLC. Liara and The Shadow broker are both from the first game. This have been a sidequest in ME3.

Sagacious_Tien

Yes, yes, yes! This makes me so happy! Now please Bioware, make a GOTY edition with all the DLC and a announcement of ME3!

I'm surprised they're not saving the conclusion of the Shadow Broker storyline for ME3. But knowing myself, I'll get this DLC anyway like the others I got.

*SPOILER* Got to say, shadow broker had became a bigger mystery than the reapers in Mass Effect universe to me, so hopefully this DLC will solve the mystery or at least leave some trace that can be led to Mass Effect 3.

Am I missing something? I would have thought the whole Liara/Shadow Broker angle would have been left for the 3rd installment. Strange...

I do appreciate developers taking the time to make DLC but I'm the type of person who trades in games that I probably won't be playing again, especially games without multi, and no way am I buying another copy just for a few hours of DLC.

This DLC should have come out long ago. This should have been one of the first things out of the door after Zaeed's pack and the Normandy SR1 crash site pack. I guess it's better late than never but I haven't played the game since Firewalker came out. I don't know what it is but I've tried and I get to a point and I lose interest......I beat the game, gotten 90% of the achievements and I have no desire to play it anymore.....

@13remen I understand what you're saying, but a character like Liara shouldn't have been an after thought to be honest. That's why everyone is so pissed. This'll probably take about an hour or 2 to beat and it'll cost at leas 800 MP. I'm not saying I'm not getting it, I'm just saying that this shouldn't have been DLC.

This is pretty nice, although couldn't they have waited to do this particular extension until they're ready to roll out ME3? Granted, the price of these DLC's could be about proportionate to the total additional content it brings to the game itself. With all these DLC's, maybe Bioware & EA should consider raising the lvl cap a bit, or add a few new things to hub stores to help players make use of the extra credits.

@lamprey263 your right. I bought the first gears this year for 15 bucks and it had allllll the map packs. not to say gears is the same as me2, cuz its not. totally different games, but im sure they will have some sort of 'platinum hits' or 'collectors edition' of me2 with all the DLC and for a reasonable price. And yeah, I hate DLC as well. Just a way the game devs can rake in the cash out of your pockets. I typically dont buy it all, but i might pick this one up. sounds interesting.

@Icehearted That's exactly how I felt about it. I love Mass Effect but paying about $10 for 2-3hours of gameplay and a new weapon/character and dialogue just isn't enough for the price.

Icehearted

Actually, DLC isn't so much an expansion as it is a cash grab. Before companies started these "micro-transactions" map packs didn't cost $20(!), they cost nothing. The last two expansions were over 1/10th of the price of the game's original MSRP, but didn't even come close to delivering 1/10th of the amount of content. On top of which expansions were usually a pretty sizable chunk for a pretty humble amount of cash just 1 time. StarCraft was worth every penny at about $50. For another $20 later on I got what almost amounted to a full blown sequel. DLC has almost never offered that, certainly not at a reasonable price.

Zloth2

Liara, my hermaphrodite honey! Good to see you back. Except BioWare keeps charging twice as much for DLC as it's worth. Ah well, maybe come winter.... No @Cwagmire21, this should NOT have been in the original game. Not unless you wanted the original game to come out later and cost more. The original game stands on its own without any DLC just fine. I'm seeing a lot of revisionist history in here, too. People seem to think that, back in the days of yore, game companies would hand out extra content for free. That did happen but only VERY rarely would the content be anything substantial. Instead, they would pile a bunch of extra content together and SELL it as an expansion about a year later. DLC is the same thing as an expansion only cut up into smaller bites and sold over the next year instead of all at once.

I purchased the past DLC's... and I sorta enjoyed them. But before I played them I already had beaten the game. I just dont like DLC in this format for ME2. They could have totally just added on to the main story and gave you some much more relevant missions and story leading into ME3. Again... I enjoy the content but its not really the way to go and I probably wont purchase any more DLC for ME2 but I absolutly love the game.. This DLC just feels irrelevant to me.

MarcJL31
MarcJL31

At this rate I might as well wait for the GOTY edition. I already bought and played through it but was waiting for all the DLC so I could play through it a 3rd time to fine tune my choices. GOTY edition may be cheaper than getting it all seperate. I love the game and like the fact that they are adding adidtional content, but the price for some of them weren't necessary worth it.

Dudeman315

Dear Mr Makuch: "Following Commander Shepard's apparent death at the end of the original Mass Effect. . ." Shepard did not die in the original Mass Effect. Shepard died in the beginning of ME2 not ME1.

Yes. I truly miss the days of purchasing a game and having everything right then and there for one price. This trickle of lackluster DLC is really getting tired.

Just played through ME2. It's disappointing that content that should have been included with main game is sold at a premium.

by the time they're done adding DLC this entire game will cost like $100, and then they're going to turn around and make a $20 version of the game + all DLC, it's going to make me feel like a chump if I get this now

anyone remember the days of NO DLC? getting god of war 1 and 2 on the ps2 with no DLC, GT4, shadow of the colossus etc. and those games alone had a very good single player experience. these days its all about DLC. i like mass effect but wow. making the shadow broker DLC is like making Zeus DLC in god of war. this is another example/sign of how the game industry is shaping up. soon we shall have extra multiplayer fees, higher priced DLC, priced demos etc. and its a shame, the more these things happen, the more people sheepishly support them and pay blindly. the gaming community just like the world will be over/trash/non existent in 2012.
