Nintendo's racing game Mario Kart 8 sold more than 1.7 million units (physical and digital) in the United States during 2014, the company has announced, following yesterday's report from the NPD Group.
Meanwhile, US sales for Super Smash Bros. Wii U hit 1.3 million combined physical and digital units. Mario Kart 8 was released in May 2014, while Super Smash Bros. arrived in late November.
Outside of games, Nintendo's new toy line, Amiibo, has gotten off to a hot start, selling around 2.6 million units since they arrived in 2014.
For the month of December 2014 alone, Wii U hardware and software sales rose by more than 29 percent and more than 75 percent, respectively, compared to last year.
Nintendo's 3DS line also enjoyed a healthy December, recording its largest month ever for first-party game sales. Success was fueled by Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, which has already sold more than 2 million copies, and Pokemon games Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, which have combined to sell over 2.6 million copies since launch.
Other 3DS sales milestones, via Nintendo, included:
- In 2014, 16 Nintendo 3DS titles sold at least 250,000 units. Of those titles, eight sold more than 500,000 units and three sold over 1 million units.
- In 2014, the top 15 best-selling hand-held titles were all released on the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.
