Mario Kart 8 Limited Edition revealed, includes blue shell item

Nintendo announces special bundle for Wii U game; no word on pricing yet.

Nintendo today announced a Mario Kart 8 Limited Edition bundle that includes a copy of the much-anticipated Wii U game and a special Spiny Shell collector's item.

The announcement was made through a new video posted to Nintendo's UK YouTube page. Pricing details for the Limited Edition are not available, though the standard game will sell for $60.

We've reached out to Nintendo for more details about the Mario Kart 8 Limited Edition and will update this story with anything we hear back.

The Spiny Shell, better known as the Blue Shell, is a Mario Kart super-item that seeks out the player in first place. The item's functionality varies from game to game, though it remains to be seen how it will work in Mario Kart 8.

Mario Kart 8 launches May 30 exclusively for Wii U. Nintendo is no doubt hoping the marquee first-party title will help move systems, something Nintendo has struggled to do so far. For more on Mario Kart 8, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Mario Kart has been garbage for years. Rather than giving less-skilled players a small chance of winning they ruined the entire game so that it ONLY comes down to luck and nothing else. Skill has no say in whether or not a player wins. It worked well for them when their install base with the Wii was massive, but now that those fickle casuals have ditched them, they'd be shooting themselves in the foot by making it luck-based again. The reason everyone sees Nintendo as "kiddy shit" is because they want to make games where anyone can win. By doing that they discourage people from getting good at their games, and therefore limit their audience to casual kids raised on Angry Birds and Minecraft who will play their game for a few minutes and be done. They're screwing over their loyal fans who have grown up with them for the sake of a casual audience who has no brand loyalty whatsoever. They need to recognize that adults play their games too and they'd better do something for them if they want to remain competitive in the console wars, unless they're fine with bleeding money every year like they're doing now.

I'd buy the limited edition for the sole purpose of exacting my years of built up rage on that stupid blue shell for ever time I went from first to 5th on the last lap of a course racing the computer. My rage will be two fold for every Rainbow Road course the blue shell blasted me off.

"Hey bro, I heard you're winning! Trololololololololo!"

I personally view the blue shell as the 'obama shell'

Mario Kart is great when you've got the couch and the friends. I have one buddy who also has a Wii U, so if we can play online together, definitely worth the purchase. Even if there isn't online play, I'll probably still pick it up anyway.

The blue shell is for cowards.

The game alone will not move systems.  If they want to move systems they need to drop the price to $150 bundled with mario kart.  If you want sales, you have to move those consoles, once they have the console then you can sell them more games.  I hate how Nintendo thinks that a price drop means they are devaluing themselves.

I thought the blue shell was a Spikey Shell, you know, 'cause there's spikes on it. Spine refers to a backbone, which would usually be internal, not external like spikes. I WANT A NAME CHANGE!

They need to announce a Wii U/MK bundle. Also as far as the blue shell is concerned they need to put in options to disallow the blue shell. Well any item, like how they did with SSB.

you mean apart from the £59.99 which it says on the site?

I wanted to buy the game....THEN they announce the dreaded blue shell. If it's anything like the latest crappy Mario Kart games, whenever you ar ein 1st place you'll be bombarded with blue Shells à la Twisted Metal.

I'm waiting for the reviews now

I might pick up a Wii U when this comes out, so a bundle sounds nice. I still like Mario Kart 64 the best, I hope this one surpasses it and becomes my new favorite.

@porkjackson  Predictable that someone would slag off a Nintendo game before its even released.  That seems to be the way these days.

Strange, is that why I constantly see double or triple star players winning matches while those with low rankings tend to fall in last place? It's not about "making games where anyone can win" it's about making games that "anyone can enjoy." Most people I see playing MarioKart or Smash Brothers honestly don't give a damn that they suck or are worse than others, they just like that they can be part of the fun and not be completely overwhelmed by what the game offers.

Maybe you just suck otherwise you wouldn't be saying this stuff. Honestly, I can't think of a single videogame that ONLY comes down to luck and nothing else, especially not a racer. Even Mario Party requires some skill in learning the mini games and being aware of the board layouts.

Also they're not bleeding money, that's Microsoft and Sony. Sure Nintendo took some losses, but that's hardly a hit to the amount of money they have.

@colbster  no, unless you can tell me what a person is supposed to do when they get a blue shell.

@fester420  Another boring naysayer.  When has Mario Kart ever not been able to move consoles?  I agree that a price cut on the console would be ideal, but not by the amount you're proposing.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@fester420

The system is already selling at lowest, $250. You must be out of your mind if you think Nintendo's going to drop the price by more than half just less than 2 years since the system has been out. They're not only devaluing their system by doing that (while looking desperate), they'd also be screwing themselves over by taking huge losses. The console at its current price doesn't even profit Nintendo, what more with slashing the price by half?

Sure MarioKart 8 ALONE might not be enough, but I don't know why people treat each individual game as the system's savior. Super Mario 3D World generated a decent spike in sales, MarioKart 8 will probably move more units. The PS3 didn't just suddenly catch up to the 360 because of one game, it's because it built up its library of exclusives, and that's exactly what Nintendo's doing with the Wii U.

chev9324
chev9324

@fester420 GTA will not move PS4 and Xbone. See how that easy it was to make up bullshit?

Ovirew

@fester420 So you're saying they should drop the price of the Wii-U to $100?  LOL

Numbuh100
Numbuh100

@fester420 Stubborn you.....price drop means nothing. The original Wii was at $250 and it outsold PS3/X360 at launch and in all around! PRICING MEANS NOTHING! People are looking forward to games! They are not devaluing themselves because they are still trying to make a handful of profits from it. Freaking don't talk to me about price unless you look at XONE's pricing because that for sure is not worth it.

@chev9324 @fester420  How many people do you really think are out there waiting for this game to buy a WiiU?  I imagine a fair number of diehard fans are, but that's not the big numbers they need.

The big numbers, those masses of casuals, they don't do stuff like wait for a certain game to buy a console.  You have to keep in mind the market is not made up of a bunch of people like us who read and comment on gaming sites, especially Nintendo's typical market for the last several years.  For most of them the WiiU failed to catch them, for whatever reasons, and that's it.

Maybe they bought their kids tablets, hell maybe they bought their kids a DSi or 3DS, either way they aren't going to suddenly decide to buy a WiiU because they are rabid Mario Kart fans waiting for a sequel.  They don't care that much about games.

sanchango
sanchango

@ggregd @bunchanumbers  That is honestly what makes it fun. Nothing is determined, you could be in first place,and one person can ruin it in a heartbeat. That's where the skill factor comes in. You have to find a way to regain your standing while avoiding/being hit with your opponents items.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

@porkjackson

Funny that you're calling someone else stupid because while I'd understand if this comment being speculation before the launch of the XBoxOne/PS4, but it's already been 4 months and while the PS4 is closing in on the Wii U's lifetime sales, the XBoxOne is no where close to it, it's actually in the same spot the Wii U was last year, so I don't know what BS you're talking about, maybe you're being like Eddie and combining sales of both systems, which is flat out stupid.

@xolivierx
"I haven't touched mine since xmas" so that means that EVERYONE MUST be doing the same thing as me because I represent the world's opinion! Is that why MiiVerse continues to be a sprawling network of Wii U and 3DS owners?
