Mario Kart 8 Helps Wii U Hardware Sales Climb 666 Percent in the UK

Plus, 82 percent of Mario Kart 8 game sales came through the special bundle; Watch Dogs the best-selling game overall last week.

UK retail tracking company GFK Chart-Track announced today that Mario Kart 8's release on Friday helped Wii U hardware sales rise a massive (and devilish) 666 percent in the UK. Nintendo believes that a single title can alter the fate of a platform; could Mario Kart 8 be that game?

Specific sales figures were not divulged, and Chart-Track does not track digital sales, but the firm added that 82 percent of total Mario Kart 8 sales in the UK came through the Mario Kart 8 bundle. In addition, Mario Kart 8 recorded the best-selling first week for any Wii U game since the platform's launch in the UK in 2012.

Overall, Mario Kart 8 was the second best-selling game of the week, only behind Ubisoft's Watch Dogs, which is the fastest selling game in Ubisoft's history. Notably, Watch Dogs launched for five platforms (Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC), while Mario Kart 8 is a Wii U-exclusive.

Watch Dogs has now crushed the first-week UK sales record for a new IP, with unit sales 58 percent better than past record-holder L.A. Noire (2011). The game also outperformed Assassin's Creed III (2012) by 17 percent to become Ubisoft's biggest launch in the UK. The game also helped move hardware, as the special Watch Dogs PS4 bundle accounted for more than 53 percent of PS4 hardware sales during the week. Overall, GFK Chart-Track's data for the week also showed that PS4 hardware in the UK rose 94 percent week-over-week.

Top 5 Best-Selling Games In The UK Last Week:

  1. Watch Dogs
  2. Mario Kart 8
  3. Wolfenstein: The New Order
  4. FIFA 14
  5. Minecraft: PS3 Edition

Nintendo has not announced official Mario Kart 8 sales yet. Next week, the NPD Group is expected to disclose US industry sales for May, but because Mario Kart 8's release came on May 30, this report will only count two days' worth of sales.

Nintendo keeps releasing a slightly upgraded version of the same game and expects their product to be successful. Might as well be Call of Duty the Console.  They need to get some third party games, embrace indie titles, and come up with new IP's instead of just spitting out the same old Mario, Zelda, Kirby, SSB, MK every time there's a new console.  This game worked for them because previous games on the Wii U (or lack thereof) had failed them.  I don't buy a console for rehashed versions of old games, I buy it for innovation. And not just a touch screen gimmick.

The UK has been an insanely weak market for Wii-U (first year sales were only 150k compared to Us and Japan that had a million) and there's a high chance that this spike put it on par at best with better performing regions which as we know were already underselling for Nintendo. Even the Wind Waker HD release and bundles pushed sales up over 200% but the overall sales for the game and console were average and not the numbers Nintendo hoped to generate. This percent means next to nothing outside things spiked which is what was expected given it is an exclusive and a Mario brand game.

Good for Nintendo but the WiiU desperately needs 3rd party support, not in numbers but in quality: Skyrims, Street Figters, Dragon Ages, Watchdogs, Witchers, PESs, Metal Gears, GTAs.

Nintendo needs to push high-level hardcore tittles into the WiiU ecosystem if it truly wants it to survive.

Let me help you with the calculation. MK8 sold for 1.2m which 82% of it, is in bundle. So 82% from 1.2m is about 1m MK8 sold bundled. If this helps the wii u sell up to 666%, that means it increase the wii u sold from 100% ( 150 000) to 6.66 times (1 000 000). It only for a few weeks.

A 666% increase in sales....so they sold 666 units? trololololol

On a serious note, I guess there is hope for the WiiU yet. This could just be a spike before flat lining again though.

If Mario Kart 8 made sales rise by 666%, imagine how Smash will do? and we have Zelda, Bayonetta 2, X and more coming soon. This isn't Satan's doing, this is what happens when you get the system sellers out there.

It's too soon to tell if this will bring a complete trun around for the Wii U, but it's a pretty good start. Good for Nintendo!

One game is depended upon to breathe life into a relatively new console?  That's just sad, no one should be doing a happy dance for Nintendo just yet.

Is it +666% sales compared to last week or has the Wii U's total UK sales increased six fold?

Everyone was waiting to play this game (as I found out over this weekend at my BBQ). So yeah, lots of folks finally pulled the trigger and bought a Wii U for it.

But will it sustain? Because as I also found out this past weekend, people are STILL CONFUSED between the Wii and the Wii U. Everyone who left here yesterday vowed they were going to buy Mario Kart 8 for their Wii but asked if they needed to buy a Gamepad in order to play it. SO... I had to explain to them all that it's completely different hardware. For the ones who didn't quite get it, I just told them "YES, you need a Gamepad to play it. It'll come with the correct system you need to play it on, too."

I strongly believe that Nintendo needs to drop the Wii name for any future platforms they are planning. That's the only way the confusion is going to end.

Piris

by the way, I heard that mario kart 8 sold 1.2 million copies world wide, since launch.

666%, huh? I'm confused. Does this mean Wii U is doing much better? Or that it's doomed for all eternity?

For Nintendo to beat all the consoles and the PC, its' CEO needs to get a b3ating from Solange in an elevator, and then to tw3rk on live tv.

That would surely push Nintendo at the top

next step would be for Nintendo's CEO to get a beating from Solange in an elevator, and to tw3rk in live TV.

Nintendo would then beat all consoles, including PC

I was playing Mario Kart on the gamepad the other day while my significant other was watching TV and as I was posting my race highlights on youtube it occurred to me that the Wii U is the best console platform available.  Shame that the unwashed masses don't support it.

Adding to what antiparticle said, most of Nintendo's new entries are in no way "slightly upgraded versions" and the ones that are honestly can't help it like MarioKart and Smash due to the nature of their genres.

Either way, the fact that you've stated that they "need to embrace indie titles and come up with new IP's" kind of proves your ignorance towards Nintendo because they've actually been just as (if not more) supportive of Indie developers than Sony. Whenever there's an exclusive Indie title, it's usually for PSN or eShop. Thing is Nintendo doesn't rub it in as much as Sony does (whether that's good or bad is up to you, but Indie games have been pretty successful so far on the eShop). As for new IPs, they do come up with new IPs, yet the ones who complain that Nintendo has no new IPs are the ones who are ignoring anything new and focusing on Nintendo's obvious franchises.

This is why a Nintendo console are Nintendo console. They owns the best first party games and they are the owners of your games and devices. Sony and Microsoft needs from outside developers from their sucess .Most games from third parties are multiplatforms, if you buy a S or X its irelevant because any way most games are also released for the box that you buy. Innovation are not present on this times, S and M make near identicall consoles for play these games near identicall one to another platforms. Some stupids alegations as ps4 ver, of watching dogs are far better than x one because the sony ver. runs at 900p and the other ver on the box runs at 872p and both at 30fps.Consoles are not pcs and fans think that $400ps4 will run all games in full hd on ultra setings like a pc. The videocard to render all resolutions and frames cost $$400 the videocard only and may be $1400 just for full hd at 60fps. Consoles made games that look and feels identicall from the pcs but in psichologically way. For my i dont wory about next consoles thats probably cost $600 to $800 bucks. I want the smalest , unespensive game console withs games we can play its for weeks and again and again.Afther all videogames are about entretained

The problem is that that 82% if the UK figure while the 1.2m is worldwide so right now, we don't have a clear indication of how many units MarioKart 8 has pushed. Sales doubled in Japan but it's still not that much. I think at the end of this week or next week we'll get the updated figures.

@HBninjaX do you by any chance hate CoD or battlefield or any other games that get churned out with no updates? give me a good reason for me to play my wii u i would love to hear it, they have like 4 main game series which are just the same churned out every game and they have a digital store which is horrid and overpriced when they had years of monitoring XBL, PSN and Steam to get it right but still failed, i cant download my games to multiple consoles throughout the house they are locked to that ONE console.

what I am trying to get at is there is no appealing factor for anyone to buy a Wii U hence why no one is buying it, if anyone is brainwashed its's the masses that think nintendo is the saviour of gaming like yourself, i played mario kart this weekend with friends and honestly we could have just played mario kart ds and been £40 better off >.>

Me, I'm a child of Sega. I have no emotional connection to any Nintendo character. Their games do nothing for me. Regardless of how cute the ' found something' sound effect is in the land of hyrule.

@HBninjaX don't support it? Unless you are a big mario and nintendo fan, there really isn't any point in getting a WiiU. The console is simply not getting 3rd party support. It it a great console, the gamepad is great, and it has a few good games, but it's not a console for everybody.

no, no, and again no.

1.2 million copies of the game sold WORLD WIDE.

82% of game sales IN UK where the bundle. so you need to find out how many copies of the game sold in UK to work out how many consoles sold (in the UK)

the 666% increase in console sales is also compared to the week prior, for example if the console sold 1000 units the week prior then the 666% increase would only amount to 6660 Wii Us sold for the week. While an increase is always good news, without actual numbers there is no way of knowing how good. There is a reason they didn't give actual figures, coz a 666% increase sounds better

@rolla020980 @HBninjaX As a Vita PS4 owner... nope. Mario Kart aside, lag is a bit much for most games. There's no way Mario Kart would be playable with as much lag as I get. Wii U pad screen lag is shockingly low.

Vita/PS4 integration is pretty lacklustre compared to Wii U. What Nintendo understood with Wii U is that second screen integration will never work unless the second screen is really integral to the system. Remember all those amazing PS3/PSP features that really enhanced games? No? Well when the PS3 shown for the first time at E3 they spent quite a lot of time talking about that but it didn't really work. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo have all been chasing the idea of a second screen but the Wii U is the system that cracks it.

Unfortunately, on the other hand what the Wii U shows is that second screen really isn't that big a deal. It didn't open up amazing new gameplay possibilities and it's main use is preventing arguments about the TV. (not to be sniffed at but not exactly a killer feature)

inkeyis
inkeyis

No, those games take time and money to port and in the end they won't sell just because of the audience the wii u serves. The best approach is to use their heavy hitting ip (like smash and zelda) and to use new ip (which e3 should show more of). The best approach to take for the wii u is to have it give something the other consoles don't (since it clearly won't win with specs alone). That's why they need to push the gamepad and need to throw out top exclusives, not rushed multiplats

Wow, you couldn't have missed my point any more. Of course you can't play MK on a PS4. BUT.... you can do remote play so someone else can watch TV while you play your game.

ibewinnerz
ibewinnerz

@inkeyis Not ports of specific old games, but new games of that quality in the future. Give it Elder Scrolls 6, Dragon Age 3, Bioshock 4 and Fallout 4 and add to that Nintendo's exclusives like Mario Kart and Zelda and you've got a successful console just waiting to happen.
