20th Century Fox has acquired the screen rights to Magic: The Gathering, according to an article on the Hollywood Reporter. Fox reportedly wants to make a franchise "on the scale of Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings."

On the studio side, Fox is enlisting Simon Kinberg as a producer. Kinberg is a screenwriter and producer who is credited in the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past film and the Star Wars Rebels TV series. This early on, there are no story details or potential stars, but with a vast back catalog of lore to draw from, Magic: The Gathering could follow any number of potential storylines.

Of course, just having the rights to the film doesn't mean that a movie will actually get made. Next year's Warcraft movie is a rare case in a field littered with the remnants of cast-aside and forgotten projects. Just look at the oft-rumored Halo film or the Sims film from many years ago.
