There's a growing Maelstrom on the horizon, Codemasters announced today.

Scheduled to ship in the third quarter of 2006, the PC sci-fi strategy action game Maelstrom is currently under development at Russian studio KDV Games (formerly K-D Lab).

Codemasters provided the concept for the game, which takes place in a postapocalyptic Earth where three factions go to war for control of the planet. The factions include two human sects fighting over a scarce water supply and an alien faction looking for a new planet to inhabit.

On the human side of things, there are the Remnants, cunning resistance fighters large in number but low in firepower, and the Ascension, an intelligent, logical group that uses advanced technologies. The alien invaders bring bioengineered beasts into the mix in their bid to sap the planet's resources for their own.

KDV will lead the design and development of the game. Last year, Codemasters worked with KV and Russian publisher 1C to bring the real-time strategy game Perimeter to the American market. For more on KDV's past work, check out GameSpot's full review of Perimeter.
