Madden skipping Wii U this year - Report

EA Sports representative confirms Madden NFL 25 not in the works for Nintendo's latest home console.

EA Sports' Madden NFL 25 will not be released on the Wii U, a company representative has confirmed with Nintendo World Report. This will mark the first time the series has skipped over Nintendo platforms since 1991.

"We will not be releasing a Wii U version of Madden NFL in 2013," the spokesperson said. "However, we have a strong partnership with Nintendo and will continue to evaluate opportunities for delivering additional Madden NFL products for Nintendo fans in the future."

Last year's Madden NFL 13 shipped for both the Wii U and Wii.

Madden may not be the only EA Sports franchise to not come to the Wii U this year. FIFA 14 has been confirmed thus far only for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata acknowledged to investors recently that some third-party studios believe the Wii U is not powerful enough and thus are not supporting it. He explained that Nintendo must do more to dispel this "misconception."

The Wii U has underperformed, selling 3.45 million units worldwide since launch, and only 400,000 systems so far in 2013.

It seems like the tablet controller would make it easier to make plays.  Such a loss.

I'm not worried about Nintendo. They can withstand one major console failure after the tremendous success of the WII, however if the WII U doesn't turn itself around Nintendo will either have to do a major re-brand of the WII U or more realistically cut their losses and go back to the drawing board and redesign a console that can compete with the hardware Sony and Microsoft are bringing to the table. Even counting the handheld success the 3DS has begun to see, it is crucial that they succeed on the next console the put out. Gimmicks will no longer work and Nintendo needs to get back to delivering an amazing, standard controller based experience backed by competitive horsepower.  The WII showed that no 3rd party support damages the system and the WII U only nails that point home.

Nintendo needs to create a serious sports brand. Whatever happened to that serious looking baseball game they were making?

Ouch, no Madden? That's a rather large multi-format license to miss out on.

Can we get some positive Wii U stories around here, please? This is just sad.

Sounds like a win to me... remember, the madden crowd doesn't buy much more than madden anyhow. Nintendo wants people to buy its console for more than just madden right? having a 'fake' install base doesn't do any good if you lose money every hardware sell.

My favorite game company N has made mistake after mistake these last few console generations, after so many bad ideas and failures aren't you Japanese CEOs supposed to fall on you sword or soemthing?

GOGOHeadray

The problem here is Nintendo's tactic of wanting to sale itself as a second console instead of a main console. Money is too tight right now to justify having a whole new console just for a couple of games.

@Strider8009 You are either delusional or just plain retarded. Where did I say these things? Now you're making shit up. You actually make Nintendo fanboys look bad and that's quite an accomplishment.

@ciphfer As I recall the NFL 2K games that released on Dreamcast were much better than the Madden's of the day which lead to EA purchasing exclusive gaming rights for the NFL license. Yet EA asks, "Are we really the worst company?" lol.

masterninja9

@ciphfer The Dreamcast's failure was Sega's final nail in the coffin (hardware wise). Before that, Sega was experiencing close to a decade of failed console after failed console. No profit made from them, just complete lost after lost. At least with Ninty, the N64 and GC may not have sold as much as the competition, but they still profited off of them. And the Wii shot those profits up tremendously. Don't even get started on handhelds.

@raahsnavj What? If a person buys a wiiU to play Madden with the family. That would still be a win for Nintendo. That makes no sense. As we speak they aren't loosing money on hardware sales. They need more of them, which is why losing third party reasons to buy a Nintendo product is a bad thing.

@Kano92 You know, there are more words in the dictionary that you can use, and not just use the same sentence over and over again in every GameSpot news.

@Strider8009 While I agree there are some here that are clear haters. I don't personally want Nintendo to fail. More competition in any market is usually a good thing.

Nintendo has made mistakes and is in a mode of trying to recover on the mistakes. What I would imagine they will do is have atleast one major release around November for a major title. I personally would hope it would be a new Zelda or New Smash Bros. Right now we're in a wait and see mode.

@Strider8009 Dude, you should just relax and take a deep breath. I'm sure you own a wiiU and a 3ds. That's fine. Enjoy! Why care what other people are saying? As long as you're having fun, it doesn't matter that other people don't share your opinion. Attacking an entire forum of people you don't agree with is just a waste of energy.

ethanm1834
ethanm1834

@OHGFawx @ciphfer Smart business move. I would have done the same if I could afford it. Why compete if you don't have too? It's a money maker and good for them. EA as a company is all about making money and answering to share holders. However the bigger you get the more you just become that. Which will lead to you either losing a lot of business or being out of business. Then the next company comes along and the cycle continues.

Did Madden come to the dreamcast?

ethanm1834
ethanm1834

@OHGFawx @ethanm1834 Oh I agree, I mean competition gets you out of a rut. Otherwise you just coast. I like playing sports games, but when I buy a madden its like every other year or every two years. Why? Because thats how slow things change and roster changes aren't worth the 60 dinero to me.

Smart move by EA as its a garunteed money seller every year. But sometimes it costs you. I don't personally hate them, but I understand the people that do. You're right its laughable they don't understand why.

OHGFawx
OHGFawx

@ethanm1834 Great for EA, bad for gamers who are forced to play an inferior product because its the only one available. Competition drives innovation, why innovate, or improve anything when you've already bullied your competitors out of the market? Its just funny to me that they don't understand why they are hated.

@Strider8009 @masterninja9 Nintendo isn't going to fail because of this. It's not a great thing, Nintendo fanboys pretending it is is laughable. Now Im am not calling you one.

Nintendo is losing third party support and its going to continue to happen until there is a reason for third party support to exist.

To me the true test will be after say next year, when their blockbusters come out. If at that time there is no movement in terms of sales in a forceful way, then I'd might start to consider the Wii U as a failure. As of today they aren't, but they aren't a success either. We are in a wait and see mode. Nintendo is trying to make corrections on not releasing with a couple of big titles. That was a mistake on their part. I would imagine they won't do it again, but who knows.

@Strider8009 The simple fact that you cannot spell correctly, have no idea how to properly use the word bias, and say "hater" and "troll" all the fucking time leads me to believe that you are a ten year old little bastard. Seriously, every other comment is you spewing fucking nonsense at people for having an opinion. What the fuck is wrong with you? Did your mommy drop you on your head when you were a baby?

@Strider8009 @IAMTYLERDURDEN Strider, you live to much in your head (ego). Stop finding occasions to always be offended. When you live life in that fashion (looking to be offended), life will be a constant struggle. Life is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

@Strider8009 @IAMTYLERDURDEN I used the "butthurt" term because it describes how you're acting so perfectly. I really hope I offended you. Hahahaha! @Strider8009 First, why so immature? What are you like twelve? If so I apologize for replying to you. Second, proof read your shit dude! "In order words"? Luckily, I know what you're trying to say. You feeling so butthurt over whats happening to Nintendo currently is your own fault. Why do you feel so insulted about what someone says about Nintendo? You really shouldn't care so much. It shows that you need to take up another hobby. Maybe dating? Anyway, I'm done with you boy. Go play your WiiU.
