Madden series sells 99 million units

Life-to-date sales of EA Sports' gridiron franchise reaches new milestone, driving $3.7 billion in net revenue; Madden 25 due out August 27.

EA Sports' American football franchise Madden has now sold approximately 99 million units life-to-date, driving $3.7 billion in net revenue, the company announced today. The franchise is not EA Sports' biggest player, as the FIFA series crossed the 100 million milestone in 2010.

The Madden series marks its 25th anniversary this year, and to herald the occasion, EA Sports is releasing its Madden product as "Madden 25" instead of Madden NFL 14.

As announced earlier this week, Madden 25 will launch August 27 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. No mention was made of other platforms.

Concrete gameplay details on Madden 25 were not divulged, though EA Sports said this year's game will "push the boundaries," and set the foundation for Madden to continue for another 25 years.

Madden 25 is currently in development at EA Tiburon.

The real question is: did EA include the option to use deer antler spray?

Gee, I wonder how they made all the money on Madden? Oh, that's right, they are THE ONLY NFL FOOTBALL GAME!.

I wonder how much John Madden is making from all this.

This actually makes a lot of sense to me if you think about it.  The same 3.96 million people have been buying the same uninspired game for 25 years now. :D

Haven't played Madden since 2008, but after last nights Superbowl I think i'll buy the next one. I can't wait to see the new powercut system in action.

I miss the NFL 2K series.

So pretty much, I wish I could intercept all the money being spent on these games, or sports in general, and then use it for...ummm, bubble gum, or candy bars, or concert tickets, any of which would literally be a smarter investment than buying an annual edition of a sports game...Seriously.

My god this next year's name change means it's the biggest evolution of the franchise in the last 10 years!

Despite many people, I am definitely a fan of the Madden series.  I wouldn't be surprised of all the complaints from a lack of updates to the game over the past few years have really been years for the devs to spend time on little updates for those games and ultimately some really big stuff that's been in the works for a few years for this year's version of the game (let's just hope it's not motion controls they've been focusing on).

Lol, didn't hear of Madden for about ten years. So it still exists? That's pretty surprising but not really interesting especially outside of the USA where nobody cares for this kind of sport.

The Madden hater are out of the opening. People need to let that NFL 2K5 a lone because 2K will nerve make another football game.

I still have a copy of the original Madden for Sega Genesis. 25yrs goes fast. I have played 5 Maddens out of 25. 99 Million lifetime sales is not too bad.

I am proud to say I never bought a single Madden game.

Madden will push the boundaries? Yeah that right there is a completely nonsensical statement because Madden has never done anything interesting, just like every other major sports game. This year celebrates the 25th version of the same game...hmm sounds a bit like Pokemon now that I think of it... although at least Pokemon you can't go out and play in real life for 1/10th the price of the video game. I never understood that, a football costs under $10 and can be used for years, but Madden costs $60 PER year...

At times I have enjoyed Madden in the past often playing several seasons and having some fun. Madden 13 I played only one season before the updates and one after they allowed custom offline rosters in that update. It never was really fun to play 13 it always was a grind and included feature like custom playbooks that you can't even use, What the? This generation has been very bad and it has to be because they have zero competition thanks to the NFL giving EA all the rights. How interesting that a sport (NFL football) that prides itself on competition and fairness chooses to not allow competition or show any fairness to its fans. I honestly hope M25 fails so miserably that the darn NFL will allow others to make a real football game.

After 13 it just might fail, I will never buy another Madden until they make it fun again like it was with Madden 2005 on the PS2 (and everything it could be released on). That is all I have ever seen people ask EA for, make it like it was when it was fun last generation. Still Madden 2005 has more features then Madden 13, its not rocket science EA, people liked the drills for position like the QB rings and HB vs LB's, custom playbooks, custom rosters, setting prices for parking and things, moving teams into new stadiums, heck you could even create a player in the off season up to year 30 to help replace a retired QB or whatever. So why do they keep taking features away that we had in 2004 when that game came out? Oh yeah they had competition from 2k back then to make them better. You would think the NFL would be able to understand it takes at least two to have a competition and force you to try and be better or go down in defeat.

Madden sold the same game 99 million times by changing the names of players in game and shutting down servers for old games.

@EsteemSVX should maybe take a gander at 13 when it drops price wise, its the best one in a few years and has a lot of nods to the better days.

@tgwolf clearly one doesnt follow any sports as much as people like myself then do they...

I re-sell my sports games roughly 2-3 weeks prior to the next release and i always manage to get the game for bout £15ish less :)

@Laxer04 Actually it's a downward slide. I remember Madden 2003 being great.

@theend3r pretty impressive that it stands close to FIFA in overall sales even though only one country really plays it, compared to the whole world playing FIFA.

Never say never. All the NFL has to do is say NO to licensing the NFL exclusively to them and then anyone could make NFL Football games. Madden has been losing it's popularity as of late, because it's been the same game for the last 4-5 years. Last Madden game I bought was Madden 09 and I got it used off of Ebay.

2K Sport has knocked EA out of the NBA Basketball catergory without having to take exclusive rights to the NBA license. We haven't seen a new NBA Live or March Madness game in over 3 years now. NBA 2K11 was so good, that EA couldn't compete and just stopped making basketball games. lol!! When they were getting beat by NFL 2K5 they went and bought the exclusive NFL license. They tried to do the same with the NBA, but they weren't having it and said NO.

@Patohua1 To be fair Pokemon did evolve. Its now going to be in a 3D enviorment I guess but before that animations changed Pokemon got natures and genders breeding happend and new types were introduced and type combinations evolved.Pokemon actually grew more than Madden ever did it seems....

FIFA = World International. (100+ million) This should be closer to 150 million units sold considering Fifa is in like 150 countries around the world.

Madden NFL = USA only.  (99+ million) Incredible numbers considering NFL is only popular in the US.

@MinerAvatar It's funny that, all these years later, people still remember 2K NFL games. it's been about 8 years since the last one, which is an eternity for video games. But you're right, Madden doesn't have to improve because they literally eliminated the competition.

@tomservo51 Where do you draw that relation from? The only thing they have in common is selling well. There are far better examples.

wcbigguy4

@blackace You do understand that 2K brought this exclusively on right. In a attempt to gain market share against Madden they lowered their price and Madden followed. The NFL did not like see their product being in a price war and decided to go exclusive with the rights. EA had a bigger war chest and won the bidding. I wish that 2K was still making an NFL game competition would give us a better product to choose from.

AgentRaven77

@blackace another Madden hater, you NFL 2K loser need to let that NFL 2K crap for good because it's not coming back. Madden is the only NFL game around and if you don't like it tough. EA Rules

@179107199999 @Patohua1 Hmm yeah alright fair enough, although all of the ones in each generation were the same (Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire...etc.). I mean I love Pokemon and all that, but they suck with originality haha. But agreed, they have actually progressed more than Madden, since Madden has the same teams every time and the field is the same and the graphics only change every 5 or so haha

@blackace

Consider that FIFA is already way ahead of those 100M while Madden hasn´t reached it yet almost three years later after FIFA(and at least two 15/20M selling FIFA games not counted in the 100M released after 2010) did and more importantly and to put things into perspective, the Madden series started in 1988,a full 5 years before the first FIFA,and for many years now,Madden is pretty much the only american football game(so everyone only buys that brand) while FIFA has PES competition wich also sells millions.

Perspective is very important mate.

@AgentRaven77 @blackace funny you say that.Know why EA snatched up the NFL license??? 2K started catching up and EA was all like "NO! We can't let those fancypants upstarts beat us! So one Exec was all like "Dude If you can't beat em Cheat Em!! So they went to the NFL and proposed and the NFL said YAY instead of NAY.And so EA defeated 2K. EA saw 2K as a threat the day NFL 2K came out on the Dreamcast.Back then that compan was Visual Concepts and that was THE BEST FOOTBALL GAME I had ever scene in my life during that time.It took Madden sometime to catch up.

@AgentRaven77@blackace I agree that EA rules but I hope they will fill the game with helmet to helmet penalty to make it safer and that they let us choose if we want to take our shower after the game with a male or female character, regardless of the sexual orientation...
