Heading into last year's Super Bowl matchup between the New England Patriots and New York Giants, Electronic Arts trumpeted the official Madden NFL 08 prediction that the Pats would win, completing the first 19-0 undefeated season in league history. To support its pick, EA emphasized that the Madden NFL series had correctly picked the Super Bowl winner five years running.
EA is once again touting a Super Bowl pick, but this year's press release makes no mention of past performance. Focusing squarely on this year's Super Bowl, EA's Madden NFL 09 sim has sided with the Pittsburgh Steelers, suggesting that the Steel Curtain will emerge victorious when they play the Arizona Cardinals in Tampa Bay.
Despite the playoff success of the Cardinals' quarterback Kurt Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, the simulated game had Arizona building a running game around Edgerrin James, who nabbed a pair of virtual touchdowns. Meanwhile, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger connected on three touchdown strikes to earn the game's MVP award. The simulated game had the Steelers up 21-7 at the half, but a late comeback by the Cardinals pushed the final score to a respectably nail-biting 28-24.
