Madden NFL 07 Hands-On

We fake-snap, jump-the-snap, lead-block, and hit-stick our way through Madden NFL 07 for the PlayStation 3.

OK, let's get this out of the way: If you're expecting the PlayStation 3 version of Madden NFL 07 to completely reinvent the way you look at football games, or if you expect it to be something dramatically different from, say, the Xbox 360 version of the game, then you are in for a letdown. According to producers of the game, whom we spoke to during a recent EA PS3 developer meet-and-greet, the PS3 version of Madden 07 isn't necessarily aimed at folks who already own the 360 version of the game. Instead, the company hopes that the legions of PlayStation fans who have been patiently holding out for the third iteration of their favorite console are the ones that snap up the PS3 debut of EA's premiere sports franchise.

As we discovered when playing the game tonight, everything that is found in the Xbox 360 version of the game is present and accounted for in the PS3 game, including important 2006 additions, such as the lead blocker controls, as well as the revamped superstar feature and all of its position-specific camera angles and controls. So what's different, then? The biggest difference, as you might expect, can be found in the controls of the game. Madden NFL 07 is making use of the tilt functionality of the PS3's Sixaxis controller in a number of ways. The most obvious implementation, and the one we used the most during our time with the demo, was the fake snap. Before hiking the ball, you simply jerk the control backward or forward, and the screen will briefly pull back. If you time it right, you can catch the other team offsides.

Other functionality for the tilt controller includes lead-blocking controls when on offense and jumping-the-snap and hit-stick controls when on defense. You control all of them the same way, by quickly jerking the controller up or down. It's a bit of a shame that there isn't more variety to the maneuvers you can pull off using the tilt controls--placekicking seems like an obvious choice, for example. The development team behind Madden 07 says it is considering new uses for the Sixaxis controller for future versions of the series and is trying to find the sweet spot where the tilt controls add to the gameplay, as opposed to merely being a gimmick.

Though it will have new controls and all the same content as the 360 game, the PS3 version of Madden will have a few graphical treats in store for fans as well. You'll notice small differences, such as new transitions during walk-ups and in between plays, as well as improved grass textures. Physics-based gang tackles are an important addition as well--if a ball carrier is hit low, his body will turn one way; when he's hit by a second defender high, he will buckle in an entirely new direction. It's a subtle but important addition, especially for the outspoken hardcore Madden contingent who lives and breathes by those kinds of true-to-Sunday details.

Though the PS3 version of Madden NFL 07 is well on its way to becoming a solid debut for the series, there won't be much reason to own both this version and the Xbox 360 version of the game, and if you are looking for an entirely new take on Madden, you're probably going to want to try out the Nintendo Wii version of the game. If, however, you find yourself one of the lucky few in possession of a PlayStation 3 on launch day--and you haven't yet played the Xbox 360 version of the game--then Madden NFL 07 for the PS3 will be waiting there for you on store shelves, wondering just what took you so long. Expect our full review after the game is released in mid-November.

akuya32... dead right. The 360 version is horrible. Yes, the graphics and the sound are all great, but what about the gameplay? I mean, playing the game is the point of games right? Or do I have it mixed up? I hope the game incorporates more features than said in the review above, but knowing EA's lazy @$$, there probably won't. We'll just have to wait and see.

Physics based gang tackling. What a BS lie. Look at the preview on gametrailers.com. Thats sad assed canned animated tackling.

I just hope the controls (read:BUTTON LAYOUT) is the same on PS3 as it is on PS2. All the pre-snap stuff stuff you need to do is way easier on Playstation, for me least. But for real? I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT 2K SPORTS FOOTBAL GAME. Damn this accursed exclusivity law. 2K sports had a great product that, dare I say, looked alot better than Madden in terms of presentation. Just look at NBA 2K7 for 360. That $#!t looks real, man. If only EA could get the football game to look like that but play like the Madden we all love. We know Visual Concepts can do it.

If its like the 360 version then the game will be shallow and it will stink. Yes the 360 version looks great, but to me I don't think the game holds a candle to the ps2 version as in gameplay. Its the little things such as player lock on defense as well as line audibles that should be in the game (like it is in the ps2 version). Again, if it's just like the 360 version I will pass cause I wasn't impressed besides x-box live (and yes I have both versions and I haven't touched the 360 version in 2 months).

IMO it's going to be hard to tell the difference between PS3 and 360 versions visually. You are not going to be able to judge a system's power especially by EA because they are lazy. Ea will get the game to look decent for both systems but won't put any extra effort into making one version better than the other. It's going to be same this generation as it was the last.

So this version has takes advantage of the sixaxis controller, but other wise better grass textures, isn't much of an improvment. The artical says it's pretty much the same as the 360 version ecept the tilt feature and some extra "walk ups between plays." If you had the 360 version since Aug this version would be a waste of time. Lets see what happens next year when EA has an equal amount of time to work on both versions. I'm willing to bet the both look visually the same.(May the tilt controls will be in the PS3 version of the game, but I know for certain Madden 08 /If its called that next year, will be visually Identical. they're going to go back to there usual slack off selves after these launches are done) This is all hype to get PS3 fans to go out and buy this version of madden "If you were holding out for the PS3 version" which makes great business sense. But how do you compare 400,000 PS3 at launch to posible 500,000 Madden 07s sold on the 360? If the so called inferior version sells more then the superior version will it realy matter? As far as the PS3 is concerned I agree with avalanche201 s3lFc0nTr0l Its quite simple why people hate madden. If Madden was such as great game, and or product, why did they have to take out the competition? It makes perfect business sense but, If your product was so superior why were less people buying and more people buying the other product? was it because of the price? I don't think so because if something is cheeper and no good, or if the consumers don't want it they won't buy it its as simple as that. I don't totaly blame EA for that, they make trash sports games. How ever I blame THE NFL for this one, they are totally stupid, they don't realise that despite their stalks lossing or gaining value with their revenue would be alot higher if they had multiple gaming licenses out there selling their product. But what do I know? ruffemup Its good see that somebody else besides me isn't blind to EA's whole sceme. they are deffinately bleeding us dry.

Dude, first person was in the 2k series by sega. If you would play other games besides Madden, you would know this.

Hey what would be really cool is if they made madden have a first person mode. where you are right inside the helmet and you have to fight through the linemen your self and get the sack. and for online play every player on the feild was a real pirson all plain in a first person view. Just somthing i thought would be kinda cool and different from every other football game.

when I said what I said I was more ripping on the ps3 then EA. I love madden this year. The xbox 360 commercial says it all, high def gaming now!!! in fact for over a year now!! There is nothing that shows the ps3 is going to be any better as far as power is concered and quite frankly im glad to see it. Even though I will probably will buy it eventually it will be the first console in a very long time that I will buy....after a while. I have to have MGS4 its as simple as that, but I love to see overconfident sony get a punch in the stomach, and i like people like G4 and others eat thier words when they ripped the 360 so hard, so hard in fact I almost didnt buy it. 360 in the end is already a better system, xbox live is just one reason why, downloading a game demo before you buy....briliant!!! Playstation premise that people will buy these games again for gang tackeling is SOOO far off base.

I personally love Madden. What I do not love is the constant cutting of very important features to Madden. Playing defense on Madden 07 makes me feel like a retarded, epileptic monkey. I have no real control over my defense before the snap. I can't convert a zone coverage to a man coverage, the audible system is a joke. And after the ball is in the air, or it's being run, the strafe button might as well be a slushie dispenser for all the good it does. Not to mention, you cannot create a team, and when you create a player, his attributes are determined by your ability to perfom in the most asanine drills. I love Madden. Madden '05 that is.

why do people hate madden?! i dont get it. i will say i was just thinking about these controls while playing madden07 on the ps2. i was thinking, it woiuld be awesome if you could move the controller forward to highlight, or left or right to juke. pretty sweet.

Haven't buy a Madden game since 2004.NFL 2K5 by 2K sports was the last and best football sim I'd played and I'm just counting the days when EA lincensing exclusivity is up so I can pre-order NFL 2K8.In the meantime I'll just be playing NBA 2K and Winning Eleven soccer, those games are awsome and I don't even really like soccer. Why in Madden does the home crowds get so loud when the visiting team score? Why do the player celebrate when they score and they're losing by 70?

Instead, the company hopes that the legions of PlayStation fans who have been patiently holding out for the third iteration of their favorite console are the ones that snap up the PS3 debut of EA's premiere sports franchise. " I guess this GS's way of saying that Madden for the PS3 is just a cheap port from the 360. EA is just churning these games accross the platforms. EA is a huge company. With enormous resources, they could easily have made this the best Madden ever. But, no they are simply milking the franchise for every single last dollar. I also wish that GS would stop giving EA so much positive commentary. However, just like EA apparently GS is trying to squeeze out every possible dollar for them too. Who loses? Well, its us, the gamers. Anybody wonder why a lot of real gamers don't play sports games or have simply left the genre behind? This is because of the lack of innovation in the games. I haven't seen much of any improvement in the Madden series since 2003. Not only is EA producing another turd Madden they are putting all their efforts in microtransactions. But I wouldn't mind microtransactions but a "classic" Kingdom from Seattle. I grew up in Washington, and went to the University of Washington, I have the directtv NFL digital package just for them. But there is no way in heck that I would ever, ever, ever, pay anything for the opportunity to play in that lousy concrete POS. I can recall sitting their watching the Mariners and the ceiling dropping in onto the crowd and the players. And I don't have to tell you that it was just a dull, dirty looking concrete stadium. Why in heck would anyone want that? Let alone be givent he "opportunity" to pay for it. EA has to have some intelligent producers and designers there. They can't possibly be proud of this kind of work. It is becoming clear that the all of EA has been hijacked by the "ownership" who are not interesting in long term strategies. I can imagine the kind of meetings they have. Ownership: "So how can we milk this exclusive franchise? You know we spent the farm on exclusivity. We can hardly turn a profit if spend any resources on development. Can't you just make a medicore game and spread it accross all the platforms? I mean 2004 and 2005 sold well and we hardly had to spend any additional dollars. This means 2006 could be a banner year for profit making. It will be bonuses for everybody who helps us out." Developers: "God, I hate working here. But what are we going to do? I have two kids, and a mortgage. We are set in this community. I am afraid that they will close up this shop and I will have to pull my kids out of school and my wife she loves living here." Designer: "Yah, me too. I think we just have to go along to get along. If we say anything we could get shut down, canned, or transferred. We'd better cancel that meeting at the bar later we were going have about asking to do some additional changes. I guess I will just shup and draw the Kingdome." Ownership: "Sorry, guys but the bonuses are a little smaller this year. We decided to buy DICE. But don't worry. We broke up that studio. So you guys working on Madden should be able to keep your jobs, just make sure you keep your costs down. And if I hear about another one of your "little meetings while you are supposedly going for "drinks"" "You guys can kiss your jobs good bye." Yep, EA sucks.

Can't wait till the "exclusive license" is up........ I'm real sick of paying full price for a roster update. It's even funnier becuase they actually took features OUT of the game in the transition to next gen, most likely so they have something "new" to add to next years upgrade. Im over magnet physics and im over lack of effort just to cash in. Im over madden. Every release makes me like the old 2K's that much more. Hell, they had gang tackling since 2k4. Old news

I do agree with the movement...it looks like the old ps1 version of madden..when it comes to movements....almost like an ice skaters effect..but the new animations that are being implemented look good. Now if they can only put those hard tackles given to wideout on the open field...that make you scream JACKED UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They move the same way on the ps3 version as the Xbox 360. Am I the only one that sees that there is a problem how they move? they look so akward, the game looks awful.

Who the heck would buy two versions of the same game? I don't how different, I could never buy the same game twice. To me, you're either 360 or PS3 not both, thats just too expensive. But gang tackling, why isn't this in the PS2 version there were gang tackles in 06
