'Madden Curse' movie in the works - Report

EA developing sports comedy that will focus on perceived hex associated with cover-athlete honor.

For years, people have talked about the "Madden Curse," which sees cover athletes for Madden NFL series suffer injuries or misfortune. Now, publisher Electronic Arts is apparently looking to turn the Madden curse into a major motion picture.

The Madden Curse may be going Hollywood.

According to Hollywood trade The Wrap, EA is developing a sports comedy about an athlete who, like Brett Favre did in 2008, gets the Madden cover honor after he retires--but then comes out of retirement. Pat O'Brien, vice president of EA Entertainment, is apparently leading the development effort for the project, which is in its early stages.

Perceived or real, the Madden Curse has been eerily consistent. In 2009, Madden NFL 10 co-cover star Troy Polamalu suffered a knee injury in the second quarter of the season opener. After a string of injuries, 2007 cover star Shaun Alexander went from the NFL's Most Valuable Player to being a backup running back in just two years.

The list goes on: Madden NFL 06 cover athlete Donovan McNabb suffered a season-ending hernia halfway through the year. Finally, 2004 cover athlete Michael Vick missed most of the subsequent season due to a major leg injury--before he was suspended due to involvement in gambling and dog-fighting crimes several years later. Current cover athlete Drew Brees has remained unscathed this season--so far, anyway.

If Madden narrates the entire thing while tipsy from too much wine and turducken, then MAYBE this could be funny. Oh, wait lets do something better. Lets do a documentary about how EA didn't want to compete with SEGA so they killed NFL 2k. Thats good for a laugh!

I only watch giant monster movies and stuff by Pixar these days as far as movies go. This sounds like it'll be a bomb, but it will bomb in a hilarious fashion. I eagerly await the scathing reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Might as well give this movie to Uwe Boll. It's already a terrible idea.

You may be better off believing in what goes around comes around. But a game cover curse? Its the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. I guess it is a surprise to these people that people get hurt in football even if they appear on the cover of Madden... And I don't have any sympathy for a dog killer, Vick is a tremendous athlete ++ and I guess he paid his dues (not enough for me). I wouldn't consider gambling and dog fighting a curse. He did that to himself. And if what goes around comes around exists, we should expect to see sophisticated dogs gambling at man-fights. Man-fights for M.Vick and his fancy FOOSBALL friends.

Maybe it isn't just confined to Madden. Rooney now sucks and he's on the FIFA cover. Tiger Woods, just look at that winner.

@DiscretionsMX6 An ESPN 30 for 30 documentary would be instant WIN. However, I see this as nothing more than a short DVD extra that comes with the game for preordering or an extra movie on the game disc.

Oh snaps... I totally forgot Brees is on the cover this year! Maybe he can break the curse and take his squad to another Super Bowl. Or maybe this tongue and cheek sports comedy might have the ultimate pitch when something terrible happens these last few weeks... I sure hope not @_@

A comedy short, straight to DVD mockumentary, but not a full-length movie.

Hollywood has clearly run out of ideas. lolz. Still, if it's a sorta mock-umentary kind of film, it has the potential to be funny.

Honestly, this movie sounds like it should just be a half hour documentary for TV instead.

This sounds like a great idea for the ESPN "30 for 30" series, but not for a full length movie

@swamptick Of those twenty years you mention, John Madden was on nearly half of them. They didn't start putting athletes on the cover until 1999. And while only three examples are cited here, but there are enough others for football fans to be well aware of the "curse".

Drew Brees may not have been injured this year but his performance on the field hasn't been as consistent as it was last year.

@gideonkain I am not saying something like this isn't common, I just think its a really bad idea, and it would probably flop.

This WILL work, and be epic...want to know why?. For once...we will get a videogame movie, that INTENDS to fail/be bad, so it will do just what it is meant to do.

I think its a good idea. @revanknight A for-profit corporation interested in money?! That is a sad state of affairs.

The Madden Curse has NOT been eerily predictable. Your math and your journalism are once again HORRIBLE Gamespot. You site three....THREE cover athletes out of over TWENTY YEARS who have had a 'curse' type situation. HOW IN THE WORLD IS THAT PREDICTABLE. Those odds are laughable at best. This whole story about Brett is obviously NOT about the curse. Brett came OUT of retirement only to have one of the BEST years of his AMAZING career last year. I thought you guys were supposed to be journalists. What a joke.
