Lumines Live! puzzling out global warming

Portion of proceeds from Q Entertainment puzzler update will go to eco-friendly causes; Lost Planet maps, Surf's up demo also available today.

by

A new wave of updates for Lumines Live! is set to hit Xbox Live Marketplace next Wednesday, and Q Entertainment will be using it, at least in part, to promote a global cause.

From June 27 to July 17, Q will donate a portion of the revenue generated by the SOS Charity Campaign Pack to climate-protection organizations and causes. Featured in the pack will be a remixed version of Genki Rockets' "Heavenly Rocket" skin, as well as "House66" by Sugiurumn, "4x4 Bricks" by Techriders, and "Cosmic Humming" by Muku. The skin pack will run for 350 Microsoft points ($4.37).

Benevolence aside, an update for Lumines Live!'s challenge mode will also be available next Wednesday. The booster pack will inject 20 new skins into the rhythm game. Of note from the new content is a specially designed skin featuring the work of artist/musician Masakatsu Takagi. The booster pack will cost 600 Microsoft points ($7.50).

Also available will be four new picture packs that feature five different avatars each, as well as the game's Xbox Live theme pack, designed by game art director Katsumi Yokota. Each picture pack runs for 100 Microsoft points ($1.25), while Theme Pack 1 will cost gamers 150 Microsoft points ($1.87).

Today also saw the release of two pieces of content altogether unassociated with Lumines Live!. As previously reported, Lost Planet's third map pack is now available today for 400 Microsoft points ($5). Also available today is a demo for the film-to-video game adaptation of the animated feature Surf's Up, which, like all other demos, is free.

Man-made climate change does not exist. The climate goes through cycles of warming and cooling on its own. The fact is the predominating factor in the equation is one in which we have NO means to measure, and that's precipitation. Also, the dominant greenhouse gas is NOT carbon dioxide or any scary chemical, it's WATER VAPOR. The amount of gases we contribute, as humans, into the atmosphere and below is minimal compared to the natural components already there. Here's an interesting fact for all those who support the idea of planting trees as "carbon credits," when a tree dies it RELEASES any and all the carbon dioxide it has absorbed thoughout its life back into the atmosphere, thus defeating its original purpose. There is no science behind the grand global warming farse, it's purely political. Should we recycle, use less energy, etc? Yep, it's important to be good stewards of the planet. Are we, specifically Americans, to blame for any immediate climate change? No. If you're going to blame anybody, blame China, who produce polutants that migrate accross oceans and continents unchecked. Don't pick on us because we're successful, despite the popularity of doing so.

@ WhiteSnake5000 I hate to say it but the government and big business does not want a cure for Cancer or any other major disease. because they make way more money form treating a disease than they do curing it.

Why does everything have to be about money? We can stop cancer, global warming, etc. Only the catch is that money is required.

Wow, I was amazed by the fact that "some people don´t believe in global warming". To me that´s like saying "I don´t believe in gravitational forces" but I guess everyone is entitled to believe what they want, or not.

Hey, Miracle_Air, Last time I checked, it's called GameSpot. They report on games. This article is about a game. Your hypocrisy overwhelms me; you profess an opinion on the matter ("I really think it's unnecessary"), yet you object to the article because "it's not that important". If you truly believed it was not important you would not have cared enough to read the article, form an opinion, and comment on the article. Advocating ignorance is one thing, but GameSpot has the right to post any news they want on the site whether you like it or not. If you have a problem with that I suggest you quit reading the offending article, or better yet, don't visit GameSpot if you find the headlines irresistibly attracting you to articles you do not wish to read. That's how it should be. Though if you do like GameSpot and gaming in general, you should just act "M for Mature" and read only what you care for on the site instead of whining like a "T for Teen" when something crops up that doesn't fit with your worldview. Besides, nobody's "forcing [their] view" on anything here. This article isn't an opinion piece, it's news, 100% objective gaming related news. Furthermore, I did not encounter any scientific statements or even environmentally related links in the article. In fact, the article seems to be more about the new Xbox Live content than the controversial global warming issue not even mentioned in the copy. As for your question of whether political views should be brought into gaming; that's up to each company to decide. When you decide to bless us with your own game development studio, by all means don't bring politics into your games. I don't even see how political views are brought into gaming here; Q Entertainment is just trying to do something nice and if some of you weren't being so petty, stubborn, or ignorant you'd realize there's nothing more to it. Thanks for reading, have a pleasant day (take that as you will).

Miracle_Air, they just said a portion of proceeds go to eco-friendly causes. Don't blow up over it. They're not re-educating you about anything. BTW, maybe you should just boycott Microsoft if you really seem to hate idealists. Bill Gates is always giving his money away to where it's truly needed in the world.

Miracle_Air
Miracle_Air

I'm just asking, did there seriously need to be political views brought into gaming? I'm calling it bull**** because I really think it's unnecessary to do this... Not all of us believe in global warming and some people just need to accept that, especially all the people shoving down all these scientific statements down our throats. You believe what you want to believe, there are plenty of people who choose to ignore facts and opinions and we have a right to do so as well. I don't go forcing my view on religion and politics down peoples throats, you guys shouldn't either. That's how it should be. And for the last damn time, we're gamers, not politicians. Is this called GovernmentSpot? No, last time I checked, it's called GAMESPOT. Please leave anything non-gaming related out of the news because it's not that important that we know about the whole factor of where the money is going to or whatever.

I know it is summer - but it is a millionth of a degree warmer then it was when dinosaurs ruled the planet - maaaaannnn.... we are killing the world man - cause the world has a soul ... maaaaaaannnn and all this time I just KNEW the sun made the planet warmer. "Their simply isn't enough GOOD evidence on the fact that global warming is (it isn't) happening." And where is the evidence that no global warming is happening if you are so sure? I wouldn't want to take a chance. Energy wasting isn't good anyway.

I just thought I'd throw a book suggestion out there for anyone who still thinks global warming is a proven theory. Read Michael Crichton's "State of Fear." In addition to a really interesting story, it has a massive bibliography of environmental references and evidence both for and against global warming that are meshed into the story in various places. The story is about environmental terrorism being used to bully up support for the Sudden Climate Change theory, and involves using modern technology that actually exists to generate hurricanes, floods, tidal waves, and even break off massive ice bergs. It's a good read, and it's really an eye-opener too.

Since their is no such thing as global warming, this is stupid. Their simply isn't enough GOOD evidence on the fact that global warming is (it isn't) happening. We just have ideas and theories but barely any evidence to back it up.

jord121290

People just don't want to admit global warming because that would mean they'd have to change their way of life, and most people are just too full of themselves to believe that anything is their responsibility. It's far easier to dismiss global warming as a government conspiracy than to deal with the thought that we are ruining our own planet...

Live Arcade and most downloadable content are available with the FREE Silver-level subscription.

Add in the latest Arcade release (Band of Bugs) and Live! continues to show why $50 per year is a much better value than Sony's "free" PSN. At least there's something to do on Live!. To those who whine about the cost of some of these items - remember, you don't have to buy these. At least MS is giving consumers the choice of content while PSN only offers trailers every week.

For the love of God, Global Warming doesn't mean that everything just simply gets a few degrees warmer. It means that the entire cycle of weather is disrupted. Cool water begins to flow in the ocean from the ice that is melted by that slight change (any ice that was at or just below freezing will melt because of the increase) which changes the way the water flows, which in turn changes air patterns. All of this combined equals weather extremes. Summers are hotter, and winters are COLDER. Yes that is all part and parcel to a global warming phenomenon. I live in New Mexico, we are having a hotter than average summer, as well as a WETTER than average summer. We are also getting tornadoes. There will now be droughts in normally wet places, flooding in normally dry places, and the temperature will be more extreme.

OMG, why are you people so afraid of change, when you logically think about the science behind global warming it literally just makes sense. In reality the "cold hard data" actually confirms global warming and and its effects, the reason for this being that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas and it traps heat energy, therefor the more co2 you have in the atmosphere the more energy is trapped within (thats indisputable). Naturally tree and other vegetation compensate for co2 emissions from thing like animals and people and keep levels at an average state where they trap just enough heat to keep the planet habitable. However for about the last 5000-10000 years people have begun to deforestise and remove large amounts of the vegetation that gives us a steady rate of co2 remove and further decreases our planets ability to neutralize these gases and hold its average temperater. Then about 200 yeas ago at the time of the industrial revolution humans begin burning massive amounts of coal and fossil fuels which begin to pour out greenhouse gases like methane and carbon dioxide onto an already weakened system and slowly but surly co2 levels begin to rise however its still not enough to noticeably increase the average temperater. Then around the turn of the 20th century suddenly everyone got a car everyones burning gas and everyones got a T.V. and a fridge and they all need power. More oil more coal more co2 less forest and before you know it were dumping 14 billion tons of co2 into the atmosphere every year and we have 40% less rain forest 20% more yearly co2 impute into the atmosphere than natural the average global temperater has increased 3 degrease(which can be up to 12 at the poles)90% of the scientists on the planet are telling us its happening, we can see it happening to the ice caps every year and in weather around the globe and it just starts to make sense. But in the end there are always a few very loud people who ignore (or dose'nt understand) the laws of physics and cant imagine a world without their hummer and their more of a problem than globle warming because without them it would probably never be happening, we would have solved the problem the moment we saw it starting.

Here's the real problem: Trees. They produce more dangerous toxins into the air than we ever could. Betcha didn't see that comin', didja? Even if I could play my 360, I wouldn't buy this crap. And, of course, I can't, because I still don't have those cords yet. I'll buy the artist pack, and that's it. And that's only if it has stuff Lumines II doesn't have already, which it probably won't. Nice job guys, you waited too long so I bought the better alternative. Also, I hate map packs because if you don't buy them, you're screwed. Most of the games the "amazing" matchmaking system will put you in are games that have the new maps. Once again, nice job guys. That's putting the customer first.

"um, retard the world is warming because we're introducing an unnatural element into the equation: huge, unnatural amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere." Massive amounts of carbon dioxide DO occur in nature. There is a constant flux between it and ozone rich atmosphere. Trees grow when there is a flux of carbon dioxide to balance the equation. We gotta stop killing trees because our acceleration of the carbon dioxide rise coupled with deforestation is going to be the double whammy that puts us out to sea. Literally.

@CodeNamePlasma: AGREED. It won't stop me from grabbing some more Lumines skins, as people are free to do with their money what they will (at least in the United States... they're supposed to be), but I totally agree. There is very little proof that this is little other than a natural pattern. But people tend to be more interested in Chicken Little hysteria than cold-hard data... a simple look at weather trends will show the entire planet going crazy every century or so. Nothing makes me laugh more than when all those global warming conferences that Al Gore was trying to hold during the winter got shut down by snow. I just about wet myself when I read all those stories.

I really hate speaking outside the realm of gaming on this site, but nonetheless... I really don't know how the topic turned towards the climate of the planet, and I don't care. It just frightens me when I see people continue to spew forth the same tired rhetoric, when they really don't understand the issue and don't have actual opinions of their own. Can humans affect the planet's climate? Perhaps. Can we affect in this dramatic way people try to claim? More than likely not. It shows gross arrogance on our behalf to think otherwise. The Earth has been around far longer than we have, and it will continue to spin long after our race gone. To think that we can show shift the climate is silly. Why is the planet getting warmer? Who knows? We haven't been around long enough to understand the planet's weather patterns. And we have only kept accurate records for a couple of centuries, so God only knows what happened in the past. In reality, we could very well still be climbing out of the last ice age, as many scientist have predicted. Do you want to know how silly some people sound talking about humans and global warming? In the mid-70s, there were articles about global COOLING. Yeah, despite all of the unregulated crap we were putting in the air, the planet was supposedly cooling.
