LOTR: War in the North raging this fall

Warner Bros. offers new release window for upcoming fantasy action game; $130 Collector's Edition and retailer-specific preorder bonuses announced.

by

When Warner Bros. announced Lord of the Rings: War in the North in March, it noted the fantasy action game would ship later this year. Now, the publisher has narrowed its release window, letting gamers know the war in the north will commence this fall.

In addition to announcing the new release window for the game, Warner Bros. offered information about War in the North's Collector's Edition, as well as its various retailer-specific preorder bonuses.

The $130 Lord of the Rings: War in the North Collector's Edition includes a Ranger of the North Quiver Case (pictured at right), art book, behind-the-scenes DVD concerning the game's music, three songs from the game's soundtrack, and a copy of the game.

War in the North's CE packs a quiver.

In addition, the collector's edition will include a Ranger of the North avatar for Xbox 360 copies of the game and a War in the North Theme Pack for PlayStation 3 iterations of the title. The theme pack includes wallpapers, fonts, and icons.

On top of the collector's edition, Warner Bros. today announced preorder incentives for War in the North at various North American retailers. Those who preorder at Best Buy will score the Elf Theme Pack, a collection of in-game items that include an Elven sword, armor, and helmet. Additionally, this pack includes access to the Lothlorien Challenge Map.

Gamers who reserve War in the North at Amazon will score part two of the War in the North digital comic, which serves as a prequel to the game. Additionally, players who preorder at Amazon will score the Orc Champion in-game sword.

Target preorders will be awarded three tracks from the War in the North soundtrack, composed by Inon Zur. Toys R Us reservations will score a limited edition autographed War in the North poster by artist Jim Lee, as well as parts one and two of the War in the North digital comic.

Specialty retailer GameStop is offering those who preorder War in the North the Human Theme Pack, another in-game item collection featuring a human sword, as well as armor and battle dressings worn by the human Ranger. Further, those who preorder at GameStop will score the Osgiliath Challenge map.

Lastly, players who reserve War in the North at Wal-Mart will be awarded the Dwarf Theme Pack, which includes a dwarf sword, armor, and helmet.

Currently in development at Snowblind Studios, Lord of the Rings: War in the North will feature "unseen lands, story elements, and characters from Middle-earth, as well as elements familiar from past feature films." It will offer upgradeable weapons and special abilities that develop along with the game's characters, which can be customized by players.

For more on the title--due out later this year for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC--check out GameSpot's most recent hands-on preview of Lord of the Rings: War in the North.

So many different versions of pre-order incentives! Can we get all of them through PSN or Live?

I hope this LotR game is fun. The trilogy has too much potential to become a lousy game like past titles.

@SolidTy Played it in 2002 (rental from Blockbuster if memory serves). I like Diablo hack 'n' slash just fine. I'm looking forward to Diablo 3. I also have no doubt to SnowBlind's capabilities as a decent developer. I can name some bad dev companies and they aren't there. I can name some good companies that have made some dogs too... I just don't like "cash in" games that have nothing to do with the original or clones that add nothing to the genre. Metacritic's reviews are fine by me but that BG DA is, much like many other titles, steps back, down, and away away from a winning title for a quick buck. Once again I must state that regarding LOTR: WitN I do find that it looks great but I want to see how it gets reviewed. That Demon Forge game looked great...and it really bit.

$130 for the CE? At least give out the whole soundtrack. But no, you need to pre-order at Target to get more music. At least the Toys-R-Us pre-order sounds kinda cool.

@Taffelost: when talking about games...or anything for that matter, it's kinda hard not to compare with other titles of the same genre. @SolidTy: bravo for your enthusiasm, but you can privately message that research thesis you got going there to the guy instead of posting it all in a "comment section". Just saying.

@SolidTy No personal insult intended but you were impressed Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance??? The cash-in game with only the in-common title of the greatest CRPG of all time??? I played it after playing BG1 and 2 and was repulsed. LOTR: WitN looks interesting but I want to see some reviews first.

What's all this talk about Skyrim over WitN? You don't have to choose one over the other. I'm getting both! To be honest I'm just as excited over WitN as I am with Skyrim. I haven't heard or seen anything about the PC version of Skyrim yet, so for all I know it might be terribad for me as a PC-player only.

I just can't get excited about LoTR games anymore. Never really had a single title that stood out. And yeah...after drooling over Skyrim for the last month...nothing is going to get my attention now. (started a new game of Oblivion just to take the edge off)

Sweet it's not turn based like Third Age was! If the combat is better than Conquest then it's deffently a game worth picking up.

Snow blind has me pumped for this.. I don't know if releasing the game closer to Skryim is the best move though.

i have to say after seeing that i'm pretty disappointed. the game looks really old and the combat looks very repetitive.

I hope this game holds it's weight. With Skyrim coming out. It would be nice to have as many Good games (choices) by years end.

This games best bet is to be damn good and release in early September, before Gears on Sept 20th, Dark Souls in Oct and Skyrim in Nov. If this game is mediocre and releases beyond Sept, it will be in the bargain bin by February.

From what I have seen, it looks like a 3rd person console port. When you hit s on a pc, your character normally backs up. When you hit s on a console port, he does a 180 and is now looking at you. That is what I saw in one of the videos. If that is the case, then no thank you - either leave console lotr titles on console or make it work on a pc like any normal pc game.

I hope this is more Champions and less PS2 era Lord of the Rings. Maybe we'll get a Champions HD remake? Seems to be the fad right now.

Hopefully this game turns out good, but I really haven't seen any gameplay that says it is good.

@ GarGx1 Well said, then you have guys wondering why the soft don't sell... What happen to December/January period, they are probably hoping all the other great titles will sell out where you live at and hopefully you don't have the patience to wait so you pick up the next best thing...

maybe somtime, way too many good games coming out towards the end of this year that will capture my attention before this

I have no problem with expensive collector's editions, it is a nice option for those who are so inclined, and does no harm to those of us who will simply purchase the standard version. However, the splitting up of pre-order incentives among different retailers is extremely annoying.

Way to split up the player base by offering in-game content like maps to only specific shops. You are only killing the longevity of your games. This game just want to Steam sale in 2 years for me. If at all.

Don't care about all the bonus junk that would only get thrown into a drawer and forgotten about. That said, I am excited for this game.

Is there really a huge market for all of this collector's edition junk? I just want the game. I don't see the appeal, I never did.
