Lost Odyssey demo found

Hironobu Sakaguchi reveals that a demo for the eagerly awaited RPG is complete and will be available at the Tokyo Game Show.

by

Mistwalker CEO Hironobu Sakaguchi is hoping that attendees at next week's Tokyo Game Show find something to like in the demo of his latest effort, Lost Odyssey.

The latest Weekly Famitsu features an interview with Sakaguchi, formerly of Square, in which he revealed that a demo for his anticipated role-playing game has been completed and is ready for TGS. It reportedly requires about an hour to clear and allows the player to work through the opening scenes of the game, which Famitsu called a "seamless" integration of movie and gameplay. The demo will also be distributed with an issue of Famitsu sometime in November.

While the demo is apparently pretty polished, Sakaguchi is still humble about the fruits of his labor.

"Development didn't go well initially," he admitted. "For instance, in the scenes with massed armies, not that many soldiers are present. However, we're performing optimization to raise the speed. The finished game will run at 30 frames per second, even when the screen is packed with armies as far as the eye can see."

He added that the demo's graphics are representative of about "80 percent of the finished game's quality," and that the game uses a single graphics engine for everything. "The modeling itself is basically the same for the cinematic and real-time sequences. There isn't a lot of difference in texture resolutions or level of detail."

However, the gameplay is only partially implemented in the demo. In fact, Sakaguchi claims it consists of the game system in its "most basic form." The finished game will contain a character development system that forces players to sort through moral dilemmas.

"Besides the hero Kaim, you will meet and befriend other immortal characters. Normal [mortal] humans will also join your party. The immortals will be able to draw abilities from the mortals. Put bluntly, they can leech other members' strength."

While Sakaguchi is sure that his studio's debut Xbox 360 title, Blue Dragon, will be out this year, there was more doubt about Lost Odyssey and other Mistwalker projects. "We are working on Archaic Sealed Heat--or Ash--with the goal of completing it during first semester next year... With regard to Lost Odyssey and Cry On, although we won't know for sure until they actually launch, they are progressing steadily. We also have several other plans underway, which I will talk about some other time."

Lol, remember, you only need a silver account to download 360 demos, so if a Japanese demo comes out, just go to xbox.com and create a Japanese account......like, say you're from Japan. Im not sure, but I think it has been confirmed that this works

People seem to forget that we are in the first year of the new console generation. I especially love how people complain about the catalog for the 360. The 360 has at least 8 to 10 games that anyone out there can enjoy (I'm including Live Arcade here). How many games does the PS3 have out there... so far, zero. Let's let time tell. Let's see how many great games are on each console one, two, and three years from now. All I know is that I am having a blast with my 360.

You can comment all you want about the japanese rpg market but referring Oblivion is ridiculous. It is not a standard rpg that japanese enjoy. There is a huge difference! They like games made by Square Enix and Namco. 360 is on the right path. Blue Dragon is number 9 on their top 25 list. Final Fantasy 13 ranks number 2. Final Fantasy is huge and where it goes the market for rpgs are likely to go. Same thing for the Dragon Warrior series and it wont be on the 360. It will be on the Wii or PS3. I give 360 some credit but dont refer to american rpgs. That is a different breed. I will say this. You dont have to like japanese rpgs but it will affect the US market. I myself like japanese rpgs. I have a 360 but I sure as hell didnt get it for them. I will get a PS3 for those.

folks in the european market when you say the 360 doesn't have any good rpgs for it. Let me make a comment with all due respect to you. First off the 360 has been on the market less then a year and it already has here in the us TWO AWESOME RPGS. It took the mighty ps2 a while until it got some good rpgs, and I would say I have only played 1-2 rpgs on there I even remotely enjoyed. The 360 also has some great minds who created FF making stuff for them now. That is very encouraging. Rpgs take a while to make and cost a bunch more then lets say an fps. A prime example is this, how many rpgs do you see EA making. They make few far and in between because they do take creativity and money to make, and ea always tries to take a shortcut and then charge you full price for a half done game. :) Olbivion(it has a very epic, extremely open ended game world) Enchanted Arms(it is inredible for a japanese launch rpg for the 360). I really dont' see what you guys see epic in recent ffs anymore. I consider epic something on a big scale, and there is nothing big scale about FFx- and ffx-12 to me. They are small game worlds, where you run from arrow to arrow, and watch a ton of cutscenes. I dont' find the stories very enjoyable. That is my opinion. Give oblivion some love, and immerse yourself in the story. The game world has its own races, they have their own ways of life. The game world has its own political system, and history.

""Des_Eagle " Obviously bitter over something. That is usually the reason people decide to troll. Hmm what could he be annoyed about I wonder..." We won't know, as we can't see what he said anymore. Anyways, I'm glad to see more RPGs coming out on other various systems, rather than making them generalized towards one.

I don't even need to read this report, nothing but stuff like "Microsoft making an rpg effort" brings a smile to my face and makes the 360 feel more and more like a decent investment

This is nice for the 360. Plus Mistwalker is coming out with another JRPG for it called Cry On. Hopefully things will get better for the Xbox360 in the land of the Rising Sun.

I need a RPG with an epic FF quality storyline and a whole new world that i can dive into. so many epic RPGS are on the way. i haven't played enchanted arms yet, but as long as the stories great ill take it.

OK, Ok, okay good for 360...... but M$, I just don't like Japanese RPG's common factor. some huge weapons, unrealistic character design, straightforward gameplay(lacks side quest meh), blah blah blah... I'm not interested while others are not. So, well, I mean... then GIMME(and give people like me) TEH MASS EFFECT DEMO ON X06!1!!1

amaranth_aeon
amaranth_aeon

Please, let this be good............ The 360 badly needs a good RPG. It's been ages since I've played a great, epic RPG with a strong cast of characters, distinctive world, fantasy, storyline... I miss that feeling of diving head first into a whole new world. And one thing's for sure: most gamers I know, here in Europe, want more than FPS and sports games. There IS a market for RPG on the 360. The genre is not a niche in Europe, it's extremely popular. So please, MS and 3rd party developers: MORE RPG ON THE 360!!! The Mistwalker games are the games I'm more than Gears of War or Lost Planet. And I know I'm not the only one.

@KronikKilla Trouble is, how do you tailor a game for a market where the genre is unpopular?

KronikKilla

@ChikaHiro94 You certainly can't fault them on a difference in taste, no. Alot of westeren gamers would like some japanese games as well, and I think it may be the same with them. Rez for the Dreamcast comes to mind, along with a few scrolling shooters and other games that were thought to be too "different" or to "boring" for the western world. Those games could've made a difference in the Dreamcast's life, and could easily make a difference in the 360's life. Its the guys that decide who should play what that need to be removed from the equation, if a game is made for a system, it needs to be available for everyone. Games like Call of Duty 2 pose a problem obviously but instead of excluding that market, they should tailor the game for that market. And I completely agree with you, when they see a name like Sakaguchi's on a game, its like us seeing Quinten Tarantino's on a movie.

Digital-Devil
Digital-Devil

I agree, but honestly i do NOT see these games flopping
