Looking to trade items in The Elder Scrolls Online? Bethesda endorses community site

There's no in-game auction house in MMO The Elder Scrolls Online, but one community site has stepped in to make trading easier.

Seeing as recently launched MMO The Elder Scrolls Online has no auction house, one website has stepped in to establish a trading community of its own.

The forums on fansite TESO Elite (spotted via CVG) have established a set of guidelines that it advises people to follow when trading, and Bethesda has now endorsed the site on Twitter.

The TESO Elite community plans on introducing mediators in the future, and already has established an account to handle any trading disputes. The community also promises to root out rogue traders with active moderation, and there's a feedback system in place so that established traders can stand out.

There's always an element of risk involved, of course, but this seems like one of the safest ways to trade Elder Scrolls Online items with strangers on the Internet.

GameSpot's very own Kevin VanOrd is ploughing through Tamriel right now for his The Elder Scrolls Online review, and you can read his latest thoughts right now.

The first big update for The Elder Scrolls Online, Craglorn, will arrive later this month.

I don't really miss the auction house to be honest. The crafting gives you so much flexibility in what you can specialize in making so the game isn't as much of a find and hunt to get good gear... or at least it doesn't feel that way. I kind of like that you have complete freedom to talk with who you please, make guilds, and join in a more organic way. Not having the auction makes that interaction more rewarding while at the same time I never feel pushed into it. I can play the game and have great fun interacting with people as I choose and sort of 'solo' through the early parts. In each of the Betas I wrote frequently I thought it was too easy and everything was over powered. While I can't say the game is hard at all... it does feel more challenging that it did when I did the 1st of five betas.

They need to do something for the economy to work.  I don't really like the Auction setup, I prefer a system like EQ2 had where you just list your items at your price and people take them or leave them.  It has the same downward effect on prices without the hassle.

It's not that great. Im level 28. Let me break this down for you. Im in 3 trade guilds. PLEASE NOTE. You need to switch to EACH guild manually in the bank area. So say you want to check and see what "John Smith's trade guild" had. You need to first switch to that guild. Wait for it to load then start your search. It's really dumb how they have it.

Also if your in 3 or 4 trade guilds and your a low level getting low level equipment you better hope someone out of the 500 are around that same level or your items will sit. Like for example, one of my trade guilds are all 30+. EVERY SINGLE item level 7-23 has been sitting for almost the full 30 days. This is going to be the breaking point for trade guilds.

Say if you take a break, get back and 98% of your trade guild is level 50. Well looks like your out of luck finding level 14 gear on the trade store. It's really not that great on how people build it up to be. Sure i sold alot but this current system i dont see working in 6+months.

I also see people /zone yelling on items they are selling. it brings me back to the days of ff11 back in 2001. It's like i stepped back in time playing this game almost. How they have a group finder for dungeons and quests to auto party up and no AH is beyond me.

I like the game, it's fantastic.

I'm always there to defend it against losers and unemployed 12 year olds who simply hate it because they are to cheap to pay the subscription fee. Who say the game sucks (even though they never played it) then say in the same breath they can't wait tell it goes f2p (which isn't going to happen) so they can play said game.

but the in game guild auction house system really is horse shit!

fix it !!!

No Auction House?

So...hows the Game Economy going to be then? Cause if you don't have an Auction House in an MMO, The economy i spretty much going to go to shit and people will lose interest becausethere isn't a way to make some legit money.

Bethesda has just announced today that in lieu of continuing to support TES Online or even turn the servers back on, they are endorsing World of Warcraft as an alternative game people should play. Please continue to pay them money while other entities provide services that were readily available in MMORPG's TEN YEARS AGO.

What a load of bull, there is already a fully functioning auction house ui in game. People gotta realize this isn't wow no one is going to hand hold you... I am in 5 guilds the maximum guild allowance in game. One is my main guild for raiding the other 4 are trading guilds, combine there is over 1500 members. I find it pretty darn easy to trade in game.

You gotta need to take the effort to search out for good trading guilds, and very soon some of this trading guilds will be harder to join

As it is you can notice two types of trading guilds forming the traditional trading house, and the crafting guilds (great for selling mats, and buying their wares) selling it off in other trading guilds. In fact it is like a game within a game if you take the time to study the guild stores you can make a lot of gold supplying something that guild does not have buy buying from another and selling there.

There are easily over a thousand guilds by now, some of this guilds are almost 500 members strong. You are gamespot and actually reviewing this game, making it sound like there is no in game auctioning is a lie.

Yes because having it in game would be stupid...oh wait...

I can forgive new MMOs for not having the same features as MMOs that are four or five years old and didn't get the snazziest features until two years in, but seriously, no auction house?

Can't wait till people start buying imaginary loot with real money and the whole thing gets as broken as D3.

Uhm.. No thanks; before you're not going to let me finish one MMO, I'm not gonna start another and there's not going to be a deal. I can hold this blockade myself up, longer than yours.

@DuaneDog i agree with you, i have noticed in chat people saying "wts blah blah blah" and most of everything i see people trying to sell in the chat, i can make on my own, or find through game play..i have always thought auction houses are for the people that are too lazy to get the items on their own or craft items themselves. Dont miss the auction house at all.

I have found the game to be refreshingly challenging, more so that any other MMO in the last 10 years. But not so challenging that it is not solo-able. in other MMO's i have noticed other players max level in like 2 days or so..haven't seen that in this game at all..i think that points directly at the challenge in this game. im only level 30 right now (started with the 5 days early access) because i want to do everything in every zone, get my crafting research to max on every item i will use, i read every book, and listen to every NPC in the quest lines. I also made alts ...that took up some time as well :) I am liking this game very much so far.

@hrithmus   That has nothing to do with auction houses that's just MMO's in general.  As people level up lower level items aren't wanted as much anymore.   Duh.

BurningUp99

@notfrylock1987   You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.   Get a job and buy the game and actually play it then come back and discuss it ok thanks.   D3 took out the AH and people love it now more than ever.

Also there are auction houses...they are guild ran auction houses.

@notfrylock1987

It's quite easy to make money.  You receive money for doing quests and you can make money selling your loot to vendors. You get ALOT of loot. You can also deconstruct weapons and armor into multiple items and sell each item individually.

Nepti

@notfrylock1987 your comment is short-sighted. Lack of an auction house won't make or break ESO. There is no way an MMO newcomer is going to be able to compete out of the gate with a now 10+ year old WoW in terms of UI and functionality. *Gameplay* is going to be the key to ESO success. Things like an auction house can always be added later.

That all said, so far ESO has not really gripped me though I'm only L8 and still open to playing more and seeing if it does eventually get me more interested.

@Dannystaples14

ask this question after the first free month is over. Then you'll have a better idea and see if its worth $15 a month.

@Dannystaples14  Everywhere I got there is a shit ton of ppl. PVP still has a lot of low pop campaigns tho, my guess is that ppl are trying to get through the content like me and my friends. But the world never seems low pop or empty when pveing.

BurningUp99

@zandrxi   Lower level weapons and armors aren't selling that hot but everything else is.  You must not know much about MMO's or how the economy works in them.  Most people are past level 10.   If you have stacks of mats they sell instantly.  Most people are only doing 1 or 2 crafts once they get into other crafts they will need the lower level materials that pertain to those crafts.   Some stuff is always going to sell.

@zandrxi  I'm ok with not having a AH. There hasn't been a game where I have liked the AH.

altec812

@commando1992  The lack of the AH was intentional. Based on the Mega server setup and the effect it would have on the economy and undercutting.

@commando1992 I can forgive MMOs for being the hardest single player games I ever experienced, as I'm not much of a social person, anyway.

ricku1967

@Nepti @notfrylock1987only level 8? wait till after at least level 10, it opens up more, you can do the PVP then. then at level 15 you can weapon swap, basically giving you access to 10 skills and 2 ultimate's. then after level 50 you hit the veteran ranks and go to the other alliances. you havent given the game any time at all.

Try different starting areas and different classes. Also, listen to the dialogue if you currently don't, as it makes it more interesting.

@altec812 @commando1992  Except the AH is how every single MMO economy works, except for freaking Runescape (at least, from my experience in that about 8 years ago, maybe they added one by now), even with megaservers like STO and SWTOR. Undercutting is all part of basic economics, you can't just avoid that.

ricku1967

@commando1992 @altec812i have never used an AH in any MMO i have ever played and never had a problem with money at all...I dont miss an AH in ESO at all

The presence of an AH wouldn't harm you at all whether or not you made use of it.I hope you enjoy the zone and yell spam when people are trying to sell blues through yellows, or to buy particular ones. I would also spam /say myself in certain spots around hubs knowing that /zone and /yell would be unchecked for plenty of players. I would do it until I either got what I was looking for, or sold something I would never plan to use that otherwise would turn a lucky drop (for the gold value) into a wasted unfortunate drop. unfortunate for being unused, and unable to be sold in a practical and quick way when  something as rare and useful to me particularly could have dropped instead.

I'm not waiting weeks per item on top of having to put in the work to spam and HOPE that I sell it some day when the right people are at the right place at the right times with the right need/desires still there. that's like going back to the dark ages. that's what BOTS are for as well as to farm ad make up for the loss profits due to the lack of an AH. so don't complain about those either, whether they spam, or they farm when not both.

I do enjoy the trip back in time though, to when I would stand in town for 2 or 3 hours trying to find a group, looking to find particular items or peddle them. thank god for the LFG system, and yet people still spam trying to find groups. and yes, noses could be turned and I could be muted by others when forced to peddle my wares the old fashioned way... but if they would decide to mute me that means that they would be either useless or potentially in my way at some future point. so I couldn't care less especially once I achieved what I'd set out to do in the chat.

I behave without care toward people that are ignoring me, whether or not it's simply social or through an actual mute setting. so turning their nose would matter to 99.9% of them as little as it does to me, but that unfortunate few I'm bound to deal with down the road could eventually suffer for it if they were unhelpful or an inconvenience to me because of it. I enjoy those kinds of moments, they're a rare but satisfying treat. this is how lack of comfort and convenience causes some people to behave once they've become accustomed to sensible comfort and convenience.

@commando1992 @altec812  Apparently you cannot try something different either then. I personally like no AH. Since a lot of the game is built around some solo play, it is used a different component from which players need to interact,
