Long-delayed XCOM shooter's website and videos pulled by 2K

Speculation around delayed first-person shooter suggests a rebranding by publisher 2K.

The official website and accompanying images and videos for 2K Marin's long-delayed XCOM first-person shooter have been taken offline.

Spotted by Digital Trends, a 404 error is given when attempting to access the site, and the game's trailers on YouTube have been set to private.

2K unveiled the 1960s-themed XCOM shooter in 2010, and the game has been delayed multiple times since then. The most recent financial report of 2K Games parent company Take-Two Interactive states the XCOM shooter will be released between April 2013 and May 2014.

The last time 2K showed XCOM in public was at E3 2011.

Recent reports have suggested that the game is being rebranded as The Bureau (via Kotaku), after two domains have been registered--whathappenedin62.com and whathappenedin62.net--coinciding with the year the XCOM shooter was set.

Further rumours dating back to last year claimed XCOM has been turned into a third-person shooter. 2K also asked customers, via a marketing survey, whether they'd rather pay full price or opt for a cheaper downloadable title.

Meanwhile, Civilization developer Firaxis launched its remake of the original XCOM: Enemy Unknown last year. GameSpot awarded Firaxis' game an 8.5 in its review.

They should have never tried to make XCOM into a shooter in the first place. Especially a 1st-person one at that.

The reason why fans hate this stupid game is because the gameplay is a rip-off of Mass Effect and killzone's cover-based system!

There is no Research, no Manufacturing, no Base Building, no Agent Control, and not even any Strategy.

If you want the long story, then here's the video that tells it all:

I really do hope this game gets released. Don't care what it's called, it just looks plain awesome! Been waiting years.

Hey , and what do you think about making this a TPP survival horror/action game ? 60's + aliens , a town somewhere in God forgotten desert. Goverment denies knowlege ..... properly made this could be something.mixing stealth and shooting. just an idea ....

Looked interesting to me.  Rebranding it would get the XCom Fundamentalists off their back, too.  Just make it a new IP.

Can it already, looked like crap anyhow.

Maybe this is best considering how X-com fans reacted.

A game without an identity. Shame that they can't figure out what they want to do with it.

I want this game. I could careless what they call it.

Here's what you do 2K: Finish the game, then reveal it as a NEW IP, under a different name.

Don't do what EA did to Syndicate - slapped a much-loved name onto a generic FPS, instantly alienating every fan of the original (Which would have been pivotal in building hype) while using a name that none of the "mass market" they were targeting actually knew (Was funny to see so many disappointed comments on their vids 'cause people thought it was a band creating a game).

Please 2K, forget about doing a XCOM FPS! You don't want to lose money.

Now that we already got a great new great turn based game, I am ok with the FPS game.

Sounds like they rethought the idea of using the X-COM name for this game and decided to. instead, rebrand it altogether. Something they should have done from the start.

Syndicate didn't do so great as a FPS and X-COM wouldn't have either.

Oh I still remeber this. It got bashed by X-COM fans because it was a shooter. And I defended it for the simple dumb reason of "I liek fps lol". Wonder what's gonna happen with this project... it's not that militaristic-contemporary warfare, so I'm still curious.

Look, I'd *happily* play a retro-futuristic Strategic game with a FPS tactical.

Hell, I bought Interceptor.

Honestly, I think the problem is the name X-COM. Rebrand it, and I still think you might be on to something.

who cares about this fps piece of shit, Xcom is strategy game. period.

How much have they burned into this trying to keep the game alive? It's been in development hell for years and not even the XCOM community is appealed by it. Even the creator of the original XCOM disliked it. I will admit I was curious for the game when it was debuted because I had no knowledge of the XCOM games. And then when XCOM: Enemy Unknown was announced, I was much more stoked for that. It's now one of my most favorite games of all time. We're more likely to get a Terror From the Deep remake than we are to see this strange cousin walk into the game store.

But yeah, I think a FPS would not do Enemy Unknown or the series any justice, that is if Bethesda is not developing it.

psycohideo

I will admit, I never played any of the XCOM games, but after a solid review from GP I took a major chance and bought the game, which is easily the best PC purchase I made since GTA4.

Never played the classic Xcom. Did played Enemy Unknown quite recently and i've gotta say, and Xcom shooter can be okay AS LONG as they keep the TBS genre too...

Well I guess we can pretty much guess the fate of this game...and I think we can rule out alien intervention.

I love the XCOM games, its one of my all time favorite series. but i have no interest in an XCOM shooter at all.

MJ12-Conspiracy
MJ12-Conspiracy

The trailers actually looked pretty cool but once XCOM Enemy Unknown was released I think that killed interest in 2K Marin's version. I think a rebrand would be proper, give it a generic name and let it stand as a new franchise otherwise I think people will see XCOM in the title and pan it as blasphemy.

I feel deja vú on this one, kinda like The Walking Dead Survival Instinct and TWD made by TellTale.

After those teaser trailers I was really looking forward to this but it seems that it may not match that original vision. Also, I really couldn't care less if they call it X-Com or Don Draper vs The Space Mutants, if it's a good game then the name is irrelevant. I am not precious.

ziproy

That's a shame. This game was actually looking pretty good, although Firaxis set the bar pretty high for Xcom rip-offs

If they had linked it with XCOM in the first place this game might have already been released, the setting was reasonably interesting and gameplay sounded more involved than that of your average FPS but connecting it to xcom just made people hate it. who knows, with some re-branding and a change of focus it might actually turn out to be a decent game in the end.

Been waiting awhile for this game. Looks interesting. Alot better them stupid military FPS we get every year.

Random_Virus

Well, considering it was the antithesis of what XCom was, good riddance.  Because fans of Xcom were never going to play it and everyone else would ignore it and say "What's this unheard of franchise?  I'll just play CoD instead."

Finaly they end the stupid fps xcom game,we have TOO MANY fps now and xcom should stay in turn based strategy these game are quite rare nowdays

I still won't play the game, it doesn't interest me.  I would much prefer a well made sequel to last year's excellent XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

ChiePet88

@Zloth2 Yeah, I agree and I'm an "XCom Fundamentalist" meself, I was both curious and pissed.  I honestly don't think its cancelled though, I think that maybe now that BioShock Infinite is out and earning 2K lots of bucks and good reviews, they're returning it to Irrational who dropped it for BioShock Infinite to begin with.  Maybe they'll make a better start for it...

Freedomination
Freedomination

@RogerioFM Same way i feel. Always thought the game looked interesting enough, but i'm not that into shooters so naturally i wanted a turn-based game instead.

I hope the game is good enought that they dont need the xcom brand on it to sell it though. The 50's setting is nice but doesnt fit in the xcom story

SirNormanislost
SirNormanislost

@blackothh well i dont know... on the one hand its a shooter but on the other hand if we get to do all the stuff we can do in the normal xcom (building a base, kitting out your team, researching alien tech etc etc) then i think it would make an interesting game

although im far more interested in more proper RTS xcom content

@-INKling-  Please can someone make Don Draper vs The Space Mutants. I would instantly buy that game. I don't care who makes it but someone has to make this.

I'm sorry, but there is absolutely nothing like building a base,or  researching, or anything like that. At best, it plays like a poor man's Mass Effect.

And that's really hard to say, because I really wanted to play an FPS X-COM, like X-COM Alliance. :(

@SirNormanislost Nop problem, it's just that there are some people who think RTS is any kind of stategy game. I once heard someone calling Disgaea an RTS...

Actually RTS = real time stratergy game I actually meant TBS = turn based stratergy game its just I automatically type RTS without thinking
