Loadout’s “billions” of weapon configurations bring in two million players in two weeks

“Very few Steam titles have reached the peak concurrent users we achieved upon release.”

Over two million users signed up for free-to-play shooter Loadout in its first 14 days of release, logging in over 9 million hours in the game, developer Edge of Reality has announced.

The developer said that Loadout has been so popular that it made getting into the game difficult on day one. Edge of Reality has since improved its infrastructure, but is still having trouble meeting demand.

Loadout’s most notable feature is its weapon-crafting system, with over “44 billion possible variations” for players to assemble, allowing them to define their own class and play style.

“The incredible surge of interest at launch shattered all our expectations, and it unfortunately just became too much for our servers to handle in the beginning,” Edge of Reality CEO Rob Cohen said in a press release. “Very few Steam titles have reached the peak concurrent users we achieved upon release. We’re committed to delivering an excellent game to our community, and we continue to work hard to ensure that our servers provide all our players with the same fluid, responsive, and enjoyable experience across the board.”

Our review found that Loadout stands out against other shooters with its humor, entertaining multiplayer modes, and addictive weapon-crafting system.

Billions of weapon configuations?

yeah. Ok.

more like a couple hundred different loadouts with the occasional reskin.

I remember that was Borderlands selling point. and Borderlands had nowhere near the amount of guns they advertised.

I've played a few hours, and I have to admit that Loadout is a fun little game that is easy to pick up. The mainstay of the game is the interesting and flat-out goofy weapon configurations and combinations, which I'm sure everyone knows of by now. The zany yet vulgar cartoon violence and graphics are also interesting "pluses" for the game.

However, I find that the game lacks staying power. Outside of the "many customizations" talking point, Loadout is just another competitive arena shooter with its variations of typical game modes (King of the Hill, Capture the Flag, etc.). There's only a small selection of maps to play on as well, so the action can get old rather fast. The lack of a free-for-all deathmatch mode in a game like this also irks me to no end. The game is still young, however, so I'm sure there will be more game modes, maps, and other new features in due time.

So how many out of those 2 million are using the same gun combinations because they are the "best"? 1.9/2.0 million?

So instead of getting good at using unique weapons they may like the will all be copying and pasting the same gun cause they all want to dominate...

Granted you do get the other 3 people who actually use their own unique combinations, I am sure this game is exciting to play. This is the main reason I stay away from games like this.

best part of the game is you can name your weapons

i played this game for about 30 minutes.  I had no idea what i was doing, so i looked at some guides.  Yeah, they already figured out what the best builds are for weapons, so it doesn't really matter if there are a million combinations, a billion combinations, or one combination because everybody will use the same combination.

I don't like many weapons. One always ends up keeping a crappy one. Give me a fixed number of upgradeable weapons like in the best RPG with the best hard to find/requiring some quests or minigames and I am happy.

Terrible Balance for a game. Match making is terrible.

I downloaded it, but haven't checked it out yet.  I've been too busy with Gotham City Impostors.

Billions of ways to add random unbalanced nonsense to the clusterfuck that is Loadout.

Was fun for a few hours, but I found some features or gameplay elements that, to me, were severely flawed. Of course I think it can improve, but in the end it's not something I think I'll play for now.

This game was a bit disturbing, mainly because of the women, not being sexist they just creeped me the hell out in this.

As a member of the Master Race, these things make me shake my head as how non-Master you/we all are sometimes. Play proper games people.

I'v enjoyed it. Yeah its a bit over the top immature cartoony art style and game but looking at the trailer or even some pics , and tell me you couldnt tell that right away.

@notfrylock1987 What? There are no reskins.

Every part may only make slight stat changes, but each combination has a noticible difference,

and so adds to your own unique play style.

@Solace427  How can you make a comment like that while admitting that you have no experience with the game?

Of course some weapon builds are more effective than others; some parts synergize while others conflict.  But the number of viable weapons is still in the hundreds if not thousands.

@orktar_bunbun  the clusterfuck is because youre overwhelmed. youre not going to be spoonfed victories in this one! Sorry new gen!

@Darkmoone1  Nothing is "severely flawed" the game has its fair share of flaws but nothing that makes it unplayable

@porcupeth123 Like what? A boring war simulator or some overly complicated strategy game?

Solace427
Solace427

@Aldrenean @Solace427 Truth be told, because I am so bored at work that I wanted to post a ridiculously ignorant comment and see what happens. I am actually quite interested in the game but picking up a new one at the moment wouldn't be wise.

I'm assuming you have played it? What's your opinion of the weapon system? I need more persuasion to set aside a game for this.

Things felt severely flawed to me. Might be alright for others, but I don't believe that some aspects in this game are something I enjoy.

@PinchySkree @BlackBaldwin  4v4 is only a problem because you stand out more. its not my personal preference, but you must like to blend in so youre not hit so hard by other's opinions

matea88

@Tiwill44 @porcupeth123  If you think strategy games are so complicated then you should really start using your brain or it will degrade in time from those baby games like CoD.

Aldrenean

@Solace427 @jam373 @Aldrenean  I quite like it, some of the game modes are definitely better than others though.  In terms of pacing and speed it's somewhere between TF2 and Quake 3 -- not nearly as fast as Q3, or even UT, but definitely quite frantic at times.  The weapon balance is very good for the most part, and the basic starting chassis are quite competitive. There are a couple OP parts combinations at the moment but there hasn't been a balance patch since launch, I believe one is coming this month.

jam373
jam373

@Solace427 @Aldrenean

Its perfectly decent and the devs really try to make it as balenced as possible (in which they seem to succeed), but truth be told its the Arena-style gameplay that really stands out for me.
