Live-action Mortal Kombat series premiering April 12 - Report

First of short series to debut on Machinima.com next week, one week before next game in franchise launches.

by

It looks like April will be a busy month for Mortal Kombat fans. On April 19, the latest game in the series, titled simply Mortal Kombat, will debut on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The eagerly awaited next installment in the franchise--which just went gold--will see the return of the gruesome fatalities and hardcore violence that the series is known for.

The public will get its first glimpse at the Mortal Kombat digital series next week.

Now, it appears that the prior week will also have something new for Mortal Kombat fans. Hadoken.net reports that at 4 p.m. PDT next Tuesday, Machinima.com will stream the first episode of a live-action series of shorts based on the Mortal Kombat universe. The event will apparently be available via the network's YouTube channel, on a page currently marked as private. However, the screening was tacitly confirmed by series director Kevin Tancharoen via his tweet.

The live-action series, first teased via an eight-minute film released last June, features a reimagined Mortal Kombat universe and will feature such characters as Reptile, Baraka, and Sonya. It will be produced by Warner Bros., which is also publishing the game. The company promised that the series will "take gamers deep into the history of warriors they know and love such as Scorpion, Johnny Cage, and Liu Kang." Black Dynamite and Spawn star Michael Jai White will reportedly play Jackson "Jax" Briggs in the series.

I hope the series is similar to that teaser in style only!! Looks great, but those stories suck big time. Baraka is a plastic surgeon gone insane?? Wow. If that's what this series is like it'll suck.

Oh man I just hope it turns into Mortal Kombat Konquest like storylines where Sonya, Kitana, Millena and Syndel basically just rubbed alot of coconut oil cream on each other instead of some wannabe kung fu hero goys

Well, yeah Rush_Gremlin, it is kind of dopey and all, which is why they're being wise and making this into a miniseries with short mini episodes and not a fully fledged tv series or movie. I think it's pretty cool and can't wait to see what spin they put on the other characters, of course I still prefer the original takes on the MK cast, by far.

Terrible....though fighting is awesome. Trying to turn sci-fi into something plausible is dangerous. When did Dr. Barakka learn to fight like that, don't believe they teach that in med-school? Scorpian is feared BECAUSE he is undead. So what is Sub-Zero going to be? Maybe a rapper who has chosen this alias because its "cool" And hey, maybe Shal Kahn could be a disgruntled grave digger. Going to play Mortak Kombat, then play it right! Everybody is entitled to an opinion, but the KM series is established as science fiction. Doing a 180 ensures driving off a cliff.

The only character that I didn't really like and might end up liking though is baraka sorry for mispelling his name if I did, but hes supposed to be a creature a beast not some mad doctor who somehow defies gravity.

Michael Jai White was one of the very few things the Spawn movie actually got right, couldn't have found anyone better to play the part, anyway, I'm glad they're making more of these short episodes, thought the first one was very intriguing.

@AskMeddi1980 i agree, if they are going to make a MK movie then make it the way that every one likes, not this fake ass sh*t, like cmon, barakas a human docter turned psycho? SMDH they need to make a movie just like the original or Remake the 1st kuz with our cgi effects now it would look badass..... oh n make a ton of money im sure =)... they should stick to the roots then every one will love it

Michael Jai White in the movie is a over kill for Jax, Michael is a big time martial arts fighter, Jax is a 1 2 punch fighter

It looks good ,but its not what Mortal Kombat is ment to be. MK is supposed to be set in different relms of reality. Looks like another Smallville but with blood. One more thing. Why does Johnny Cage have to die. And how does a famous action movie star go undercover :/

lfebaggins

Okay why are they using the Resident Evil movies' music? Is this being directed by Paul WS Anderson too??? Ugh How are so many people liking this? It looks like crap. Poor Michael Jai White, Jeri Ryan, and Ian Anthony Dale, they can never catch a break with a good gig. This looks like just another modern action flick with some makeup and iconic MK moves to resemble Mortal Kombat. Why did they take out the historical context of MK? That makes up half the game pretty much. I'll check it out once its released but so far, this looks like crap

garbage. they'll never make a decent live-action MK series or film. NEVER. stop trying.

ripping all the historical things and making all the characters as a being of today is ridiculous. It is unbelievable that many of the characters are human in the Mortal Kombat like Reptile, you cannot assume him as a human turned into a psycho. I don't like it, if they don't apply the basics.

AskMeddi1980

Why not remake the first movie; better dialogs, better actors, better story-line?? In all fairness, with all due respect, this looks like "24". The dark oriental and mythical theme is fully gone and replaced with this shady FBI drama feeling. Destroying the roots in favor of new ideas is not the way.

I thought this was for the new MK Movie? I saw this back in 2009 that trailer is nothing new.

@UWantFryzWitDat Warner Bros are the ones who produced the series (and the game). Machimina just got the broadcast exclusivity

Im looking forward to this but im a little disapointed its not following the "real to life" version that was shown in Re-birth. Looks like the series wil be based more on the games universe, not a bad thing but but was looking forward to a different take on it.

Machinima must be doing better than I thought. I wouldn't think they'd have the funds to pay some of the actors I saw in the trailer.

I was hoping they'd pick it up when I first watched the teaser. Happy they did. It's a different, interesting new take on MK.

People really need to be more open-minded. Critique is not necessarily the same as wanton criticism. And if you're going to critique, please be intellectual about it. And knock off the random caps-locking and asteriks.

What is really poor is that people are so intolerant when people try new things. The live action video was cool. Its real fresh. Go and watch the old mortal kombat movies now and tell me what you think? Utter dog balls you shall find. Something new, fresh and up to date is never a bad thing. If they can do it with BOND they can do it with MORTAL KOMBAT. Funny thing is all the haters will be watching the premier. You guys are like all those COD haters that still went, preordered bought and play the game religiously whilst whaling about how dog bullocky it is. Come on guys. Tolerance.

I like the Mortal Kombat series (I actually liked the first movie), Mortal Kombat II (SNES) still ranks as my favorite, and the new Mortal Kombat game coming out looks pretty good too. I honestly think the Mortal Kombat series should go the animated route versus live action. I still can't get the horrible images of the live action Street Fighter movie out of my head (yuck).

oh yea, how could i forget the recession where in the movie business we give hundreds of millions of dollars to complete failures like micheal bay and james cameron only to several hrs of terrible acting, characters, cliches and flat out unoriginal story. Thanks for reminding me how much i would rather want a good mortal kombat movie...

These fighting movies/live-action never turn out well. They always end up doing a lot of cheesy stuff and getting horrible actors.

They could remake the first movie with better actors and a bigger budget and it would do really well in theaters. They have a lot better technology to do an awesome MK movie than they did in 1995.

For everyone that is complaining about how this is not sticking to the original story line..... who cares lol i rather have a fresh alternative story line instead of the same story that we all know. Plus its bada$$!!
