Little Big Planet community grows to 'nearly 2 million'

Sony and Media Molecule's highly customizable platformer almost reaches milestone five months after launch; 725,000 user-generated levels created.

by

The promise of Media Molecule's Little Big Planet from its beginning has been an open sandbox in which users can explore any number of level creation and customization options. And, it would appear, Little Big Planet owners have taken their cue. Sony Europe announced today that 725,000 user-generated levels have been created for the PlayStation 3-exclusive title.

Sony also announced today that "nearly 2 million players worldwide have joined the Little Big Planet community since its launch in November 2008." The publisher did not delineate the specifics of what that figure entails and did not indicate if more than one player can become a member of the community using a single copy of the game. Sony had not responded to requests for clarification as of press time.

Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer said in January at this year's Consumer Electronics Show that Little Big Planet had sold 1.3 million units worldwide. The well-rated platformer has also received a number of awards this year, walking away from last week's Game Developers Choice Awards with accolades for Best Game Design, Best Technology, Best Debut Game, and the Innovation Award.

daabulls23, they added water in the Pirates of the Carribbean expansion pack. you can make boats, have underwater labrynths where lack of oxygen is the enemy, or recreate rapture! definitely worth buying.

I love LBP, the deep creation tools combined with dem awesome physicy gameplay leads to lots of fun. Though there are a lot o' crap levels online, som of them just stand out and shine. And the best part is, its infinite with what u can do in LBP. when i thought i had seen everything the LBP could throw at me it played this loco-roco type racing game, its still one of my favorite competitive levels in LBP! its a fun game

I just watched the review "It's time consuming to create even the most basic moving objects" - This guy must really suck because it's really not hard to make moving parts, just makes the game sound bad when he says that. I'd highly recommend this game to anyone, but especially if you like being creative.

Zedx-14Pilot, if only you'd had chance to sit down yourself and really get stuck into the creation mode, and the incredible depth it offers, you'd see how wrong you are: the ability to create anything you can think of in this game truly is revolutionary.

I am sure this game is somewhat entertaining for A BIT, but I think it is HIGHLY overrated. I spent some time watching my 17 year old daughter playing this, and I wasn't impressed. Whimsical and cute, but by far not revolutionary.

I really dont know why LBP got all those awards... Its good.. for a about 2 weeks and then it gets REAL boring. Specially as Sony are pulling off any online levels that are similar to real Films, games etc.I spose its cus im a sort of survival horror kind of gamer.

LBP is one of my favorite games for my PS3. My girlfriend loves it too. It's a nice game to play with people who aren't too good at video games. I'm glad it got all those GDC awards!

@thetruespin: Garry's Mod for starters. Plus you can pretty much count any PC game that has mod support as letting people create maps which is what LBP does.

Good for Sony, I guess. I don't really care unless it goes multiplatform, TBH, and I'm not sure I'd want it anyways...

all u people who say this is a must have and u r sad not to have it.... i dont like platformers and i dont want to build levels and waste time doing so... hey without those two reasons lbp is a crap game!! O-o imagine that.....personal preference somehow deciding what i want! i must be mental according to some here

Its not revolutionary. the PC has had games like this, with community sharing features for years. Its just a map sharing platformer, not revolutionary, or original. It's a great game however, for fans of such things.

I check in on my LBP every week or two just to check out the hottest new user made levels and every time I am blown away with how talented and creative some users are. LBP is nothing short of revolutionary... replay value is literally ENDLESS

According to vgchartz LBP has sold 2.12 million copies thus far. I know vgchartz isn't 100% accurate, but it's a solid barometer. Pretty good for a brand new IP... I see this game eventually hitting the 3 million mark which is very, very good.

I got the game because my gf thought it was cute and it turned out to be a challenging and extremely diverse game. With what seems like a endless amount of levels to play, Which kinda makes the idea of DLC last gen, when your always finding new user-made items and content every day it seems like.

I would like to buy LBP ... but you know what's holding me back? THE SEIZURE SACKBOY HAS ONCE YOU COMPLETE A LEVEL.

Really? Two million? Or did two million people register the product? Sony's been known to lie about numbers before.

@everyone talking about how good the levels are: you're missing the big picture. It doesn't matter how bad or good the levels are! it is the FACT that there are 725,000 of them. That speaks volumes. Also, it shows that there is an interest in the game if people are taking the time to design a level, good or not. Play it, rate it and move on!

NamelessFear
NamelessFear

@ lukemularczyk You have a point but if just 5% of those 725,000 are good that equals 36250. That's way more than you get on the disc. Sort the levels by highest rated and you have a lot of play value for your money.

This game rocks! Probably my favourite game of 2008. The only thing that's a shame is the amount of people who don't like or even play the game with the excuse that it's a kid game. I completely agree with Fester420.

This was one of the best games of 2008. I was very surprised by it. Some of the user levels are genius, but most are crap, they need to find a better way to wade through the crappy levels to get to one good one. I still can't believe some of the things that users at home have spent their time creating. If you own a PS3 and you don't own this game, shame on you. This is one of the few reasons to even own a PS3 right now, i'm gonna have to go play this game now that they reminded me about it again.

People of Gamespot who have not yet experienced LittleBigPlanet - go out and buy it, and if you can't because you don't have a PS3, go out and buy a PS3 and LBP

725,000 is pretty awesome but it means that nobody sees your level; especially when you want the trophies linked to how many people play it, heart it and heart you.

Every month I log on just to see what crazy concoctions creators have coughed up from their craniums. And it gets better and better. I end up playing for weeks.
