Linkin Park teams up with Xbox for a wild interactive music video

Game level "Guilty all the Same" features the band's new song and even allows you to remix it and build anything you want on top of it.

by

Rock band Linkin Park has teamed up with Microsoft for what the company says is the first-ever remixable and interactive music video/video game hybrid. Built using Microsoft's ambitious Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC game-building tool Project Spark, the level "Guilty all the Same" features the band's new song, but that's only the beginning.

Linkin Park says the "Guilty all the Same" level is only a starting template, with users able to create and share their own versions of the level.

"Since I was a kid, I wanted to make games," Linkin Park frontman Mike Shinoda told Billboard in an interview about the project. Linkin Park's version of the game features a protagonist who is haunted by guilt and travels through a dark environment to escape, but players will be able to do whatever they want with the template.

The idea for the interactive music video came after Linkin Park turntablist Joe Hahn attended E3 last summer and got to see Project Spark first-hand.

"It just blew my mind," Hahn said. "For me, the next step was to see if we could showcase our next song as a game instead of a video."

Some artists might not like the idea of allowing users to re-assemble their creative expression, but Shinoda and Hahn don't see it this way. "Mike and I met at art school, and we understand that once you make a piece of art and put it out there, people will interpret it their own way, and even re-interpret it as something else," Hahn said.

"We've taken our turn, and now it's up to the fans," Shinoda added. "Even if it's silly, as long as it makes me laugh, I don't mind what people do with it."

Project Spark is currently in beta and is available to download for free today for Xbox One and PC. The Xbox 360 version is coming later.

Such a shame Xbone's one non-dudebro jizplosion game has been forced into bed with the biggest bellends in music. Ryse looked like the videogame equivalent of Linkin Park, why couldn't that have been a thing instead of this?

Microsoft, if you want to lessen your corporate image, you may want to distance yourselves from corporate rock.

Wow, I really like the song.  I don't have much to say about the video, but I love the song a lot.  It's kind of back to Hybrid Theory-ish Linkin Park, which I approve of for sure.  Also so great to hear Rakim on a new song!  I thought he was retiring, and he's a god of rhythm and rhyme <3  Happy to hear he's still ripping up tracks.  :D

This game has some potential. More games that create like LBP can only be a good thing.

Guilty all the Same is a good song. The best of LP is in Hybrid Theory and Meteora.

Okay, so I'm envisioning a sort of 90s throwback to those Sega CD/Philips CD-i music video editing games, with a dash of LittleBigPlanet...  kinda....

Yeah, this isn't really all that exciting.  It's neat, I'll give it that... but that's about it.

Damn. I used to like Linkin Park. Hybrid Theory, not the new shit. Now they have soiled what's left of their name by teaming up with M$. Oh well. FTW

[Rant]Not Linkin Park! They used to be one freakin amazing band, but when they wanted to change direction did they go more into the metal, the electronica or the rap? NNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! They went and jumped on the emo bandwaggon -pun not intended.

*sigh*

Guess this proves Microsoft is like the Michal Bay of the games industry. Or is that EA? Awwwwww, it doesn't matter, their both hand in hand these days!

@Sevenizz We should all go listen to X FM instead. That's where all the real tunes are played -because everybody knows that indie/indie-combinations is where all the real tallent is at the moment. A strange sort of paralel to gaming in that regard.

@ssplaya Yeah, because they're just now selling out.  Their first album was carefully concocted to appeal to as many people as possible with the most generic style and songs imaginable.  They haven't sold out, they exist solely as a commercial property.

You just figure that out? Did you miss the billion or so ads that feature videogames?

They were good in the 2000's not the 90's.

You mean early 2000s? That was when Hybrid Theory/ Meteora was around.

ssplaya

The hell are you talking about? Living things is mostly electronica and this new song is sort of metel and has one of the greatest rappers in the track (Rakim). And Mike Shinoda has been rapping on tracks since the begining and their earlier albums were way darker then they are now.

Holoogamooga_

@The-Neon-Seal ...if your complaint is their lyrics getting "emo," listen to Hybrid Theory and Meteora again. Those are the theme songs of angst-ridden teens everywhere.

Linkin Park has always been the definition of selling out. Did you miss the tacky dj in their very first music video?

@ssplaya TBH, I havn't listened to them since Minuits to Midnight and neither do I want to. Moved on to better things.

The-Neon-Seal
The-Neon-Seal

@Holoogamooga_ @The-Neon-SealIt was a diffrent kind of angst though. With the first two albums they were meerly angry at the world. Overnight however they pretty much became the epitomy of emo. I'm all for angsty-ness. Just not emo. As somebody who does have genuine bouts of depression, it's almost offensive. The ultimate in poser culture -before being a geek became cool.
