Limited edition BioShock confirmed

Online petition succeeds in swaying 2K to release collector's version of Irrational Games shooter, extra goodies to be chosen by gamers.

Earlier this week, Cult of Rapture, 2K's official Web site for BioShock, drew attention to an online petition asking the publisher to release a collector's edition of Irrational Games' upcoming first-person shooter. In the posting, a 2K representative said that if the petition received 5,000 signatures, the publisher would indeed make a limited edition of the game available.

According to a follow-up post on the site today, the petition met its goal of 5,000 later that night, and kept going. As of this writing, more than 18,000 people have added their names to the request. Today's update confirms that there will be a collector's edition of the game available for both the PC and the Xbox 360, but it indicates that the specific bonuses to be included in the package have not yet been determined.

To that end, Cult of Rapture is hosting a poll asking users to select from a number of optional goodies, with the winning choice being included in the collector's edition package. The slate of possible bonuses includes a soundtrack CD, an artbook, a figurine of the game's Big Daddy characters, a "making of" DVD, posters, better packaging, and an art print with the team's signatures on it.

As of press time, nearly 10,000 visitors had submitted their choices, with the Big Daddy figurine receiving 37 percent of the votes. The "making of" DVD, soundtrack CD, and art book followed at 16 percent, 15 percent, and 14 percent of the vote, respectively.

I NEED Bioshock :'(!

I agree with gozalo below. Include 360 versions of System Shock 1 & 2 along with Bioshock in a nifty metal collectors box. Kind of like a Half life-2 Orange Box sort of concept. They would sell a ton more if they did this. Regardless, I just cannot wait to get this game, as it is going to be one hell of a sick, twisted trip playing it alone at night in a dark room. Now that's what makes fun gaming.

Screw all ya who make fun of people who collect figurines.

Cross between FEAR and HALO? Pffff, screw that, i want the game to be like System Shock 2 with updated graphics...that said, if the special edition came with a revised version of System Shock 2 with graphical updates i'd pay double for this game ( yeah, I'm lyin cause it aint gonna happen ). As far as special editions go, ( the ones that release next to the original retail, not the later released "game of the year" type releases) ya wont catch me buyin them...again. I did get the special edition version of FEAR when it came out and the bonus meterial just wasnt worth the extra money. I usually find myself looking at most special editions thinking "this new meterial doesnt seem worth the extra money". Though, if i m recalling right, a game like UT 2004's special DVD edition did come with map making tutorials on it. That kind of thing is worth the money as most "making of" videos dont really teach you anything. I say scrap the idea of making a special edition for this game and put those extra production funds towards advertisment so that this game doesnt suffer the same fate as System Shock 2. No multiplayer in a first person game? Gotta hype the living hell out of it then. That said, as much as im looking forward to this game, you wont find me buying the special edition...............unless it has that figurine.

Those were not tech vids, they were game play.

People should only with LE if they are a huge fan of that game & want something special (the same could be said to DVDs & CDs so its not just with games, each to their own...) Its fine with most people as long as they charge just a little bit extra because sometimes you get ripped off. BioShock is going to be very popular & I think it looks awesome in those HD tech vids but i hope it runs OK in Vista unlike Stalker.

It seems to me that for a game like this, an in-game commentary feature from the creators (ala Half Life 2) would be outstanding.

Soundtrack, NO!, Just play it on a PC instead and you can convert the music files (if they aren't already) to MP3's. PC rules 360 on almost every account. Just give me an extra disc of exclusive behind-the-scenes material and I'll be happy. I would happily pay the extra bucks for a decent 2-disc edition, just as I get with all the movies I buy.

Including System Shock 1 & 2 would have been better.

there is nothing wrong with collectors edition's... if people don't want them, they don't need to buy them... it is easily worth the 10 bucks if you are a big fan of the game

I was one of the petition signers. Soon, I can bask in the collector's edition of one of the few 360 games that has me way pumped.

Id vote for the making of dvd but would it matter at this point as the poll is swaying one way and the percentage and is double for the big daddy figure.

God some people are just suckers. The big daddy figurine? The tin is a given, and I think the best things are the sound track or artbook.

Per Elizabeth Tobey at 2K Games; "The game is a 360 and Games for Windows exclusive and I don't know about any plans for the PS3." So PS3 owners will have to wait a long time, or maybe start a petition... that seems to be all the rage at the minute.

Jenkins_2005
Jenkins_2005

Why the f**k would you want a 'big daddy' figurine, aka toy, unless u were a child, or childish adult. A making of DVD would be a good choice but thats never going to happen if they are developing the limited edition package around votes they are getting from the intertnet. Saying that though, i couldnt give a s**t about a limited edition version because i am not going to collect the game, im buying it for the gameplay.

I can't speak to marketing, but I can say that AFAIK, we had not been planning a Collector's Edition release prior to last weeks response to the petition. From a business perspective, a CE release is not worth the effort unless enough fans are interested enough in the game to put down the extra $$. Since Bioshock is a new franchise, we cannot simply expect the interest in a CE is there, the way we could if we were making a sequel to an established title. In that sense, seeing the passioned response to the petition - understanding that a good proportion of the signatories are willing to put up money for the added CE content - makes a very real impact on whether the business minds of the company are willing to undertake the risk of that kind of release. Give me a break.. this may have been a good marketing ploy.. but don't give it any more credit than it deserves. They accomplished what they wanted with this little stunt, they got extra publicity and basically a free demographic study with seeing which "features" they would make the most money on by letting people supposedly vote on what would be included on the special edition. I have to agree with many others on the fact that you'd have to be rather ignorant to the current climate of the industry if you didn't think a "special" edition hasn't been planned all along.. and would have been released regardless of how may stupid "signatures" they got in their "official" forums.. at best, like I said.. it is a small variation of successful guerilla marketing (ala the Aqua Teen Hunger Force campaigning) that simply did some online stunts.. at the very worst.. this is probably going to start an new annoying trend down the line with other developers that will eventually be so over done that the original charm of it will disappear.. sorta like Collector edition's in general..

I like how every game I look at has at least one set of people who decide to be fan boys and have a console superiority fight. This posting is supposed to be about Bioshock and its new Collector's Edition. Not whether or not PS3 is better than Xbox 360. So as for the petition. I like it. I like that 2k decided to say "hey, if you get enough people to agree, we'll listen to the consumers." Way to listen to what the people want 2k.

It coming to the PS3 6 months after the pc and 360 version. Its a timed exclusive. One of the Playstation magazines had a preview of it but a month later microsoft paid for it to be a timed 360 exclusive.

Cheeseball marketing stunt, they were going to make it anyway, but now they have a "mandate" from the people. Good thinking, every other time a "collectors" edition comes out people cry rip off, this time 2k can say the customers demanded it.
