Limbo sells 1 million

Playdead announces milestone for macabre side-scroller; Mac version coming before the end of the year.

by

Limbo launched as part of Microsoft's 2010 Summer of Arcade promotion. After a successful critical reception on the Xbox 360, the game saw release on the PlayStation 3 and PC, and it has now crossed a significant sales milestone.

Who knew such a stark game would have such wide appeal?

Playdead announced that its silhouette-heavy side-scroller has crossed the 1 million units sold mark across platforms. Accompanying this milestone comes word that a Mac version of the game is set to land before the end of the year. As part of its announcement, Playdead also said that Limbo's success has allowed the studio to become fully independent by buying out early investors in the company.

Limbo puts players in the shoes of a small child who must find his way through a black-and-white world filled with puzzles and dangerous, often deadly obstacles. The game won critical acclaim upon release, which was followed by a small avalanche of award nominations that yielded multiple Interactive Achievement Awards and a Game Developers Choice Award.

10 bux seems a bit much on steam waiting for a winter sale. I wonder what platform they sold the most on?

Great, great game! I was shocked the first time I watched the little fellow die! It was so unique with it's lack of any music, just sound effects, which really drew you in to the game. Creepiest spider in a game since The Immortal! lol

1 million?. thats 1 million less than this game deserves. Nice job nonetheless. Limbo it's the proof that you can make a game artistic, visually original, simple and yet fund adn addictive to play. Way to go Playdead! :)

@Bigfatlardygit £10 isn't that cheap when you compare it with what else you can get on the store for that price. Considering I can pick up games like Fallout 3, Assassin's Creed 2 and Batman Arkham Asylum for less then that now, £10 isn't good value for money. It lacks the replay value the fps games offer via multi-player. I wasn't looking for critiques, I was looking for advice on whether I should buy it or not

@MEDzZ3RO What are you on about? It costs hardly anything - especially compared to the length of the 'campaigns' in recent FPS franchises... And if you can complete it in 3 hours on your first play through, then you are a bit of a ninja.

I'd buy it if it wasn't so expensive for what it is. I've been told it's a great game but it's only around 3 hours long.

Good the more money these indie devs make the more games we get and hopefully they will get really big and make something NEW.

"Limbo's success has allowed the studio to become fully independent by buying out early investors in the company" Glad to hear that, now please don't fall under Activision's or EA's umbrella like many other game studios did.

@BloodMist I couldnt agree more. One of the best games released in the past 2 years, and more deserving of a sequel than most of the games out there that have them. (Read COD 27: Theres nothing left to blow up)

Only one million people bought Limbo? This game is a must have in my opinion, even taking into account the short length.

Limbo aside, indie games really have taken off in the past few years. It's not just them getting more attention; indie devs have really improved in quality. I've purchased nearly ten new indie titles just in this year. EA and Activison had better watch out.

I read the "1 million caught in Limbo" post on Gamespot's twitter page and all I could think of was Inception...

I just bought Limbo when it was on sale on XboxLive. I heard it wasn't worth the 1200 msp price tag and when it was on sale for 800, people still said it was over priced. So I waited until it finally did the 50% off sale and I finally bought it for 600 msp.

They deserve it. Limbo is probably the best argument there is for video games as art. Love this game.

It was a strange, yet enjoyable game. I payed 800 points for it when it was on sale the first time. It was obvious how much effort went into the game, but when enjoyment and replayability is taken into consideration, it was only worth 400- 600 M$ points. _ I really got it because it was advertised so heavily. I am pretty sure I read tons of news on Gamespot about the awards the game had won and how the game is unique for multiple reasons. _ Anyway, congratulations Playdead.

I finally bought it because it went on sale 600 MS points.. I hate paying 1200 points for an Arcade game.
