Limbo developer exploring iOS, Android ports

Playdead platform programmer job listing reveals studio "investigating" ports for Apple, Google's operating systems, as well as Windows 8 and browsers.

by

Playdead's black and white platformer Limbo may be climbing onto new platforms. A new job listing at the Danish developer (via Shacknews) indicates that the studio is "investigating" new platforms, including iOS, Windows 8, Android, browsers, and "others" for potential future ports.

Is Limbo coming to new platforms?

"We have already released a game on X360, PS3, Windows, OSX, and OnLive and we are continuously investigating other possible platforms," reads the job listing. "We are currently investigating [the] following new platforms: iOS, Win8, Android, NACL, and other platforms could become relevant as well."

Limbo was not specifically called out in the job listing, but the shadowy 2010 platformer is the only title the studio has shipped. That game debuted on Xbox Live and subsequently arrived on Mac, Windows PC, the PlayStation Network, and the streaming service OnLive. In its job listing, the studio also noted that it is "working on our next title, following the release of Limbo."

@warhawk-geeby there isn't anything disgraceful about it, they're not forcing you to buy it on multiple platforms, they're simply expanding their market. Some people only have iOS or other mobile devices, because they either can't afford/ don't have / don't want consoles or PC's. It's actually very considerate of them, they aren't forcing people to buy a certain gaming platform just to play their game.

@groowagon *sigh* if only.. The way I see it gaming is just going to become one big minuscule DLC mess. And the developers are doing nothing to prevent it. This is nothing aimed at Limbo by the way, it's a great game. I just hate how gaming on your phone is becoming so big. You can't blame David Jaffe for leaving Eat, sleep, play. They wanted to focus on 'mobile devices'. It's a disgrace. Hell, even Bungie are getting in on it :?

They should consider putting this game in the Nintendo and Sony online stores. I often think that bigger games that get the app treatment would be even better on a dedicated gaming handheld like the DS, 3DS, PSP, or Vita.

Try the game with a nice set of headphones. It's beautiful.

@warhawk-geeby true that. it seems we need to commence more operation Kickstarts to get what we want. to hire our own devs as a community.

I'd rather stamp on every touch-screen IOS phone/device in the world for making gaming atrocious. Why are all developers heading this way now..? Yes it's easy money, but I'd rather play a proper game :(

i had great expectations of this game before it got released, but when it finally got to pc i was disappointed big time. the puzzles themselves arent challenging like those in braid for instance. a guy once wrote somewhere that this is a 'lets make some money' type of game and i agree completely. @zzamaro its not a little boy, its a digital code and everyone is aware of that except you obviously. its a man made tool to entertain ourselves. ofc, nobody is that heartless and cruel to enjoy the game because a child gets hurt, come on man, chill. though in case you just wanted to flame the thread - gz.

Limbo looks so plain on the outside but the puzzles later on in the game are absolutely amazing.....some of the best i have played in quite some time... @zzamaro I'm guessing you never played a mission called "no russian" in MW2 thats even worse

nope... as cool as this game is, it's not gonna be at home on touchscreen. expect a bucketload of frustration.

Limbo was a decent game in terms of art design, but hell, it was really absurdly and unforgivably short. Thank goodness I only paid a couple of euros for it.

I don't think Limbo would work on a virtual control pad or some touch screen control scheme. Some of those puzzles require finely tuned controls, not the "close enough" controls of a touch screen.

I would love a sequel to LIMBO as bizzare and weird that sounds. I think they could make it happen with a little hard work.

So why has it not won not one single award or nomination in any forum that I am aware of?

I would love to play it on the Xperia Play. I bought the Xperia Play mainly for games, even though it is a pretty good smartphone as well (but for that matter i have my Motorola Atrix). Android games are improving, but to tell the truth, they are still not as polished and complex as the games for consoles or dedicated gaming machines like the 3DS or Vita. I'm not yet satisfied with my Xperia Play as a gaming machine, so games like Limbo and other PSN/XBLA games on it would help a lot.

@zzamaro, I get where you're coming from, but there is just no real merit to your argument. What you're saying is it's okay to kill, but you shouldn't stop a child from getting killed. Of course it sucks to see a kid get killed, but that's why I would suggest you play the game. It might have more of an emotional impact on you. It's one of the reasons I like the game.

Limbo was an awesome game with some very clever puzzles. The kind that makes you kick yourself when the solution for something seemingly impossible is one that is so elegantly simple any 5 year old could figure it out (thanks Youtube, I'd have gone insane otherwise) A very well designed, suitably spooky little Dickensian gem and I hope Playdead would consider adding in a few more levels, or something extra for the ports. Looking forward to more Limbo!

Loved Limbo would love to see some kind of sequel. didnt like how his spine was made of glass though, but it added to the difficulty of the game so whatever.

@PS2fweak Easier said than done. I enjoy Dead Space and it's understandable the graphic violence there, but not a decapitated boy. That's just sick.

I would love to see something new from Playdead. Limbo was one of the reasons I bought a 360 in the first place and is still one of my favorite games on the system. I wish there were more developers out there making games as special as this.

@zzamaro, you should be more open-minded. At least open your mind enough to understand the point is to keep the boy alive. It actually made me play smarter. I'm sure you play some violent games where the goal is to kill others, but I guess trying to save a child is just too much for you.

Limbo is disgusting. A little boy getting decapitated is horrible. I still don't understand how can they feel so proud of that. Worse yet, they still want to everyone to experience that. Did people cared about killing a small kid? No. For most people, a young boy getting killed in a cruel way is acceptable.
