Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII launches third in the UK charts

Beaten by Call of Duty: Ghosts and The Lego Movie Videogame, which enters at number one.

The Lego Movie Videogame has claimed number one in the UK chart this week, outselling Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.

Lightning's third outing had to settle for third place, with Call of Duty: Ghosts wedging itself into second.

Number counters Gfk Chart-Track said that The Lego Movie Videogame, which coincides with the release of the movie, outsold CoD: Ghosts by 15,000 units, but added that the gap between Call of Duty and Lightning Returns was much narrower.

FIFA 14 was fourth, GTA V fifth, and Lego Marvel Super Heroes was sixth. An eighth of the UK top 40 was made up of Lego titles, Chart-Track adds. Joining The Lego Movie Videogame and Lego Marvel Super Heroes is Lego Batman 2 at 19, Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga at 22, and Lego The Lord of the Rings at 27.

The rest of the top 10 was rounded out by Battlefield 4, Assassin's Creed IV, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, and Fable Anniversary.

Sheep calling the sheep, sheep. Weird ...

Go on hating stuff you've never played. Funny, no outrage for a lackluster cash-in Lego Game. But Thanatos and others are so upset about a particular FF game that they feel justified in leaping all over this thread, and damn near every comment, if it doesn't agree with their "Need to Hate." And honestly, Bravely Default isn't the "perfect" alternative to this game. They are completely different games. And arguably, BD is merely a shadow cast from older FF games.

Interesting: When other companies do this type of thing to a game series some call that copying, stealing, a lame rip-off, an unoriginal work based on previous work by others. Remember when every game was condemned for being a God of War rip-off?

I'm playing Bravely default. I like it. Tickles all those sentimental heartstrings gameplay-wise that a FF fan would enjoy from the past. But the story is as drab and cookie-cutter as anything set before it that previously already had the actual Final Fantasy label on it. And I'll spare you in explaining my dread every time I see a FMV begin during the game...

As for FF13-+++, Great, you don't like it. Now move on. You only played 2 hours of it ... Great move on. Easily over half of the FF bashers on this and other sites HAVE NOT EVEN PLAYED THE GAME.Seriously, the graphics are shite??? Really ... I'm not defending it as much as saying, I got stacks of games that "look worse" graphics-wise. The environments along are breathtaking.

(Example) If you read the first 2 pages of say, Oliver Twist. Then claimed you didn't like it. I would understand from that statement that you not only didn't like the first 2 pages, but that YOU DIDN'T ACTUALLY READ IT, or have any real consummate idea of what the book may have meant to the people who complete it, or even read it multiple times. FACT.

Do you really need to say YOUR opinion of Hate on a game OVER and OVER and OVER, on any opposing viewpoint? People will listen to you and others' with similar opinions of yours WITHOUT being rammed down the throat with it. And your credibility will become higher as well. That's how you influence change. By not HATE, but having your own VOICE, and Supporting the opportunity for other GAMERS to have their own VOICE as well.

Lots who simply enjoy gaming, have grown up literally playing each FF game in its consecutive series installment and don't have a problem many of you FF haters seem to have; this knee-jerk rampage of trying to pretend games override our emotions and logic, or that there's some reality to a sense of feeling "deserving" for What YOU want, over what might be made to challenge your preconceptions.

Most gamers actually understand IT'S A GAME. Not a reason to initiate another Cold War, or some mockery of a "stand against the Mann."

The ACTUAL article about the SALES of the top 10 games in the UK at the moment. I think it says a lot more about you being obsessed with trivial issues, in comparison to anything else going on in the world, which aren't even the focus of this particular article itself.

Maybe it's time to do some thinking and reassessment on how we choose to respond to commercial stimuli. Ultimately, it's  still an individual's choice.Always will be.

Find a game you enjoy, and dig into it. That's how you oppose games you don't like. No resentment or anguish involved.

Now that XIII is over, are you all ready for Final Hallway X HD? The corridors at least look slightly prettier this time around!

Can't say I'm surprised. XIII was a very divisive game and the sequel didn't help matters, so it was inevitable that this would continue the downward sales trend. It's a great game though. I can see why folks who care most about the story would hate it. The plot here is garbage. But the gameplay is the best the FF series has seen in recent memory. Great combat, tons of customization options, a huge world to explore, and the game provides an actual challenge. It's the best playing FF in years. Too bad so many people are content parroting reviews and will never give it a chance.

Good, this game deserves to do even worse. Got it day one, played it like 3 hours and couldn't bear it anymore. The story is so increbible stupid that it hurts me. If ypu want to play a good Final Fantasy, stay away from LR and get Braverly Default

Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

This game is a flop.  Bravely Default (a real Final Fantasy game) beat the pants off of it on metacritic, and FFX HD outsold it in Japan.  A decade old game outsells their flagship AAA franchise.

Thank god the FF13 nightmare is over.

Not going to lie, I have this, I'll play it, I'll complete it...... but I can't see myself into enjoying it. It looks terrible it's as if they put all the graphic power into lightning then thought everything else can look as if it's from a PS2. Like hope when he's talking just looks like a rubbish character model.

jasongm

Have never played any of the FF games since the PS2 days, is this a whole new FF 13 game or a spin off in which one of the elemental powers (Lighting duh) returns to the series?

Nice outfit <snicker>

Man, if this is what was in Square's head all along, I'm grateful my FF fandom was contained in an era where the tech couldn't render their 'vision' in its full glory.

Lol, Lego The Movie The Videogame at number 1. It did get good reviews for a movie-to-game adaptation and the movie itself is a commercial and critical success, but still a bit surprising. Not so surprising, but odd nonetheless, is that Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition is still in the top 10.

The pic of that outfit...almost looks like some freaky anime orgy is about to take place or something. Either that or she is really sadistic to make a suit of of those poor, silly looking critters (Moogs right?).

And now for something completely different, Squenix should make a Final Fantasy cereal with Moog marshmellows along the line of Lucky Charms. I wouldn't buy it, but I'm sure some would.

People still play this shit series? By the way FF15 is gonna disappoint as well, but the sheep will support FF15 1-3, saying that FF16 will be Square's last chance to save the series.

Will Nomura get the idea this time around? He just can't let FF XIII pass. We'll see how far away FF XV will distance itself from Lightning, but I'm sure there will be cameos and a legend behind her "deeds" in the formation of the new world. Ugh.

@NoOnesThere  Pretty sure LR sales are above 13-2. Don't think it will go past 13 sales though.

quicksilver_03

@ArchoNils2  And that's exactly what I did, but as an avid FF fan I will still buy it only "when it becomes cheaper". I am hoping that Bravely Default will get a PS Vita release.

Sunuva22
Sunuva22

@ArchoNils2 if you buy a game full price you better finish it! When you finish a game off even if it isn't all that good you will likely find some parts that you do like and are satisfied by. I found the beginning not so great later on I enjoyed it more. If you play on normal you are wasting your time and energy. It is a heck of a lot more fun on easy and you won't miss out on anything between the difficulties. Monsters are still hard on easy. All the quests are completable on easy too except for "the last one" that requires you to kill every monster because some monsters are in the final story quest area. That just means they want you to finish that quest in new game plus mode which has its own extra features to make you stronger.

Gamegeek123
Gamegeek123

@Thanatos2k  Yeah but Final Hallway X is also garbage. Whatever FF has been terrible since the legendary FFVI. Every FF afterwards is garbage, especially FFIX.

Thanatos2k

@jasongm It's a sequel to the sequel of FF13.  Yes, it's as bad as it sounds.

@pyro1245  Story is hard to follow most of the time but at least there is so much backstory to the characters that I understand why most of them are doing what they're doing. And to be completely honest this is by far the most addicting FF I have ever played and that is because the gameplay makes sense and is fun. The clock may be a negative thing for some people but I see it as a positive because it makes the entire world so much more believeable.

Here are some of things I think FF LR does that I wish other RPGs would do.

1. Finite number of monsters. Having a finite number of monsters for each species makes killing weaker enemies more satisfying because you know you are wiping out the trash and once you wipe out the last of its kind (which is a stronger version of it) you get great bonuses.

2. Clock that goes by minutes. If a game has a clock I prefer for there to be individual minutes, it makes the clock easier to understand and to rely on. Other games that have had clocks usually go by bigger chunks of time like 15 minutes at a time or hours. Nothing wrong with that but it makes it harder to figure out at a glance.

3. No copied NPCs. In LR, thanks to adornments, I haven't come across a single NPC that looks like another NPC. Yeah they may the same face model but the hair will be different or they'll have glasses, hats, ties, outfits, whatever. This adds to believeability in the world and makes cutscenes with NPCs have more weight than they normally would. I dunno if voices are changed since I play using the Japanese voices which you can download for free.

4. Outfits change in cutscenes. This is a good thing, self-explanatory.

5. Monsters attack NPCs too. Once again adds to believeability.

6. Failable quests. I found this out the hard way. I failed a quest and failed hard. This happened early in the game because I didn't know you could fail and I was rushing. Failable quests combined with a clock means success depends on you being able to be quick but also efficient.

I'll stop there but there is more stuff as well. Hope this helps people to know a bit more about the game. Definitely switch to Japanese voices,...lip synching matched to a tee.

Llama345
Llama345

@pyro1245  Yes. The clock isn't that big of deal. The story is the only bad part of the game Imo.

Dark_Mits

@dragonkantus4  Because if we don't express our hate, the developers will never hear that the playerbase didn't like their game, so they will continue in developing along the same path, therefore they will keep developing games that we don't like.

ArchoNils2
ArchoNils2

@Thanatos2k @ArchoNils2  Why? I buy new games all the time. In fact I'll get the new Dokey Kong tomorrow. If something looks interessting, I get it. I really wanted to like LR since I loved FFs until 11, but I think they get worse and worse yet still I know I'll get FF15 day 1 as well even though FF14 is amongst the worst games I ever played

ArchoNils2

@quicksilver_03  I doubt BR comes to Vita, but it was really a good game, it is almost worth buying a 3DS for it.

ArchoNils2
ArchoNils2

@Sunuva22 @ArchoNils2  I wasted to much time waiting for FF13 to get better and don't want to do that again. Oh and there are much better games on my backlog then this and so no, I don't get through it just because I got it day 1 xD

torbonator

@Thanatos2k @torbonator  If it says Final Fantasy on it I'll have it, even if it's just to put in my collection. And how was I meant to know it wasn't overly great without trying it? I've played 2 hours worth I'm not particularly enjoying it, I may enjoy later on... probably not.

Hurvl

@Dark_Mits @dragonkantus4That's the reason we like to believe, that we tell ourselves to get the other possible reasons out of our head. So why hate? Because we can, is my answer.

torbonator
torbonator

@Thanatos2k  I don't really play mobile games so no. I enjoyed some of XIII before pulse was meh but I like it after that, I really enjoyed XIII-2 it had the gameplay XIII should have but didn't have a story to hold up on. I don't always base my purchase my games based on reviews if I did I'd be buying the dire that is call of duty every year.

And yes I have Bravely Default, I'll be playing it once I've competed Zelda.

Obviously my opinion differs to yours but calling someone dumb and being offensive is just not a very way to conduct yourself through a debate. It actually just shows that you don't have much of an argument.

Have you actually played this game for a decent amount of time? I've played for 2 hours and I don't feel I have enough time to pass complete judgement but I have judged from what I have played so far. Which are the graphics are rubbish for an end of cycle PS3 game and thats generally it. I like the battle system it's new and different, the story doesn't seem too great but I haven't played enough yet.

Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

@torbonator @Thanatos2k Stop being dumb.  Did you get Final Fantasy All The Bravest too just because it had Final Fantasy in the name?

Get Bravely Default and stop buying garbage.

"And how was I meant to know it wasn't overly great without trying it?"

Reviews.  Stop buying things day one.  Also, you played FF13 and FF13-2 right?  Then you should have known exactly how bad it was going to be.
