Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII demo out now

Although PlayStation 3 version arriving in Europe tomorrow.

Square Enix has released a playable demo for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, which is now available on the Xbox Games Store.

Activating the game's Outerworld services and submitting a score in the Lightning Returns demo will give players access to the Siegfried outfit that can be used in the full game, Square Enix adds.

A PlayStation 3 version of the demo will be released on the PlayStation Store today in North America, with a release in Europe following tomorrow.

GameSpot's Kevin VanOrd recently posted his impressions after playing an early build of Lightning Returns. "Lightning Returns is chock full of prophecy talk, though I have yet to put all of its jumbled pieces together into a coherent whole," he wrote.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be released on February 11 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

I've actually noticed something quite funny about Final Fantasy.  The games with a lot of voice acting seem to be the worst ones in the series, whilst the ones with little to no voice acting e.g. A Realm Reborn and 1-9, are the best games in the series.  Maybe that should tell Square Enix something.

a third FFXIII? WTF play that?

Yeah, this demo was pretty "Meh!" for me.  Final Fantasy needs to move more towards a completely open world style if it wants to survive in today's gaming world.  FFXIV A Realm Reborn is awesome because of the open world setting.  One of the best JRPGs I've ever played actually.  Oh yeah, do away with the turn based battle system.  Its terribly dated and is absolutely crippling Final Fantasy at this point.

The whole social integration part of the demo is pretty wonky too.

Wow, I would be playing it but since my XBL Gold membership expired last week, I dont have the option to download it. Thanks Microsoft for letting me know that going over to Sony is going to be the right choice.

Maybe it was a terrible pick to have this part of the game for the demo, but it was pretty terrible. It's basically Lightning running through some unimaginative corridors chasing down Snow who turned bad (or did he?) and we get to fight some monsters on the way that basically do nothing. The battle system was OK. We get to see Lightning dress up in the most silly looking outfits to ever grace the world of Final Fantasy. The battle system was made to be more "active", but it's actually just an ATB battle where you have to spend "action points" to do moves and if you're out of points you pick a different role so you can do some more moves.

Lightning can now jump and climb stuff, well we could do that in FFXIII-2 as well and I should say as far as the demo goes it adds absolutely nothing to the gameplay.

SE is moving towards action gaming instead of turn-based gaming and in the execution lies a flaw as far as I can tell. It's not fast paced, nor exhilarating. It's close to boring. It's bad enough we went from two controllable characters in FFXIII-2 to actually only one in this game. And even though I do like Lightning she's not interesting enough to carry the game on her own.

Just thought everyone should know, the battle system in this game is no bueno. If you though it wasn't interactive before, now you literally press and hold a button. I guess that's technically more work than just pressing a button to line up your moves? Maybe? Either way "It all ends here." Thank christ, this 13 saga needed to end after 1 game.

Square, make an HD FF7. Then you have my permission to die.

Do you have to snapshot last battle score to get costume or post on Facebook?

Don't let the names fool you, most of the games are different stories set in similar universes. So you really only have like 3-4 games per story at max and a couple being solitary. Heck a few are even mmos.

As soon as I saw this, I went to go start downloading it! XD so pumped!!

I'll rephrase. "Nobody who likes RPG's". Not that this is one even.

Assuming there is a midnight release (I imagine there will be), I will be there!

I don't know what you're talking about. 13-2 is phenomenal and I, along with many others I know wait for this game with great anticipation. 13-2 has a great story and many features 13 lacked. Also, how many games have you played that are time restricted like this? Last one I recall playing was on the N64 (Majora's Mask). People like yourself need to learn to rephrase things. Just because 'you' don't look forward to it, doesn't mean 'nobody' looks forward to it.

Who cares? It's a matter of making (or even reusing existing wire-frames from other games) on a new engine and pasting textures. It's actually not that hard, or expensive and the new release would get them big bucks from fans of the older games. Square Enix has nearly as much money as EA. That's not even an argument. I don't think you understand how games are made Rap.

FFXIII was probably the easiest Final Fantasy game, and even the easiest RPG game ever made. Don't know how someone could think a game that pretty much plays itself is hard.

Let me put it this way- do you like pizza? What if I took away the pepperoni and red sauce and replaced it with m&M's and watermelon... is it still pizza? No...

@jlenoconel"Oh yeah, do away with the turn based battle system." It is doing that. XIII-3 features a real time action battle system

chano880

@jlenoconel The game is supposedly open world and you are pretty much free to do whatever you want within the time limit (to some extent I presume).

I actually enjoyed the demo and I thought it more as a tutorial than anything else, I expect the final release to be better. However, I'll be waiting for some reviews before deciding anything.

@TechSinwhen Hope said: You have to use the ladder to be able to follow Snow! I was like what were they thinking? lol

Hope: Use your legs to run, Lightning! lol

@TechSin"even though I do like Lightning she's not interesting enough to carry the game on her own." - Or 3 games for that matter.....well, lets see what Ubisoft can come up with since they're apparently being passed the torch.

@Garnog Play A Realm Reborn.  That's the direction Final Fantasy needs to go, gameplay wise.

i`m with you Joshua I played 13 and 13-2 and beat them both along with nearly ever ff game but 3 and 11. these games are pretty amazing especially the story to them. to bad people are getting away from story parts of game they are so busy looking for amazing game the story is forgotten.

Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth was and everybody hated that part of the game.

Uh no. That's not at all how it works. Unless you want literally the shittiest looking game ever. It's highly unlikely Square even still keeps the resources used to make FF7. They would have to literally rebuild the entire game from the ground up even if they did - FF7 was made with pre-rendered environments just like RE1, 2, 3, silent hill, fatal frame, and many other games.

jlenoconel

@chano880 @jlenoconel I had heard that this game was open world, but this demo didn't feel like it for me.  The controls still feel kinda clunky like the first XIII I played (haven't finished XIII or even played XIII-2).  Lightening Returns feels too much like the rest of the XIII series for me, and should have been more about distancing itself from those games really.

resident_jisen
resident_jisen

@jlenoconel@Garnog a realm reborn was ok for an ff game I quit playing it 4 month it cause it got boring story wise and the other player in there( with the exception of a few I made friends of)are idiots

resident_jisen
resident_jisen

@jlenoconel I played 13 and 13-2 one of the best of the FF games I can say next to 7 and 10 and 10-2. I find open world games are not always the best games take skyrim  for example worest open world game I ever played. and yet games with a blend of open and linear play really rule.
