LGF: Britons kick around Pro Evo 6

UK gamers and footballer Bobby Zamora get to grips with the Xbox 360 version of Pro Evolution Soccer 6 for the first time.

by

LONDON--As part of the London Games Festival, UK gamers got a sneak preview and the chance to play the hotly anticipated Pro Evolution Soccer 6--known as Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007 in the US--for the Xbox 360 at HMV's Oxford Street store this week. A small crowd of gamers had gathered at the flagship location to play the game in a tournament, many of them hardcore PES fans.

West Ham's Bobby Zamora showing off his ball skills at the event.

"The only game I play is PES," said Sam Martin, a 30-year-old student. "It's the best football series ever," said 18-year-old Matthew Van Den Elst. "I've owned every version and I bought an Xbox 360 for this game," John Evans, a 31-year-old sales manager, told us.

All the boys (and yes, they were all boys) who had a chance to play the game were pleased with it. "The ball doesn't stick to the feet in this version. I'm definitely going to buy it," said Asim Tanvir, a 22-year-old student. "It was a bit slower than the last version," said Evans. "But the graphics were superb." Hallet was also impressed by the look and feel of the game: "It looks really good and it's great to see that they have all the licensed kits now," he explained.

However, the gamers all expressed a general lack of interest in other London Games Festival events. "I only heard that the festival was going on from GameSpot," said Tanvir. "I was thinking about going to the careers fair as well, but in the end I didn’t have time." Evans added: "I know about it but I'm not interested in any of the other events." Van Den Elst added: "I didn't know that this week was the London Games Festival. I might have gone to other events if I'd known about them."

Footballer Bobby Zamora, who plays for East London Premiership side West Ham, was at HMV to test out the game too. Surrounded by a crowd of press and fans, Zamora seemed to be enjoying the game.

Zamora told GameSpot that he was an avid gamer off the pitch too, and his favourite game was Tiger Woods 07, and of course the Pro Evolution Soccer series.

Pro Evolution Soccer 6 will be released in the UK on 27 October.

i can tell you all that i've played EVO 6 and its absolutey brilliant, and it was only the PS2 version and JAP (winning eleven 10) and i know the tweak them even further when we get hold of it in the UK and turn it to ro Evolution Soccer. People who have played 5 need to know that almost everything has been made better, and its the little things that grab you, like the fact that if your keep catches the ball while falling back into the net he no longer lands magically on the line he has to throw it back out and falls into the net then scrambles back up! Or sometimes if your playing with a s**t keeper he can fall into the net with the ball thus scoring an own goal (doesn't happen that often tho). This is the same at the edge of the 18 yrd line to he can sometime give hand ball. Another tweak is the ref he no longer gives a free kick for stepping on someones toe! he lets the game go on which makes the game much more fluid, animations are better, ball control, theres a new trick to master which is the drag and knock wherby your player pulls the ball back and then pushes it to the side diagonally taking on the opposing player (looks class if you do it just as the player goes in with his boot, done it a few times to mates! As for liscencing theres a few new additions but i dont really care about correct player names n teams, they're almost right, i prefer better gameplay! If any1 needs to know anything gimme a shout. Or wait till friday 27th. I cant wait. By the way played FIFA 07 on my 360 and guess what. . . . . . . . ITS SH*T!!!

PhantasmCipherX Fifa 07 is shaping up to be better than Winning Eleven. Not only are the graphics better in Fifa, there are more hours of gameplay, a deeper franchise, bigger online mode, full liscense, realistic stats and stat tracking, superb ball physics, better animation, and not to mention smooth framerates and virtually no loading times. Fifa 07 for 360 is gonna f*cking rock. I didn't care much for the older Fifa's but this one is shaping up good... Notice how nowhere htere does it say anything about superior gameplay? Enough said Russ

I must say that I will for one be glad that PES is slowing down. Hopefully they can capture the slow build up, almost walking pace, that you get at certain stages of a game - the transition from attack to defense was virtually zero due to the lack of movement off the ball and the passing system. Also, to me it seemed that it was nearly impossible to really zip the ball around your players at short distance then burst into the area a la Arsenal. I'm not saying that passing should be just hitting the button and making ridiculously outrageous moves that have no consideration for realism (fifa); the passing system was intrinsically flawed in PES5 and I for one hope they have made some improvements. I have played almost all of the Fifa titles. I was originally a fifa boy back in the day when 'Fifa International Soccer' was released but it all went wrong around Fifa 2000 time. I'm not going to spent £50 each time EA wants to rehash an underdeveloped tite into this year's cash cow. Pro Evo is the better game - you can't deny that! You may prefer Fifa, but PES is by far the more realistic, authentic football sim, even the journos think so! Oh and nsoufiani, while you are entitled to your opinion I thought your words ignorant to say the least. One more thing I can't believe they actually have word censors on this site, I disagree with that.

Why does it take so long for this game to arrive in the US? Can I import it and play it on my US Xbox 360? Because I don't see the point in waiting five months for apparently no reason at all...

"Brits /need/ FIFA & Pro Evo considering interest in other sports titles are minimal at best. Quite frankly apart from GTA every other 2 years barely anything else apart from budget or BOGOF titles sell enough quantity to make it worth while for a store to take a chance on stocking any other releases. The only two PS2 games that sold any real numbers this year have been FIFA & Lego Star Wars. Therefore if it wasn't for the majority of Brits buying (crap) film tie-in's and the latest EA muck then there wouldn't even be other stock to buy. That is unless you want everything to go the way of Steam (which wouldn't be such a bad thing in terms of prices)" What a load of crap! Re-arange these words.........ass, up, head, your.

Us "Brits" play games like pro evo or fifa just as much as americans play madden or nba etc. It is exactly the same where ever you come from, GTA sells, MGS sells, Halo sells, Call of Duty............ the list continues. The only people that generally buy "crap" movie tie-ins are kids who don't know much better (which is in some cases, the majority). I would be guessing by saying that this is the same in most other countries. Your ignorance rains supreme.

right, just to clear things up, the GTA games were ALL made in Britain. Thats right. Rockstar North is based in Scotland, and Rockstar Leeds are from (duh) Leeds. So dont come and tell us we have no taste in games. The biggest game franchise EVER belongs in Britain.

Bear-Max what have sales figures got to do with it? And besides, the guy said that PES is the only series he plays- meaning that he has probobly played the odd fifa game (because EVERYONE has played a fifa game in their time) and found that it is indeed a lesser game to the more recent Pro Evolution Soccer Games. You say we are the people destroying the game industry? You are basing this on the comment of 'one single fan'- ur a bit of an idiot and I can tell you american even from that statement. Maybe the 'real' thing destroying the game industry are the stupid 'american' politicians trying to ban games like GTA and Bully because they 'recon' they are at fault for gun crime, clean up your own mess and stop passing the blams. Sorry that went massivly off topic! Anyway, according to people who have the new Fifa game its not 'that great' and reviewers are tauting PES to win the war.

I wish people in the UK were more in tune with their games" While I agree saying that PES is the only game you play in the same breath as saying it's the best football franchise is completely stupid - I mean... how can you know if you only play one game? - your comment is equally as ridiculous. Just because a game is popular, it is by no means killing the industry. I wish you were more in tune with sales figures.

Looking good, the reason we love football games is because we love football so much,. We feature the best football league in the world and every team as dedicated fans, thats why they sell so well. I disagree with nsoufiani, just because we don't buy games like Final Fantasy or some other fantasy type game all the time doesn't mean we don't know good games. As for authenticity in this game, well there will probably be a superpatch released again sometime next year which will be brilliant, I use the Superpatch now and it gives teams real tops and real names... basically makes the game equal with FIFA over authenticity but as way better gameplay.

"I wish people in the UK were more in tune with their games" WHat a ridiculous statement - The U.S.A love their Madden while the Japanese love their RPG's. Just because a territory has a certain selling point, doesn't mean other games get overlooked. You will find some of the biggest games ever sold in the UK (and Europe) are still the same big games that get sold elsewhere in other territories such as MGS, Halo and GTA. Why? Because they are great games that's why. Now please rest your head of ignorance before it explodes.

I cannot freaking wait. This is literally the best sports title out there. The way Konami was able to mimic all the small tendencies and trademarks of football is all in the game. Going into each match, you don't know what to expect because anything can happen. That's thanks to the beauty of the ball physics in this game. I really like the controls, because they're extremely intuitive, but allow for a huge variety of different moves. The animations are critical in achieving that random feel to the game. It seems like there are new animations popping up here and there, and that all helps create that immersion. This game can get me jumping out of my chair if the situation is intense. Scoring on a free kick to advance in a tournament in injury time is absolutely thrilling. This is probably the only game that can get me as excited as watching an actual live match. Can't wait for PES6
