Lenovo-powered game console slated for December release

iSec game console to launch in China at end of 2011 for $470; full-scale release set for "early next year."

Gamers in China have it tough when it comes to devices like the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, with foreign game consoles not allowed to be sold there. The consoles, however, are widely available in the country's parallel import market. Chinese computer company Lenovo and Beijing eedoo Technology are hoping to break into this market and have collaborated to create the iSec game console. The two companies will be releasing the system on a trial run this December and will sell for 3,000 yuan ($470). A full-scale launch is planned for "early 2012."

The iSec will be available in China this December, if things go smoothly.

The console features motion-sensing technology not unlike Microsoft's Kinect device, as well as home entertainment device options like karaoke mode. According to a spokesperson from Lenovo (via CNbeta and Penn-Olsen), the console will come in red, white, and black. The companies have 130 people in the iSec development team. The software lineup for the system has yet to be determined.

Jack Luo, eedoo CEO, said that the company will focus on the Chinese market first, with plans to release it outside of the country if it manages to sell 1 million units. The system has yet to gain approval from the China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Back in 2009, the system went under the moniker "eBox" before Lenovo renamed it.

This will probably only sell well in China, since the other consoles aren't sold in that country. Still, chinese gamers still import Wii's PS3 and XBox 360 from Japan into their country. China is mostly Pc gaming however, so it'll be interesting to see how many of these are sold withing the first month. I'd say maybe 50K if they are lucky. What game company is going to support it?

I really hope it goes well for them (: it would give Chinese people some form of income rather than having to work for Aristocratic factories for minimun wage :s I at least hope this is an honest Chinese company.

it would be nice to think of it as Sega Dreamcast 2

Why is everyone dissing this before even seeing what it can do? It may not be as good as an Xbox or PS3, but hey, what else is China gonna do to get console gaming?

Hmmm. The current game market in China is all PC...in fact, it's basically just DOTA. It'll be interesting to see if this gets off the ground.

The Specs on this should be better than both the PS3 and 360. Not sure about the Wii U.

it would of been nice if Lenovo released some screen shots of games so we can see what to expect from them. but hey why not give them the shot, after all Sony did the same thing.

@berzerk0912 a lot of the stuff we buy is made from china, teh X-box 360 controller, PS3 Controller, and a lot of the hard ware we use in PC's motherboard, mouses, are made from China. so whats the problem?

A new console? Lenovo has entered the videogame hardware market? In China. iSec $470 for this new videogame console? 1 Billion people or so live in China. Since their is almost no competition in China. Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, Apple, Android. or PC. How many of those 1 Billion people in China can afford to buy a $470.00 Videogame console? Lenovo has to expand outside of China in order to make a go of this iSec videogame machine. NEC, Panasonic, SNK, Atari, Sega, Mattel, Philips, Commadore, Coleco, Nokia etc. Even Apple itself with the "Apple Pippen" there are many examples of how difficult the videogame industry. Home videogame consoles/portable videogame handhelds which are technically computers. So Lenovo is a computer hardware maker laptops and traditional desktop computers. But the "Softs" (software) is more important then the videogame machine/device they are played on. I wish Lenovo well I hope that this new iSec videogame console is a success. Will the iSec eventually be available in the United States of America and other regions PAL etc? or will Lenovo join the others in the Videogame industry "graveyard of Could've been consoles" Good luck Lenovo your going to need it.

Lenovo isn't a joke; they own IBM's PC division, and are the world's 2nd largest PC maker. Just sayin'...

Is this like the "Vii" we heard about awhile back when the Wii first came out? If those even do make it out of China, count me out. I'll stick with the Big 3 we know and love.

This is good news for the Chinese, but if they manage to sell 1 million console and start selling them here in America, it better be more then a re-skinned Xbox, Wii, or PS3.

This console's gonna dry up without any launch titles. It might prove to have some success in other countries, though.

Ummm, lenovo better have some big plans for this thing, because he way it's looking, it's gonna fail. Cool idea though, but sony and ms have them beat, and nintendo should just give up, they're done for practically. I will admit, iSec is better than WiiU~PU(~=similar, about, etc)

Jeez the gaming industry in America would be messed up if we couldn't import systems from other countries..... We'd be stuck with the Atari 99900000 or something? and the XBOX 360 bot probably not even that because it's manufactured in Mexico lol *I know I'm probably way off but it still makes you think......

"The console features motion-sensing technology not unlike Microsoft's Kinect device" 0_o Emm... maybe, but making such comparison , I'm not a fan of Xbox360 but that's just funny how they put it in the post. Isec... more like 1sec of working time)

They don't sell consoles there because of rampant piracy. You don't have to look hard to find copies of games in stores for the equivalent of $1-5 US. Will there really be a market in China for this thing? Who will develop software for a console where most of the players will just steal your work?

GamerLegend10
GamerLegend10

@Infinity_Gauntl i think you would be better off just sticking with current consoles and forgetting this one...this is basically just a rip-off of x360 & ps3 anyway, i expect they have stolen the at-least the motion control technology. Besides no-one is forcing you to buy it.

GamerLegend10
GamerLegend10

sigh its sad that foreign consoles are not allowed to be sold there...but not surprising with a stupid over-controlling government which cares little about its people. Revolution is needed in China. End of short rant. lol

Judging by the masterpiece that is this article, the iSec is just an empty shell. How could they not even mention some basic specs for this console? This is reporting at it's best.

Infinity_Gauntl

Really really dumb. Thats all I need is 4 consoles. I dont even really want 3. I wish nintendo would become a game/peripheral maker and we would only have 2 consoles.
