Layoffs at IGN

In addition to editorial layoffs, 1UP, UGO, and Gamespy expected to shut down.

by

Less than a month after Ziff Davis parent company J2 Global purchased IGN from News Corp., the company is seeing layoffs. A company spokesperson confirmed with Joystiq today that in addition to editorial layoffs at IGN, sites including 1UP, UGO, and Gamespy will be closed.

"We are focusing on our two flagship brands, IGN and AskMen," the company said. "Unfortunately, as a result, we have made the decision to close sites and restructure our teams accordingly."

Terms of J2 Global's acquisition of IGN this month were not specified, though a prior report suggested J2 Global scored a deal on the gaming unit, paying "considerably" less than the $650 million News Corp. purchased the company for in 2005.

Gamespy was vermin. They always placed spyware on your pc. Good Riddance. Sad about 1Up, but it hasn't been good since the James Mielke, Sam Kennedy days. Shit happens. Hopefully, some of those dudes come to Gamespot.

gamespy was one of hte worst things ever.  besides a very terrible website, they had horrendous online capabilities for gaems that supported gamespy

in fact, i wonder why gamespy didnt die out earlier.  it sholdve closed in 2007 for its poor webiste and horrible game servers.  bye gamespy, i wonder how you existed 6 years after 2007 while delivering shoddy service

Gamespy is pretty old school. Before XBL I remember being able to use Gamespy to connect my original Xbox to my computer and play Halo 1 online. Christ, it was so long ago I'm starting to wonder if it even was Gamespy. LOL, SO MUCH HAS CHANGED! Either way, they have our respect.

Damn, I've really enjoyed reading Gamespy, it's even better than this site because of the PC focus. While the PC news here are good, it's mostly other stuff. Especially the PC reviews often get postponed, while the console reviews get posted the same day as the game's release in many cases. Guess I'll spend more time here then or something. Another one bites the dust.

And nothing of value was lost or will be lost.

They killed off Colin Moriarty; it was a sad day indeed. Though IGN hasn't been how it used to be in a long time, this still breaks my heart.

I get worried when reading articles like this. First, it was Nintendo Power and GamePro. Now it's 1up, gamespy, and UGO. I hope we don't lose any more videogame media companies. I realize many people are happy to see these companies go but I like having multiple sources for differing views and opinions.

I am truly disgusted by majority of the comments I see. these are real people who lost their jobs.. show a little respect.

Lay off Ryan Clements but Colin Moriarty still has a job? What the hell is wrong with IGN?

@IllegallyAwesum Colin was laid off?! i thought it was just Ryan Clemants. I need Colin. He was the only thing that kept the Beyond podcast listenable at times. I can't suffer through just Andrew and Greg. >_<

@SDBusDriver1979 Colin on a bad day is still more informed and entertaining than anyone presently working on the entire Gamespot staff. So i have no clue what you are babbling about.

@SDBusDriver1979 Ryan Clements wrote some very racist articles in the past years. I would fire him for that (and the guy that authorized those to be published).

ps. I would fire Eddie Makuch as well. He makes a lot of mistakes. He is not a good journalist and that affects the credibility of Gamespot.

@Suikogaiden @Rev8691 Respect is something offered when it can be afforded - it is not required. It simply makes you a more considerate person for affording it.

Go ahead and hate if you like but if you do get hit by a train, don't be surprised if people are less interested in that event than an otherwise respectable person losing their job.

@bongsyas_23 @firehawk998 what does that have to do with his opinion? The color of my skin is brown, so does that exempt  me from giving terrible reviews?? c'mon man...

I just got laid off last week so no, ever hear of empathy?

@bledsoe45sbc I sincerely doubt that... if you get hit by a train you die. This is cease to function. No longer living? no longer breathing? You can't pout. you can't laugh. you can't love. you can't look for another job...

that and there would be nothing left of your body had it been blindsided with a train.

A person loses their job... its time to move on and find another. Unfortunately this is the way of life.

@Suikogaiden @LeviHarris Don't need a lesson in business, but I completely agree with your second point. Still, the figurehead is just that, the figurehead.

@Suikogaiden @bamer640 Yes, because a company that just dropped $650 million dollars is hurting in the financial department. It's called corporate greed, not Obamanomics.

@firehawk998 Dude, I'm so ready for a TRUE "survival horror" game... I can't wait for The Last of US...

@Hellhound30x @firehawk998  Amen to that man . I love that the Last of Us gameplay ( in video previews ) emphasizes on survival and not blasting your way though.  :)

@firehawk998 totally agreed about Uncharted 2. I'm wondering if "The Last of US." will come close... because man U2 is one of, if not the best game made this generation... my opinion and all... lol!

@Hellhound30x    Good Post man!! Agreed about  UC2 which was to me was a once in a lifetime type of game that even its sequels cant match.. Good post though while reviews means different thing to different people Millers reviews just comes as Fan boyish drivel to me I cant take the review seriously anymore. Look I dont hate the man I think he is good when he is hosting stuff like Up at Noon but I dont think he should not do any reviews.

Hellhound30x
Hellhound30x

@firehawk998 Well its kinda of tough to do reviews, because yeah in the end its an opinion, but we all don't share the same opinion. Two different opinions can be derived from the same set of facts.

I played DMC, and thought it was such a great game, and am genuinely bewildered by people who absolutely hate it.

In the end there are two different types of reviewers.

one. those that look at a game as a work of art, and two. those who look at it like its a product.

If you only pay attention to it as a product, you tend to lose the magic of the game. If you look at it as solely art, then you kinda lose touch with everyone else... because again art is in the eye of the beholder.

There are times when I can see myself in both. As a DMC fan I originally thought the new DMC was a spit in the face to fans, but after playing it for 60 solid hours, I've come away with respect for a well built product, dare I say it? " A work of art?"

Also its hard not to be a fanboy of the Uncharted games... Uncharted 2 is a master piece.

firehawk998
firehawk998

@xkevin2jx @Hellhound30x Look while Reviews are basically opinions when you are doing reviews for a gaming website like GS or IGN there are professional ways one should write said reviews. For example What one likes in a videogame, hate, etc. Greg Millers SONY Videogame reviews are a bull blown PR love letter. See his Uncharted 3 reviews or anything SONY related. Even he himself admitted to being a SONY fanboy.  There are people here that do not like his reviews so much so that currently he doesnt even do reviews and instead host a show on IGN.

@firehawk998 @bongsyas_23 While it's good he survived cancer.  Why does that exempt him from giving reviews that aren't good?  Of course what is considered a good review is up for debate.  If someone sucks at their, whether they are healthy or have some disease is irrelevant.
