"What is the thing doing here?"

lIt's taken 20 years, but Independence Day: Resurgence finally hits cinemas next week. The sequel to the '90s sci-fi blockbuster will see the Earth once more take on alien invaders, and a couple of new clips have been released. Check them out below:

Resurgence sees Roland Emmerich in the director's chair once again, with Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, and Bill Pulman also returning. It co-stars Maika Monroe, Liam Hemsworth, William Fichtner, and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

In a recent interview with Empire, Emmerich revealed that his original plans for the movie were to take the plot in a slightly less action-packed direction. "It was after 9/11 and Dean [Devlin, screenwriter] and I wanted to make the movie about peace, and it just didn't work," he revealed. "There's still an element of that in the new one, but that version was only about that. We shoot aliens down accidentally and then at the end of the movie they land on the White House lawn and say "we come in peace" and that was it.

"It was just too weak an idea and we didn't really want to do it. It didn't have an Independence Day feel. Only the alien ship was destroyed!"

Independence Day: Resurgence hits theaters on June 24, 2016.
