Last of Us single-player DLC will feature "extremely challenging fights"

Naughty Dog provides new details on upcoming expansion for acclaimed PS3 game.

Left Behind--the upcoming single-player expansion for acclaimed PlayStation 3 action game The Last of Us--will feature some "extremely challenging fights," developer Naughty Dog said today. Developers explain in a new PlayStation Blog video that while the Left Behind DLC will place a stronger emphasis on exploration and non-combat experiences, the combat you will encounter will be seriously tough.

"You'll have some extremely challenging fights. In fact, some of those fights will be showcasing some new features that we've added to the combat," lead game designer Jacob Minkoff said.

One of the new combat features, "multi-faction combat," will allow protagonists Ellie and Riley to pit human enemies against the infected. You can do this without ever getting immediately involved through actions like throwing a bottle near a human to encourage a Clicker to attack the human.

Minkoff also said that Left Behind will match up well and even exceed, at least from a narrative standpoint, the main Last of Us campaign.

"With Left Behind, we wanted to make a single-player DLC that was as fully crafted as our main campaign," he said. "There's a great deal that we've done with the DLC that exceeds the level of narrative density that we had in the main campaign."

The expansion will also feel "playful" compared to the main game, Naughty Dog said earlier this month. It is set before the events of The Last of Us and will introduce players to the "real" Ellie and focus on her interactions with her friend Riley.

Left Behind, which represents the first single-player DLC Naughty Dog has ever created for any game, launches on February 14--Valentine's Day. It is included with the $20 The Last of Us DLC season pass and can purchased separately. The Last of Us was one of the few titles Sony demonstrated this month during CES 2014 running on the company's new PlayStation Now streaming service, which goes into beta later this month.

Just remember that Ellie never fires a gun until Joel gives her one, she has never seen a Bloater or Clicker until she's with Joel, and has never killed a human until she's with him.

So that's a lot of limitations on this prequel already... What is she going to be using, her knife? She won't be fighting humans, clickers, stalkers or bloaters, so the only enemy she can face is runners.

Unless Naughty Dog are doing some major retcon, or it's going to end with her waking up from a nightmare and saying "oh it was all just a dream", I think the combat will suck.

School girls fight extremely...

Game was terribly easy even on the hardest difficulty, not to mention there's hardly any way you can introduce a form of proper difficulty in a game with such mediocre gameplay. Heck, they might as well make it pure stealth/exploration and save us from generic cover-shooting and waves of enemies like those in Uncharted.

Ellie is so damn cute in that black and white picture. Cute in a small puppy kind of way, not the creepy way.

the Single player DLC will feature getting "playful" with 2 teenage girls.

I'm just hoping we get more combat options. Playing as ellie was cool but always getting choked by default by the hunters got annoying after a while. Punch me in the face dammit!

Am I the only one a little concerned that this messes with Ellie's character a bit?

[POTENTIAL SPOILER]

IIRC, TLOS seems to make out that the first time Ellie kills a person in the game is the first time she's ever done it, which doesn't seem to fit with this prequel. Perhaps my memory is at fault.

I bet it will be artificial difficulty.

Does that mean they're going to make the controls worse?

Cool, so you can avoid combat completely.  I always thought the gameplay got in the way of the cut scenes.

I don't mind if it's challenging so long as it is somewhat strategic or something and not just over the top and full of enemies, though The Last of Us managed to do fine with both of these things so I probably shouldn't be worried. I'm way more interested in the narrative anyway, but since I pretty much already know how the story is going to end, I'm not sure if it will be as impacting as the core game. Nevertheless, I still look very much forward to playing this. This is one of the rare occasions I'm actually going to spend $15 on a DLC.

Every other game company should pay attention and take notes from Naughty Dog, because they actually make DLC the right way. Instead of chopping out content of the finished game and passing it off as BS "DLC", which is exactly what everyone else usually does, ND actually plans and makes Downloadable Content AFTER the main game is finished!

This is the first time I've actually been looking forward to DLC since...since ever.

So basically your gonna have to mash the "Square Button" faster.

This is again another really positive sign for Naughty Dog. Some developers tend to water future content down because people found it too difficult. I'm glad they're making it even harder because the challenge of the vanilla game was something that appealed to me. Its most effective when you feel you're in danger. Also, hopefully this'll stop the whining about Ellie not being playable from the start.

Sony ready to release an amazing DLC for a goty title on a system that was released 7 years ago. MS abandoned and forgot 360's existence since 2012. This is how it goes these days.

@lostn hmm, i think she fired a gun before, she was in Military school after all. Joel just refused to give her one. You're right about the rest though, and i really hope ND don't mess up and make loads of inconsistencies.

Licurgo
Licurgo

@lostn Maybe you'll play as her friend for most of the game (I'm not sure if they said you play as Ellie) and there are parts where they get separated. I also hope they don't come out with some ridiculous excuse for inconsistencies (or have inconsistencies).

DiamondDM13

@Bellum_SacrumIt's true that the game is terribly easy, but it's also true that the gameplay is excellent. It's because the gameplay is excellent that it is easy to play on Survivor if you already know how to play.

forcefactor13

@majere613 Crap, I didn't even think of that. You're totally right, though; that time in the campaign was portrayed as her first time killing someone. I hope they don't ruin the poignancy of that scene by making her lethal in this DLC. Who knows though, maybe they're calling the  DLC fights really challenging because Ellie doesn't have the abilities she had when you played as her in the campaign, like stabbing or even shooting. Just a conjecture, but it would put an interesting spin on the combat if she couldn't do anything immediately lethal.

Simulator_Shock
Simulator_Shock

@majere613 Who's to say you play as Ellie in this? Maybe you play as her friend and Ellie tags along like she did in the main game?

Edit: Nevermind, just looked it up and you do in fact play as Ellie in this...

@pyro1245What problems did you have with the controls? I did not find the control scheme to be a problem or bad layout. Or did you just not have the control of your character you wanted?

Firaxis5050

@GreenvaleXYZIt is possible to complete the entire hospital sequence without firing a single shot. You essentially have to avoid or sneak through 90% of the combat when playing on Survivor.

@GreenvaleXYZ it called being stealthy its happens in some Stealth games you know sometimes you want to play a game more then one way

robertcain

@GreenvaleXYZ It's called careful and thoughtful stealth; in The Last of Us you've got to manage your supplies wisely, especially on higher difficulties where if you use too many items then you may not have enough to survive the next encounter. Not all games need to be full on action-based combat you know.

robertcain

@Simulator_Shock Well technically this is Naughty Dog's first ever single-player DLC; before they released map packs for Uncharted. I'll get back to you once I've played it through and have proof for your statement.

@Ciscowonder80I hope that was sarcasm because bailing on any "romantic" Valentine's Day plan is a bad idea no matter how big a fan of video games she is. Unless she gets the DLC as a romantic present for you then you might be able to avoid a nice dinner.

Yep. Same story for ps2 vs original xbox. Microsoft makes good exclusives, but abandons their old console for a new one increadibly fast.

@silversix_ true. and nintendo forgot about the wii less than 5 years after it launched. sony is the only company you can depend on for a 10 year lifespan of game releases. they followed the same logic with the ps2.

@shingui5@lostn Unlikely. Joel had to teach her how to use the gun... Being in a military base doesn't mean they teach the kids how to use weapons.

She definitely will not have access to things like a Rifle, sand explosives, proximity mines and other makeshift items Joel had. In the Winter chapter she couldn't craft anything (iirc, at the very least she couldn't craft explosives or shivs).

@Vinnvn@DiverseGamerCute in a sexually attractive way. Creepy in that sexual interest in pubescent children is inappropriate. Riley looks about 14 and Ellie looks about 11 in the article photo. So cute like a puppy.

@Fastnova00007 @pyro1245 lol People seem to just like to bash on TLOU now cause it was a popular game. Since it's popular, it's cool to bash on it. :O /highfive I agree, never had a problem with the controls. Quite enjoyed them actually and pulled off some amazing kills.

@Simulator_Shock @SoNin360 The Left Behind DLC alone is $15, the Season Pass that this DLC is included on (along with two multiplayer DLCs and a behind-the-scenes documentary) is $20.

@Xristophoros@silversix_ The last couple of Wii game releases ended officially in late 2013 and last time I checked, The Wii U was backwards compatible which is pretty dependable if you want to play older games you already own.

Pretty much every game from Q4 2014 and on (unless they announce otherwise) will be watered down PS3 ports of PS4 games going along with actual Next Gen games like Phantom Pain and Uncharted 4.  That's how it was for PS2 when PS3 came out.  You act like there was a significant amount of PS2-only exclusives after the PS3's release. Devil Summoner 2 was probably the last original PS2-Only game for the PS2 in NA.

Last PS2 game was in Late 2013 as well which is an incredible haul for such an old console, but there really wasn't a "must-play" game on it after the PS3s release and it will most likely be the same for the PS3 after a year or two of the PS4s lifespan.

I agree that MS doesn't have anything planned for 360 anymore and its nice that there will be some PS3-only exclusives for a little more time especially in Japan.  You have to admit the irony in not making PS4 backwards compatible

Xristophoros

@PosiTVEMinD355 @silversix_ god of war 2, persona 3 and persona 4 came out AFTER the ps3 launched. those are among the very best games on ps2 and were exclusives. what good game came out for the wii over the past 2 years? i've never seen a system die to fast! i'm not even talking about first party titles. even third party publishers avoided the wii as fast as they could. the same will not happen with the ps3. sure, all of sony's first party studios have transitioned to the ps4, but there will be great third party support on the ps3 for another two years at the very least. why would publishers abandon a platform that has 80 million users and is still relevant graphically? the wii on the other hand was a relic the day it came out and is part of the reason it sank as fast as it did. also, have you already forget that persona 5 is coming to ps3 late this year/early 2015? ps2 and ps3 speak for themselves with regards to longevity. i don't need to defend this any further.
