Last Guardian loses executive producer

Following Fumito Ueda departure, Team Ico's Yoshifusa Hayama resigns to take on creative director role at casual developer Bossa Studios.

Team Ico's The Last Guardian has been a long time coming, having first been teased back in 2005. Development on the PlayStation 3 project appears to be winding down, and in kind, Team Ico seems to be shedding some of its top talent.

Never fear, The Last Guardian remains ever vigilant within Team Ico's walls.

Last week, word emerged that studio head Fumito Ueda had exited the company, and now executive producer Yoshifusa Hayama is also out. London-based social game maker Bossa Studios announced today that it has snapped up Hayama, naming him creative director at the studio.

Sony had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment on Hayama's departure as of press time. However, Bossa did confirm Hayama's hire, and his profile has been added to the employee roll call on the studio's official website, bearing the title creative director.

Hayama will lead Bossa's efforts to create the studio's first 3D social game. In September, Bossa released its first project, Monstermind, through Facebook. According to the company, the game currently has 380,000 unique monthly users.

As for The Last Guardian, Sony's ambitious action adventure game currently bears no release date. It had previously been scheduled to arrive for the PS3 this holiday season. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Getting mad, confused and crazy. Can't imagine "The Last Guardian" without Fumito Ueda or even Team ICO without him. it's awful. Feeling sick.

The Last Guardian is by far my most anticipated game and will be until it comes out. There are no doubts about whether the game will be released, but my main concern is that the title 'The Last Guardian' may be prophetic: The fact that we may see no more Team Ico games breaks my heart to no end....

Although I'm a little worry. I do believe the folks at Team Ico are talented enough to create a great finished product, despite these recent departures.

The people who have been waiting years for this game deserve better than this.

Sounds like something weird is going on with Team Ico. I don't even like Sony but I was excited for this game. It looked like something that would change people's perception about video games. A real push forward in the medium. ...but it's still not done? People are leaving the development team and there isn't even a release date? If I were to guess, sounds more like personalty conflicts or clashes of opinion are causing slowdowns in the development. I hope they can hold it together to get it released because a game that looked THIS good 6 years ago, should have been released a long time ago. :(

Ahh well that sure sucks. Especially with him now moving to make 3D social games for Facebook.. What the hell? Hopefully it will still be a cracking game when it does eventually release, from what gameplay we have seen it looked okay :) I've been hyped for this ever since it was announced, admittedly though it is now starting to look a little dated :(

Two THOUSAND years later... and now this? Hell, I'd completely forgot about the game until I actually just seen the dragon in the video. It looks too far outdated now, they might as well scrap it and start the heck over.

I hope this won't impact the quality of TLG. I can understand the incredible pressure these wonderfully talented people been having. Expectations are very high for TLG, being the follow-up to 2 of the most artistically-praised game ever.

It would be my dream come true to be in a position that I work for Team Ico. If I had to choose a company to work for, it would not be Nintendo or Blizzard. But Team Ico. I dearly hope that Team Ico does not disipate. They made one of the most unique games yet to me. Shadow of the Colossus. I may have a feeling that the reason why things are going down is because they need more time to make the game and Sony is loosing its pacience? I dont know. They should aim to have the product done so they can make a new game all together.

I bet sony wanted them to take on some competitive multiplayer like they did with all their other exclusives :-/

Doesn't everyone know, the longer it takes for a game to come out, the better it is. Duke Nukem Forever, anyone.

As long as the game is complete with the full original vision and direction intact then Im happy. Last thing I want is an incomplete or misinterpretted product. I have played enough of those in the past.

But if i had to ask team ico something i'd say why is it taking so long to release the game ? seriously game has been development since probaply 2007 is it really taking this long ? what is going on in the studio ?

No worries this won't affect the game, and Ueda leaving is still a rumor and has not been confirmed by him or sony.

Hopefully this means The Last Guardian is nearly done. I should imagine, and hope, Sony would be doing more to keep such high-position folk on the team if development was no where near done. Either way, it's looking increasingly like The Last Guardian will be Team ICO's last project. Sad times, but so be it.

This saddens me, It seems like we won't see it anytime soon + it'll have all sorts of external influences pulling the game in different directions.

@Evilbunz...it was announced in 2007, at the TGS I believe. Team ICO has been working on it since 2005, though. I understand the concern but still...its Team ICO!

When it comes to publishing for an autere like Ueda, publishers need to realize that they are only going affect development detrimentally by sticking their noses in. Hate to say it, but if something along those lines is close to what actually went down behind the scenes, then Sony is getting what they deserve. I only hope they don't start doing this with Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, etc. They shouldn't punish these teams who are incredibly different. Now with SCE London, its hilarious what they did to them- after messing up on the Getaway twice, Sony forced them to make Singstar games haha
