Lara gets episodic on the 360

Tomb Raider: Anniversary will be available to download in bite-size chunks, starting in September.

by

As revealed by Entertainment Software Rating Board listings, Lara Croft will be bringing her latest adventure--an updated remake of the very first Tomb Raider game--to Microsoft's Xbox 360 in episodic form.

The Eidos title has already been released on the PC and PlayStation 2 and will also be coming to the PlayStation Portable and the Wii. The newly confirmed 360 version will initially be available to download exclusively from the Xbox Live service in four episodes (despite the ESRB rating five installments)--the first two will be out in September, with the final two coming "shortly afterwards." However, there's one catch--gamers must own a copy of the 360 version of Tomb Raider Legend to download Anniversary.

The episodes will cost 2,400 Microsoft points (approximately £20.40) in total, and additional content, including picture and theme packs, will also be released, although no dates were given for these. A full retail version of the Xbox 360 edition will also be released before the end of the year.

For more information on the game, please see GameSpot's full review of the PS2 version of the game.

READ THIS BEFORE YOU POST A COMMENT, PLEASE TR:A is 2,400 TOTAL POINTS. $30 FOR THE ENTIRE GAME. THIS IS THE EXACT SAME PRICE ON ALL OTHER PLATFORMS. A PHYSICAL, DISC-BASED RELEASE IS COMING LATER THIS YEAR. YOU ARE NOT FORCED TO BUY LEGEND UNLESS YOU WANT TO DOWNLOAD THE GAME. For those complaining about the Legend prerequisite for DLC, clearly, you haven't played Legend. It's a great game and deserves your attention. Since Legend currently retails for $30, it's like getting two great games for the price of one full price 360 title.

Is that 2,400 Microsoft points per episode? So its basically 30$ per 4 episodes?! I'm better off buying the PS2 version for a one time fee of 30$.

mismajor you clearly don't own a 360 cuz you'd know this is a smart idea.. less space taken off our hard drives.. like mattcake said pretty much.. uses the textures from legends. Shame on you noob... :P

PC Version for me.... 360 version is just another milking operation. Shame on MS....

As a few people have already said, the downloadable version no doubt requires Legend because it uses models and textures from it - this means the download can be WAY smaller and use far less HD space on our already crowded xboxes. It also clearly states a retail version will be available later, altho expect it to cost 33-50% more imo :) This is a nice way of letting people who already bought Legend cut thru some red tape and get the game quicker than waiting for retail.

they should have just released this when they released the ps2 and pc version of this

well that sets off a serious notion of mixed feelings... :( Already owning Legend kind of makes sense for this deal, but what about people who DO want to experience Tomb Raider and don't own the game?! That means serious money is being squeezed out of this old girl, and thats kind of not fair! Simply adding achievement points behind this doesn't seem like enough to merit the price, so I'm hoping something more comes along as it nears release.

why PC & PS2 got, then xbox360 ? so why buy xbox360.

@thanatose: "...I'll just get it for my PC off of Steam and save a ton of money..." ? It's $29.99 on Steam. All of the episodes together will total 2,400 Microsoft Points, which roughly converts to ~$30. You're saving a penny via Steam.

This seems like a really random thing to do. But, yeah...okay. I'm playing it on Gametap, so there.

If a full retail version will be out at the end of the year, those who REALLY want Tomb Raider will probably be the only ones downloading it (along with those that already have Legend). Granted that's a huge generalization, but it makes some sense. :) Although it will be a total of $20-$30 cheaper this way. Not to mention Eidos will get more profits (no printing DVDs, no shipping).

If you own the game on disc, doesn't that mean you can take it back to a Gamestop and get credit?? And if you download it, you can never get any money back for it when you're done????? WTH are they thinking? That we're stupid? I'd just wait for the whole game to come out and sell it back when I was done. If you actually download this, I'm sorry, but your.... I'm not gonna' finish that statement as it may be viewed as offensive... yeah, don't download it.

Tomb Raider Legends wasn't that impressive. I'll wait and hope they drop the download cost just a little bit. This could be a trend though in downloadable games and a nifty way to try and sell more of the bigger HDs.

YEAP, Its better not to wait , I got the pc version too, and I can use my X360 controller, also controls are very good, I rather have it on disc & its cheaper than the 360 version, On amazon YOU'll GET IT FOR 28 BUCKS plus free shipping!!!

"Here's an Idea RENT legends, they will never know. That said it is an Ok game worth thirty bucks I would say." Highly doubtful that that method will work. It will probably require the Legends disc every single time you want to play, a la Crackdown and the Halo 3 beta.

glad i bought the pc version, especcially because it is preconfigured to use your 360 controller straight out the box, so its just as good.

Makes me wonder if the whole "buy Crackdown to get Halo 3 Beta" was more of a test then we realized. Maybe this is going to happen alot more often now that we proved we will put up with it. __________________________________ Anniversary uses the engine from Legends. By requiring the game disc and making the content as an episodic add on it should save a lot as far as HD space is concerned. For everyone b*tching at the 2400 pts.... that = 30$ (same price as the PS2 & PC version.

I'll pass on this one, I'll just get it for my PC off of Steam and save a ton of money.

Beards_Mahoney If you knew that many publishers want their game content to be free and Microsoft slaps the price on it then you wouldnt be saying Microsoft is not to blame but until you do then you FAIL

devilscry

not worth it. unless you already own Legend. I sold off my copy so having to get it and then this game just to play it is ridiculous. so i'm gonna stick with the PS2 version now. Xbox almost had me, but not after that. Givin me stipulations to DL a game that i can just buy for less then what you're offereing? makes no sense

chibi-acer

Well, Legend was awesome, so I'm definitely going to get Anniversary for either the 360 or PC. The only thing that bothers me is that they're going episodic with a game that's already out in full on 2 other systems. I guess this is someone's way of experimenting with selling digital content. Shrug.

Beards_Mahoney
Beards_Mahoney

For those complaining "WTF why must I buy Legend" that is because for two simple reasons. First off, they're selling Anniversary for about 30$, so they obviously want to make a large profit by making you buy both games. Secondly, Anniversary uses the same graphics engine and physics engine as Legend. so think of Anniversary as a "total modification" for your Legend game. That is in no way, shape, or form an acceptable answer as to why gamers have to already own Tomb Raider Legend. Thats like saying McDonalds ought to MAKE you by french fries because they "would go so well after that tasty Big Mac you just bought." I will say this. STOP. BLAMING. MICROSOFT. The Pricing and structure of the downloads are determined by the publishers. That means MS is no more responsible for this than they were for Activision's hurrendous pricing of the Guitar Hero tracks. Eidos deserves the big finger here, not MS. You hear that EIDOS?!?! I'M OFFICIALLY CALLING SHENANIGANS!!!! SHENANIGAAAAAAANNNSSS!!!!

I see no point to this. Why make the episodes available to those who only have Legend? That is excluding people...not nice. The game should be made available all at once to everyone, none of this Legend stuff. They're going to alienate the fans who recently got their 360's.

Wait wait wait. Ok so I have Legend, and love it. So now I can have the option to pay 2,400 points to download a remake of the first Tomb Raider? No freakin thanks. And then they state a real version of the game will be able to be baught at a store? What the heck is the point of any of this downloading? People to lazy to go out and buy there games now? Holy crap.

gill9221

Well, if you already own Legend, it's not a bad deal. I'm willing to wait for HD and widescreen support, especially after reading about the PS2 version's jaggy edges. If you don't have Legend, though, it's a total rip-off. You can't even find it at most retail stores anymore!

gatsuragi

i completley protest against this...i dont care how much they have to pay...when i found out that legend was on xbox/360 i neerly died..... the franchise is purly playstation and should stay that way...to hell with popular damand and all of that...lara to me should only be played through the eyes of a true playstation gamer......so no i do not want this to happen..down with xbox.....sorry if i have effended anyone...just purly my thoughts on the situation..its not anything biased so yer

I hope other developers don't start doing this, because this is an outrage!! How can Eidos release it for all the other consoles for 40-50 dollars and then make 360 owners pucker up 80 for it. I know it will eventually release for 60, but this could be one step in a path that no gamer wants to follow
