Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light shines on XBLA

Microsoft Store Update: Crystal Dynamics' adventure game hits download hub; demos for NHL 11, H.A.W.X. 2 now available; Games on Demand welcomes The Outfit, MotoGP 08, and Guilty Gear 2.

It's a busy week on Xbox Live, as Microsoft welcomes the final installment in its Summer of Arcade promotion, as well as two demos and a handful of Games on Demand releases.

Leading the pack this Wednesday is Crystal Dynamics' Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (1,200 MS points or $15) on Xbox Live Arcade. Guardian of Light casts players as the adventurous Lara, trekking through lush forests, dark caves, and fighting off assorted pugnacious foes.

Lara Croft drops the Tomb Raider name this week.

On the demo front, Microsoft added trials for two upcoming games this week, the first of which is EA Sports' NHL 11. The sampler gives hockey fans a glimpse and feel for what the developer is calling a new real-time physics engine. The new system is said to up the realism factor by including bigger hits, broken sticks, and faster dangles.

The other demo hitting the Microsoft download hub this week is for Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X. 2. The taster gives gamers a look at the upcoming air combat game by thrusting players into the boots of an elite super flight combat engineer.

Switching to Games on Demand updates, Microsoft added three new titles to its store this week. THQ's squad-based third-person World War II title The Outfit ($19.99) is now available to download from the virtual storefront. The game lets players enlist as one of three squadmates and employ their unique attributes in the title's destructive combat sequences.

Also arriving on the Games on Demand hub this week is MotoGP 08 ($19.99). Capcom's motorcycling multiplatform game from 2008 is now available for speed aficionados to download. The title features both single-player and multiplayer, lets players customize their bikes, and build reputation through completing races.

The last Games on Demand title arriving this week is Guilty Gear 2: Overture ($19.99). From Arc System Works, the 2008 title is a third-person action game that meshes strategy and slashing action. The title sports a multiplayer component for up to four players on Xbox Live.

This is a good game for $15. But the experience is best playing co-op.

@ Humorguy_basic I dont care about Tomb Raider games... But i tell you this is a good fun game... i wish they could have used Indiana Jones instead of Lara Croft so fanboys wouldn´t whine about "this just not being Tomb Rider" well... it's not tomb rider, thats why it isnt called tomb rider. Its a spin off (a very fun one by the way). The same way mario kart it's a mario spin off...

It looks good, but I'm sorry it's just not Tomb Raider. If Crystal Dynamics wanted to make a new game why didn't they? Instead of putting Lara Croft in a fantasy game? Why couldn't they have made Guardian Of Light without Lara Croft in it? I hate how Crystal Dynamics have changed the series so much.

Sigh, too many games are being priced at $15, I hope this doesn't become the new norm for XBLA pricing.

The new tomb raider games are getting really repetitive or just revamps of the ones that failed imo. Hopefully this one puts the fun back into raiding tombs :)

@humorguy I like classic tomb raider games and all, but they're getting a bit stale. Maybe this $15 dollar title will be enough to revitalize the series some, and give Crystal ideas and feedback to improve the classic games a bit. Legend was good, anniversary was very similar, but great classic, and underworld, while fun, was getting a bit stale. If they keep with just the pure old system, they're gonna have lots of problems, seeing as how each successive title sells worse.

I am counting down the minutes to get 'Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light'. Crystal has finally did it!! :D Hope this means good news for the next real TR game.

Another Golden PC franchise gets dumbed down for the run & gun low IQ gaming crowd. Let's not forget that there are FIVE DLC's planned for release during 2010, so you are going to be spending $60 on a $20 game just because Lara Croft is in the title. This is a generic run and gun action game with an incredibly shallow story and characters. By making one of those characters Lara Croft, Crystal Dynamics are hoping you'll spend this money and make them millions for a game that doesn't deserve it. If you buy into this as a 'Tomb raider game, more fool you and the more of you fooled, the less we are likely to see another classic Tomb Raider game and the more were likely to see these dumb run & gun games worth $20 selling for $60!

Everyone that's reviewed the new tomb raider so far have given it an 8 or higher. I'm getting this as soon as it comes out tomorrow.. I look forward to having a great time. Everyone says it's the re-invention the series needed. Sounds great! As it is, I love games with the top down view, so no complaints from me on the premise. Hope it's as good as the reviews say!

I'm just wondering if this will be as good as the previous ones. I will give it a go though.

Will it be like the debut effort and its sequel... Diverting and unique? Or will it be just another rehash cash-in with one or two alterations to the now-old conventions? Here's hoping for new... not "improved".

Looking forward to seeing how Tomb Raider has changed.
