Korean MMORPG hits pay dirt in Japan

Beta test for Granado Espada draws 100,000 users in seven hours.

by

Hanbit Ubiquitous Entertainment (HUE) appears to have a smash hit on its hands with its new massively multiplayer online role-playing game, Granado Espada. HUE, the Japanese arm of Korean publisher Hanbit Soft, acquired 100,000 users in just seven hours of beta testing last week, according to Web site MyCom PC.

The game's popularity provides additional proof of Japan's growing interest in MMORPGs played on PCs.

HUE managing director Jinho Shin had his own spin on the game's success: He described the beta test's popularity as an endorsement of the game's high production values and new perspective on MMORPG gameplay.

Hanbit Soft is one of the top five game publishers in Korea, and it has licensed Granado Espada to operators in a number of other countries, including Singapore, Vietnam, Australia, and Taiwan.

well its on beta and just like ragnarok it will take some time before reaching us/Europe but i doubt they will not get it here....this game is going to be amazing sure the graphics arent top end but come on is WoW and does anyone really care about graphics now days....gameplay matters and this has it, creating a unique form of gameplay whereby I am always a party of 3 makes it new and fun, seriously no longer will fight be 1 ended i.e fighters are best damage dealers , it will be about support of the other 2 etc. as well as the graphics how can you overlook the fact that it is set in an unique area.....no more fantasy castles of oriental looks, its 18th century Europe....something thats rarely if ever done......this is going to rock the world of MMO

Well, it is true that a lot, and I mean a lot (look at Ragnarok, Guild Wars, etc.) of good MMORPGs come from Korea, but it is a surprise that an MMORPG got a 100K beta testers in just 7 hours.

Don't play more than 3 hours or you might get shot.

QUICK FAQ: the big detail you need to know here is henchmen. You are *always* a tribe of one, with 3 character avatars at your control full time in Granado Espada. You swap between them during gameplay, so you can have a healer, fighter, slower - etc., all yours. And I think 3 people can form a (non-raid) group, so it's a group of 9 characters (3 x 3). Sort of cool. They also plan to treat the avatars like a type of loot, to minimize farm & sell, so players can swap characters between each other - auction house style. Characters will keep the name given to them and certain traits. Besides that, expect a really stylized alternate universe renaissance-era visual theme, with Korean sensibility in character art.

It looks pretty ugly for a new pc game... Final Fantasy on the PS2 looks way better than this.

Its "ok", its like a cross between Diablo 2 and an MMO. Point click and attack. ~Yes I played it.~

Umm, Guild Wars didn't start life in Korea. NCSoft is Korean, but they only funded Guild Wars. ArenaNet, the company that actually made Guild Wars, is American. Back on topic, drawing 100,000 beta testers in 7 hours is not an indication of success...yet. Those 100,000 people may just want to see what the game is about and if it's any good. The amount of people who actually end up subscribing to the game will determine whether it's successful or not.

Why is there no GameSpace for "Granando Espada"? I wanna have a look at these production values. I imagine it's more J-RPG like than most. EDIT: if it does do well, it will make the trip over here. Guild Wars started life in Korea, as have other big names. This game does look pretty sweet. http://ge.hanbiton.com/
