Konami profits up 22.4%, takeover defenses renewed

Metal Gear foundry in black despite 15.4% revenue drop; plan to ward off unwanted large-scale stock purchases renewed.

by

So far this month, Nintendo, Capcom, Namco Bandai, Activision Blizzard, Electronic Arts and Sony have all filed annual earnings reports. Konami joined the financial festivities today, announcing its profits rose 22.4 percent for the year ending March 31, 2010.

For the 12-month period, the company reported ¥13.3 billion ($143.2 million) in profits, up from ¥10.9 billion ($117.5 million) a year ago. However, annual revenues were ¥262.1 billion ($2.82 billion), a decrease of 15.4 percent from the ¥309.8 billion ($3.34 billion) it took in the year prior. Notable releases during Konami's last fiscal year include Pro Evolution Soccer 2010, Saw, Karaoke Revolution, and Silent Hill: Shattered Memories.

For its current fiscal year, Konami is predicting nearly flat growth, despite upcoming releases, such as Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Saw 2, and PES 2011. The company is anticipating a profit increase of just 1.7 percent to ¥13.5 billion ($145.5 million), with overall revenue climbing 8.7 percent to ¥285 billion ($3.07 billion).

In addition to its financial results, Konami announced today that it was renewing and slightly revising a system to deter a corporate takeover. Initially put in place in 2007, the plan calls for a mandatory review by the board of directors of any mass purchases of stock. The review will determine if the mass purchase will add or dilute value of current shareholders' holdings. If the board determines the latter to be true, it will enact "countermeasures" to deter the purchase.

Why is Castlevania not listed? I'm so excited for that game, are we going to have to wait at least another year for it?

I'm happy to hear that 1 of my fav gaming companies is actually doing good. Konami and Capcom both rock. Eventually, though, companies making games for consoles are gonna end up selling their back-catalogs via download for PCs. It's inevitible. At least Konami has MGS, Castlevania, Contra, etc... to offer when that day comes. I'd rather see Konami do THAT then get bought out!

it looks like many companies are looking ahead and realizing the fans want more new things instead of the new old things

I'd like to see Konami get back in the saddle, but flat growth predictions aren't exactly encouraging. When you're speaking to investors, you usually want to convey something optimistic. We'll see I guess, but here's hoping these guys get some traction. A new Contra game would be cool.

Your comment didn't specify it was just about multiplayer. I can understand if the game provides a challenge your not keen on yet, but that doesn't mean the game is truly Disapointing.

@HiroArka What the hell does it have to do with me not understanding Japanese? I talked about the Multiplayer. You don't have to know Japanese to turn the WLAN switch on!. The game is local, And cannot be played worldwide. This sucks for players like me, who don't have friends who play that game. And this is not the biggest problem. Most of the awesome features of this game are kept only for the Co-op!. This game was not meant to be played alone!. The Boss Battles are impossible for players who go for it solo, and not in a good way. The Bosses are just unfair, and without a team to play with, you have no chance of survivng this game whatsoever without wanting to break your PSP into two, then put it back together, and then break it again!. So yeah, I'm dissapointed.

@supertom221 If you played it .. then it must have not been in English and you couldn't have truly understood or enjoyed properly.

supertom221

Played MGS: PW..... In one word: Dissapointing. Never been so dissapointed from an MGS game in my life!. The Co-Op is local, so it sucks, and the game is nearly impossible alone. In other words, Monster Hunter-like.

@smarty 12 actually, it already has. Remember when the GameCube had that add on that will allow you to play GameBoy games on the GameCube? Well, it did actually happen.

@Alan1187 You do realise that would never happen right?

In these economic times any profit is welcomed. If Konami can still produce quality games then it will continue to do well. Is there another game in the works that will rank with MGS. If there is then Konami will continue to rank among the best developers.

Wish the PS3 would support the PSP games, even if the graphics aren't PS3 quality I'd still want to play a few of the games. But I'm glad to see the good companies up there.

gamer082009
gamer082009

I guess it's a good thing..I will say they need to churn up some of their triple (A) titles and then they'd gain more traction. And I'm sure we all want Konami to succeed, they actually make really highly quality games. God forbid Nintendo buys them or something!
