Konami down with Def Jam Rapstar, Dr. Dre, Kanye on board

Japanese publisher to distribute 4mm's hip-hop karaoke game this fall; song selection to cover old-school hits from Wu-Tang Clan, new tracks from Lil' Wayne; will use Xbox 360, PS3 cameras.

by

Last May, two of the original founders of Rockstar Games helped create the all-new publishing label 4mm Games. Today, the New York-based company announced a partnership with Konami to distribute its hip-hop karaoke title, Def Jam Rapstar. As the name suggests, the game will offer licensed hits from the eponymous rap label. It will also offer tracks from other companies, ranging the gamut from retro classics to new releases.

You want some C.R.E.A.M. with that?

Jamie King, chief creative officer and cofounder of 4mm Games, told GameSpot that Def Jam Rapstar's track list will include Wu-Tang Clan's "C.R.E.A.M.," Dr. Dre's "Nuthin' but a G Thang," Lil' Wayne's "A Milli," and Kanye West's "Gold Digger." Six more of the game's 50 songs were also announced today (see below), with the rest of the tracklist to be revealed at a later date.

Def Jam Rapstar is due out this fall for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii. It is being developed by Terminal Reality and Def Jam Interactive, with newly formed shop Autumn Games copublishing. It will use the two consoles' cameras for gameplay and will offer region-specific songs in the UK and Europe. It will also offer a Freestyle mode that will allow players to create their own tracks and upload and share videos.

Fore more on Def Jam Rapstar, check out GameSpot's hands-on preview of the game.

This game is obviously NOT targeting teens. It is going after fans of old school style hip hop. Not this T-Pain style stuff. I'm glad Enimem is off the list he sucks nowadays! Hopefully IceCube, Westside Connection, Too Short and more than 1 Dr. Dre song make this list...

@playa42018 alright sorry about that haha. ya i get wat u mean i thought u were musically ignorant

@LilTrigga95 I agree with you, but do you think the young teens are gonna buy a game with a bunch of music they haven't heard. Think about it from a business standpoint, Mainstream music is what's gonna sell the game.

Kanye in the new game, eh? Why do I think he's going to be like the old "toasty man" in Mortal Kombat 2 only he periodically pops in, brings the gameplay to a grinding halt, and then says "I don't want to take away from your little beat down here but the Rodney King beating was a much better beating. Fo' real."

I will definitely be buying this game, but if they want this game to be successful, they're going to need to put more recent, well-known hits. I'm just saying.

@x-2tha-z You gave him Inspectah Deck's whole sh*t. Good way to let that boy know something.

The market for this game will be quite small. It's not like SingStar, where most people know the words to the songs or the song is slow enough where you can read and sing the words as they appear. Most people won't know the words to these hip-hop tracks. Even with the words on-screen, most people probably still won't be able to keep up with the track. Also, I wonder if the tracks will be uncut or edited? Hmmm.

@hannify - Your comment is typical of people who don't understand hip-hop. C.R.E.A.M features one of my favourite verses. Inspectah Deck's... "It's been twenty-two long hard years of still strugglin' Survival got me buggin, but I'm alive on arrival I peep at the shape of the streets And stay awake to the ways of the world cause **** is deep A man, with a dream, with plans to make cream Which failed; I went to jail at the age of 15 A young buck, sellin' drugs and such, who never had much Trying to get a clutch at what I could not... could not... The court played me short, now I face incarceration Pacin' -- going upstate's my destination Handcuffed, in the back of a bus, forty of us Life as a shorty shouldn't be so ruff But as the world turns I learned life is hell Living in the world no different from a cell Everyday I escape from Jakes givin' chase, sellin' base Smokin' bones in the staircase Though I don't know why I chose to smoke sess I guess that's the time when I'm not depressed But I'm still depressed, and I ask what's it worth? Ready to give up so I seek the Old Earth Who explained working hard may help you maintain to learn to overcome the heartaches and pain We got stickup kids, corrupt cops, and crack rocks and stray shots, all on the block that stays hot Leave it up to me while I be living proof To kick the truth to the young black youth But shorty's running wild, smokin' sess, drinkin' beer And ain't trying to hear what I'm kickin' in his ear Neglected, but now, but yo, it gots to be accepted That what? That life is hectic" Deck's probably my favorite from the whole group. His solo albums are good too. Lyrics taken from http://www.lyricsdomain.com/23/wutang_clan/cream.html

why the hell is 50 and Jeezy up there but not Lupe, J Cole, Em, Busdriver, and well... any rapper that can actually rap... granted this is a starter list, but still... It feels a bit disgraceful that they are allowed to even share the same page.... ohh!! Konami should have Soulja Boy!!! (snicker)

Wow, so the tracklist is going to be region specific. Does that mean Europe gets no East Coast/West Coast hits unless it's a big name (Dre, Luda, Em, etc). Def Jam actually has some guys who are only locally known. Oh, and the only "Epic Fail" is for people who still type "Epic Fail". LOL

First DJ Hero now this, Eww..... I actually like a couple of the songs on the list but I realy don't want to actually rap the whole song.....No, I just want to enjoy the glory days of gangsta rap by listening to the songs I like......

This is awesome! I've been wondering if anybody was going to try to do the hip-hop/rap genre in a Rock Band/Singstar fashion. I may actually support this game with a purchase. Just like Rock Band and the like, there are going to be songs I won't care for, but it seems like there will be enough of the songs I like to have a great experience with the game. _

I'll wait for an "old school edition". The (c)rap that tries to pass itself of as authentic hip hop from the late 90s forward is largely worthless with few exceptions.

Sigh... I guess I can now abandon all hope of new Def Jam fighting game. Seriously, what other fighting franchise was okay with beating the crap out of famous people with pipes and bottles, and then hurling them into an oncoming subway train?

Considering how horrendous a flop Def Jam Icon was, I had a feeling they were gonna go down this road. Really sucks too because Vendetta and FFNY were two of the best fighting games I had ever played. That's what happens when rap artists try to "keep it real", sigh

slick rick, wu tang, biggie, pac, and snoop and dre? thats awesome man. those are some of the greatest rappers/artists EVER in the hip hop genre. as long as they dont balance out this awesomeness with today's terrible vocalizer tracks, then i'll definately be getting this game.

I think this is awesome :). If there's an audience for it, it would be nice to do every genre of music (one's with lyrics of course!). I may check this out. And folks, if you don't like it, don't buy it .

Awesome, I do a pretty good Coolio "Gangsta's Paradise" and Gang Starr's "Mass Appeal," lol, I think this would be great ! Hope we see some Public enemy and DMX on there...Now if they could come out with a definitive Black Metal karaoke with corpsepaint included, I would be in Heaven.
