Kojima, Suda-51 team up for Sdatcher radio drama

Directors of Metal Gear and No More Heroes detail long-awaited collaboration inspired by Snatcher.

Suda 51 and Hideo Kojima have been talking about collaborating for five years. The first concrete project to feature the pair of star designers has finally come to light, as Famitsu reports that Kojima today announced Sdatcher.

Kojima, no doubt pondering how to get illustrations into a radio drama.

Pronounced "Su Datcher," the project is a radio drama inspired by Kojima's 1988 adventure game Snatcher (eventually released in the US on Sega CD in 1994). The tweak on the name is a nod to No More Heroes director Suda, who will write the story. Kojima will direct the show, with Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka providing the music and Yoshio Kasatoshi working on character designs and illustrations (though it's unclear what illustrations a radio drama would require).

While Suda and Kojima have not previously teamed up on a game, Suda and Yamaoka are coming off their own critically acclaimed collaboration with Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami, Shadows of the Damned.

It's not clear when Sdatcher will premiere, or who will be used as the show's voice cast. Kojima did say it should be enjoyable to newcomers as well as those familiar with the original Snatcher. The project has been in the works for some time, originally being talked about in 2007 under the code name "Project S."

I'm not sure how this is going to work. Like, are they going to release it in episodes on Amazon MP3 or something? I'm confused.

Can you make a game out of it maybe? Videogames killed the radio star.

My god, Suda-51 and Kojima are the two most 'out there', farfetched and twistedly brilliant game creators on the market today. I'll be looking into anything that has both their names on it.

Snatcher was great. Reminds me of Bladerunner and Terminator. Hope they can come into an agreement and make a remake in HD

I like Suda, but Kojima is a terrible storyteller. With Kojima's being involved, I'm not sure I'd spend time listening to this radio production even if someone were to make a version with an English-speaking cast.

For a second I thought they had misspelled Snatcher in the title, but then I read the article. It's interesting, to say the least. I was hoping for a game, but this seems promising as well.

Yes, long time waiting... but not for a Radio Drama. Disapointed here.

@Ovirew, I read the article. I suppose you're saying the director has absolutely nothing to do with how a story is presented. That's fine.

Sdatcher, from the people who brought you Transfarring.

Yes! Yes! YES! I don't care if this is just a Japanese radio drama. Any type of revival for Snatcher is cool in my books. Hopefully this project is successful and it spawns either a remake of the original or a full-fledged new game. Either way, I'll definitely be checking this out.

I don't know about the rest of you, but when this makes it onto YouTube, I'd love to hear it. And, if it's in Japanese, it must be translated (subtitles).

lol Suda is handling the story? It should be absolute madness, par the course for him.

Well, this is.....odd? I would think that three major players in the game industry would be putting together a game project. I am hoping that this will be a precursor to an actual game. A new Snatcher series would be pretty cool, I think, especially in the hands of Suda, Kojima, and Akira. However, I am not entirely sure why this is big news on Gamespot, since the majority of the world will probably never see this drama (considering pretty much every radio drama is both in Japanese and never ends up outside the shores of Japan).

@pie369 No, they're calling the radio drama Sdatcher. It's explained in the second paragraph.

Iridescent406

@Bartz77 - A mistake on my part. Yes, it's pretty much a radio show, but that's still no reason to come off ignorant at the fact that it's just a Japanese radio show.

Shouldn't the title be "Kojima, Suda-51 team up for Snatcher radio drama" Instead of "Kojima, Suda-51 team up for Sdatcher radio drama"

Bartz77

@Iridescent406 He hasn't seen gameplay yet because there never will be gameplay. It's a radio drama, not a video game dude. Next time you try to make someone look like a fool actually read the article.

Iridescent406

@istuffedsunny - Yeah, because you've seen gameplay. Next time you try to make fun of something, have something to back it up. Also, I can see this being that next big "cult hit".

lol People getting excited over a Japanese-only voice drama for an old, irrelevant game? Okay.

How about a new Snatcher instead of a radio drama...?

It's nice to see that the game is still getting some attention. I'd like to see another game, but a radio drama may become a starting point for one.
