Kojima looking to remake MGS1 with next-gen Fox engine

[UPDATE] Metal Gear Solid creator says he'd be interested in another MGS1 remake, but error in translation means it's not actually happening right now.

by

[UPDATE] Hideo Kojima has said on Twitter that he is not actively looking for a studio to remake Metal Gear Solid in the Fox engine, but that his translator misinterpreted his comments. "Regarding the rumor from yesterday," he said, "checked the data recording of the actual interview. It was mistranslated from our side. Chris, my interpreter answered in different nuance that made this consequence. I on the other hand, answered w/ bit of lip service."

"I answered, 'You (the journalist) wanted me to do MGS2 on Fox Engine but I cannot do. I wish if only someone could make MGS1 on Fox Engine.' The journalist wasn't wrong."

"We are deeply sorry for the misinterpretation on our side," he concluded.

While Kojima isn't actively looking to remake MGS, he indicated he still has an interest in the idea. "Well, if there's some creator or team in this world who has love and passion to remake 'MGS1', I would love to ask for it," he said.

The original story follows below.

Hideo Kojima is looking to remake the original Metal Gear Solid using Kojima Productions' next-generation Fox engine, GameReactor reports.

During a roundtable interview at E3 2013 attended by GameReactor, the MGS visionary said that he's currently seeking an external studio to handle the adaptation.

The original Metal Gear Solid was released in 1998 for the PlayStation and was ported later to Windows in 2000. It is considered to be one of gaming's definitive titles. Kojima has entrusted the Metal Gear franchise to external developers in the past. Eternal Darkness and Too Human developer Silicon Knights handled the 2004 GameCube remake Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes.

Kojima Productions also drafted in Bayonetta developer Platinum Games for the spin-off title Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, which was released earlier in 2013.

Kojima Productions' Fox engine was revealed in 2011 and is designed to be a cross-platform engine designed around the next-generation: Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

The Fox engine is powering Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and is also behind Pro Evolution Soccer 2014.

Elsewhere in the interview, Kojima said the value of next-generation consoles was about far more than improved visual prowess. "For us it's not about upgraded graphics or anything like that," he said. "We're really looking forward to the fact that we can now use multiple devices to play a game. So whether it's smartphones or tablets, we can play Metal Gear Solid V on that tablet or smartphone and integrate that into what we have on the console. So people can play the game essentially 24 hours and be in the world of MGS anytime they like to."

Why MGS1? they should focus on doing a remake of the first MG and MG2: solid snake.

David Hayter as Snake's voice in the remake!!!!!

A shame. I'd love to see Shadow Moses Island in Fox Engine glory.

Still, I'd like to see remakes of the original Metal Gears more than a remake of MGS1. Solid Snake facing Big Boss was a key moment in the franchise.

Let's all pretend Kojima isn't going to have Platinum Games do this.

Kojima just want a publicity of its newly FoxEngine but to achieve that goal he will have to prove it the best.

i love this idea but i think they should have done MG 1.but i suspect hideo is trying to make MG 1& 2 direct sequels to PHANTOM PAIN than again this HIDEO only GOD knows what that man is thinking.

I won't be crying over this spilled milk. I'm just not a fan of the remake culture. The original is a masterpiece that defies time. No point wasting development time re-inventing the wheel.

On another note, I can only imagine the translator in question has disappeared into the mountains on a journey to reclaim his family's honour for failing in his duty. :-P

I love to see a remake MGS1. I played it over over again almost 10 times.

However, personally, I think Kojima doesn't want the remake version to happen so soon. He is a legend game creator and artist. Speaking on the side of the artist, he absolutely does not want to remake the thing when it is completed. I mean he pushed so much effort on making it in every details. When it is done, it is done!!! The real artist doesn't care about the money or any request from the public. He'll do it when he has a passion to do it.

I can just picture this in my head and it's amazing =)

Please don't remake it. MGS4 incorporated lots of elements and characters from MGS1, which was a fitting tribute.

A remake will never have the same feel. The memory card, controller port switching and disc change will not translate well onto the modern consoles. Just leave the past alone.

As much as I love metal gear solid, what about a remake of Policenauts or Snatcher or Metal gear 1 & 2  or a new Ip

Kojima should do it and fuse it together with a remake of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 : Solid Snake. One giant game showing Snake's history during those 3 games. I know Kojima wants to focus on new projects, but this would actually feel like a new one, wouldn't it? He'd be fusing 3 games into one and remaking really old MSX stuff. That's new if you ask me. And you'd have to cast new voice actors for the MSX ones and David would come back to voice Snake. And Kojima would see his work revitalized. See? Everything would work out well for everyone. We need to annoy Kojima to the point that he breaks and says he'll do it people. Come on let's work together.

There already is a Metal Gear Solid remake and it's perfect.  How about a Metal Gear remake? We still have yet to play Metal gear or metal gear 2: Solid Snake with David Hayter as Solid Snake.

I still think the first was the best. I'd definitely check out an updated version.

What? a second remake of MGS1? How many of those do we need?

Why? To prove that consumers are mugs and buy remakes because of super graphics, oh dear.

@JusXice  Yeah, I'd love to see MGS1 remade to play more like MGS4 but also play like the original version for those who want to keep it that way....

I'd also love a HD port of Policenauts and Snatcher.....maybe for PC? that seems to be the best platform, they were point and click games like Maniac Mansion if I remember.....

Dredcrumb9

@Kandykane30188 I agree. MGS1 twin snakes is goo enough as a remake. We need a remake of Metal gear 1 and 2 with David Hayter voicing Solid Snake.

Only if it changes the core experience.

They'd never do that to MGS.... not again anyway.

@jas_skywalker @DarkNeoBahamut Nothing about being suckers. The first remake only came out on Gamecube so there was definitely a number of people that missed out on it that didn't have Gamecubes. Besides, whats wrong with people a remake of an old, but amazing game with better graphics and updated gameplay?
